ABSTRACT

Evaluating the diagram of acoustic rhinometry in normal Iranian population can be very helpful in identifying the function of nasal air flow. The aim of the present study was to examine the diagram of acoustic rhinometry in normal Iranian population with no breathing problem. This was a cross-sectional study in which 166 persons free of any breathing complaint underwent acoustic rhinometry test [GM acoustic rhinometry apparatus equipped with an ultrasound System] at Rasool-e-Akram hospital in Tehran. Later, the diagram of the minimum nasal cross section surface and volume was recorded and the data were further analyzed using t-test. While the minimum cross sectional surface in acoustic rhinometry test of 66.8% of individuals was 0.5597 cm[3] at an average distance of 1840/4 cm from the anterior concha it was 0.6166 cm[3] in 33.2% of individuals at a distance of 2.3355 from the anterior nostril. No significant correlation was found between the gender and both the volume and the minimum cross sectional surface although the nostril distance from the inferior concha was significantly lower in women compared to men [P<0.05]. Also, no significant relationship between the height and age of study population and the volume and nasal cross section diameter was established. Regarding the differences found between the results of acoustic rhinometry in various races, it could be claimed that the findings of the present study obtained from Iranian population might be a suitable measure in diagnosis of nasal airway diseases leading to selection of the most appropriate method of treatment [medical or surgical] and also the possibility of comparing the pre-and post-operation results

ABSTRACT

To report a case of ciliary body medulloepithelioma presenting as granulomatous uveitis.A 3-year-old girl presented with chronic granulomatous anterior uveitis in the right eye following unilateral cataract extraction and IOL implantation which was unresponsive to topical steroids and intra-vitreal injection of vancomycin and triamcinolone acetonide. One month later, white masses appeared over the iris surface. Histopathologic examination of the iris biopsy disclosed ciliary body medulloepithelioma. The patient was referred for plaque therapy due to the aggressive behavior of the tumor and finally, the eye was enucleated due to getting blind and painful and high suspicious of malignant behavior of the tumor. Medulloepithelioma is a rare congenital ciliary body tumor that presents with decreased vision, pain, leukocoria, and observation of a mass in the region of the ciliary body, anterior chamber and iris. Secondary glaucoma, cataract, uveitis, rubeosis iridis, retinal detachment, and ectopia lentis may develop later. The tumor may be locally aggressive and rarely metastasize. If extraocular extension does not occur, iridocyclectomy with tumor excision [in small tumors] and enucleation [in large tumors] appears to be the treatment of choice

ABSTRACT

To determine the effect of trabeculectomy [Tx] on cataract formation or progression in glaucoma patients. This controlled ciinical trial was performed on 82 eyes of 41 consecutive patients older than 50 years with glaucoma. Trabeculectomy was indicated only in one of their eyes and IOP in the other eye was controlled with medication. The operated eyes were considered as treatment and the fellow eyes were considered as control. The effect of Tx on lens opacity was evaluated with 2 criteria: decreased visual acuity [VA] and cataract formation or progression based on the LOCS III score on slit lamp photography. Overall, 53.7% of patients were male and 46.3% were female. Mean age was 62.5 +/- 9.3 years. Cataract progression in the treatment group was statistically significant when compared with their preoperative condition according to VA, and LOCS III photography [P<0.05] and scores [P=0.01]. Cataract progression in the treatment group was statistically significant compared the fellow eye according to LOCS III scores [P<0.05], but was not significant according to LOCS III photography [P=0.07]. Trabeculetctomy can induce cataract progression based on visual loss and LOCS III photography. Mean VA seems to be decreased, however not all lens opacities necessarily cause visual loss

ABSTRACT

We aimed to determine the rate of hospital discharge, average length of stay and bed occupancy rate in different hospital wards around the country. The survey consisted of health care service activities from 452 university-related hospitals in the country with a total of 59 348 beds. Because of missing data, the use of 56 315 of these beds was analysed. The countrywide discharge rate was 68.32 patients/1000 population per year with an average length of stay of 3.60 days and a bed occupancy rate of 57.44%. The data could be used to design a framework for prediction of inpatient health care facilities needed in the future
