ABSTRACT

Background@#The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in the incidence rate, length of hospital stay (LOS), in-hospital mortality rate, and surgical method of hip fractures during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in South Korea where lockdown restrictions were not implemented. @*Methods@#We calculated the expected values of the incidence of hip fractures, in-hospital mortality and LOS of hip fracture patients in 2020 (COVID period) based hip fracture database of the Korean National Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) during a 9-year period from 2011 to 2019 (pre-COVID period). A generalized estimating equation model with Poisson distribution and logarithmic link function was used to estimate adjusted annual percent change (PC) of incidence rate and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Then, we compared the annual incidence, in-hospital mortality rate and LOS in 2020 with the expected values. @*Results@#The overall incidence rate of hip fracture in 2020 was not significantly different from the expected value (PC, −5%; 95% CI, −13 to 4; P = 0.280). In women, the incidence rate of hip fracture in age groups over 70 years was smaller than the predicted value (P < 0.001). The in-hospital mortality rate was not significantly different from the expected value (PC, 5%; 95% CI, −8 to 19; P = 0.461). The mean LOS was larger than the expected value by 2% (PC, 2%; 95% CI, 1 to 3; P < 0.001). In intertrochanteric fracture, the proportion of internal fixation was smaller than the predicted value by 2% (PC, −2%; 95% CI, −3 to −1; P < 0.001), and that of hemiarthroplasty was larger than the predicted value by 8% (PC, 8%; 95% CI, 4 to 14; P < 0.001). @*Conclusions@#In 2020, the incidence rate of hip fracture did not significantly decrease, and inhospital mortality rate did not significantly increase compared to the expected rates, which were projected based on the HIRA hip fracture data from 2011 to 2019. Only LOS increased slightly.

Background@#The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence rate of suicide deaths in elderly patients with pelvic fractures using a nationwide database and to analyze change in the risk of suicide death overtime after pelvic fractures compared to controls. @*Methods@#We used the National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort (NHIS-Senior) of South Korea. Cases and controls were matched for sex, age, history of hospital admission within 1 year, and presence of depression on the date of suicide death. Controls were collected by random selection at a 1 : 5 ratio from patients at risk of becoming cases when suicide cases were collected. Incident pelvic fractures were identified from the NHIS-Senior as follows: first admission during the observational period (2002–2015) to an acute care hospital with a diagnostic code of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision S321, S322, S323, S324, S325, or S328 and age 65–99 years. Conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between pelvic fractures and the risk of suicide death. @*Results@#A total of 2,863 suicide cases and 14,315 controls were identified. Suicide case patients had been more frequently exposed to steroids (odds ratio [OR], 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21–1.45), benzodiazepines (OR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.61–1.93), and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.07–1.29). Pelvic fractures within 1 year from the date of suicide death were statistically significantly associated with increased risk of suicide (adjusted OR [AOR], 2.65; 95% CI, 1.29–5.45; p = 0.008) compared to controls. The risk of suicide death declined as the incidence date of pelvic fracture was more remote from the date of suicide death: AORs of 2.59 (95% CI, 1.33–5.04; p = 0.005) within 2 years and 2.13 (95% CI, 1.15–3.95; p = 0.017) within 3 years. However, there was no statistical significance in the increased risk of suicide death for pelvic fractures that had occurred ≥ 4 years ago (p > 0.05). @*Conclusions@#Pelvic fractures in the elderly population increased the risk of suicide death within 3 years, suggesting the need for psychiatric support among elderly patients with pelvic fractures.

Controls were randomly selected at a 1:5 ratio from the set of individuals who were at risk of becoming a case at the time when suicide cases were selected. Conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between each type of osteoporotic fracture and the risk of suicide death. @*Results@#Three thousand seventy suicide cases and 15,350 controls were identified. Patients with hip fracture showed an increased risk of suicide death within 1 year of fracture (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.57–4.46; P < 0.001) compared to controls. However, the increased risk of suicide death in patients with hip fracture lasted up to 2 years (aOR = 1.59; 95% CI, 1.04–2.41; P = 0.031). Spine fracture increased the risk of suicide deaths for all observation periods. There was no evidence that humerus fracture increased the risk of suicide death during the observational period. Radius fracture increased only the risk of suicide death within 2 years of fracture (aOR = 1.43; 95% CI, 0.74–2.77; P = 0.282). @*Conclusion@#There were noticeable differences in both degree and duration of increased suicide risks depending on the type of osteoporotic fracture. Mental stress and suicide risk in elderly patients after osteoporotic fracture should be assessed differently depending on the types of fracture.

ABSTRACT

Methods@#Patients who completed a questionnaire on back-pain between October 2016 and October 2017 were enrolled in this study. Appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI), cross-sectional area (CSA) index, fatty infiltration (FI) rate of the paraspinal muscles, and lumbar extensor strength index (LESI) were measured and compared between no back-pain and back-pain group. Correlations between LESI and ASMI, CSA index, and FI rate were analyzed. The back-pain group was further divided according to ASMI into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia subgroups and by our newly developed back muscle degeneration risk index based on correlation coefficients between LESI and CSA index, FI rate. Differences in ASMI, CSA index, FI rate, LESI, and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score between subgroups were analyzed. @*Results@#The ASMI, CSA index, FI rate, and LESI differed significantly between back-pain and pain-free groups. The LESI demonstrated the strongest correlation with FI rate. There were no significant differences in VAS score and back muscle degeneration index in the back-pain group when divided according to the presence of sarcopenia. However, there was a significant difference in VAS score between back-pain patients when classified according to high and low back muscle degeneration risk index. @*Conclusions@#We suggest that the degree of back pain is more strongly associated with back muscle degeneration than with sarcopenia. This back muscle degeneration risk index, reflecting both back muscle morphology and function, could be a useful parameter for evaluation of back pain and muscle degeneration.

ABSTRACT

Background@#The purpose of this study was to analyze the all-cause mortality rate over time after elderly hip fracture in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with dialysis, using a Korean nationwide claims database. @*Methods@#This retrospective nationwide study identified subjects from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort (NHIS-Senior). The NHIS-Senior (total of 588,147 participants) was constructed by 10% random sampling and was designed to represent the elderly living in Korea. Subjects were patients aged 65–99 years who underwent surgical treatment for femoral neck fractures or intertrochanteric fractures. A generalized estimating equation model with Poisson distribution and logarithmic link function was used to estimate adjusted risk ratios (aRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to measure associations between renal dialysis and cumulative mortality in various time frames. @*Results@#The total number of patients included in this study was 16,818. These patients were divided into two groups: 116 (0.69%) in the dialysis group and 16,702 (99.31%) in the no-dialysis group. The mean length of hospital stay was 43.87 ± 48.45 days in the dialysis group and 36.29 ± 37.49 days in the no-dialysis group (P = 0.095). The effect of renal dialysis on all-cause mortality was 2.29-fold (aRR; 95% CI, 1.29–4.06; P = 0.005) within 30 days and 1.72-fold (aRR; 95% CI, 1.34–2.21; P < 0.001) within 1-year after hip fracture compared to the no-dialysis group. And, the effect of renal dialysis of in-hospital mortality was 2.72-fold (aRR; 95% CI, 1.71–4.33; P < 0.001) compared to the no-dialysis group. @*Conclusion@#Elderly patients who underwent dialysis have very high mortality rates after hip fracture. Therefore, it is considered that postoperative care through multidisciplinary management and understanding of pathophysiology for the ESRD patients is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Giant cell tumor is a benign but locally aggressive tumor with common recurrence. Most cases occur around the knee joint. Giant cell tumor of the foot is rare and very few cases involving the first metatarsal have been reported. Its characteristics and treatment in adult patients remain unclear. This paper reports a case of recurrent giant cell tumor at the first metatarsal that was excised surgically and subsequently reconstructed with non-vascularized fibula graft.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare cemented and cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with unstable intertrochanteric fractures via meta-analysis and systematic review of relevant studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis were performed on 31 available clinical studies; 19 of these studies used cemented stems, 12 used cementless stems, one used both types of stems, and two studies involved a comparative analysis of both stem types. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in rates of leg length discrepancy (LLD) greater than 1 cm between the cemented (event rate, 0.089) and cementless groups (event rate, 0.015 and 0.047; P=0.03). CONCLUSION: Cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty and cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty performed on elderly patients with unstable intertrochanteric fracture revealed similar mortality and complication rates; however, the rate of LLD greater than 1 cm was significantly higher in the cemented group compared with the cementless group.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We evaluated the results of allograft reconstruction following wide resection of malignant bone tumors in long bone, retrospectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients were included. The mean age was 44 years old. Male was 4 cases, and female was 3 cases. Mean follow-up period was 38 months. The mean Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score at final follow-up was evaluated. Postoperative complications were evaluated via periodic radiologic follow-up. Oncologic results were analyzed at final follow-up. RESULTS: The primary malignancies occurred at femur in 5 cases, humerus in 1 case and tibia in 1 case. Pathologic diagnoses were osteosarcoma in 4 cases, multiple myeloma in 2 cases and adamantinoma in 1 case. Mean length of allograft was 165 mm. Fixations of allograft were intramedullary nailing with additional plate in 4 cases, intramedullary nailing in 2 cases, and screw fixation in 1 case. Mean time to union was 14.5 weeks. Mean MSTS score at final follow-up was 20 (67%). Postoperative complications were nonunion in 3 cases, implant failure in 1 case, and infection in 1 case. Oncologic outcomes were continuous disease free in 5 cases and alive with disease in 2 cases at final follow-up. Autologous bone graft and hemi-cortical onlay graft were performed in 2 cases of nonunion. CONCLUSION: Allograft reconstruction following wide resection of malignant bone tumors in long bone was effective surgical option. However, the possibility of nonunion between host bone and allograft should be considered.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We analyzed the surgical result of schwannoma occurring in the major peripheral nerves of the extremity and factors that influence these surgical results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients, who were followed for more than 1 year, were included. The mean age was 51 years. There were 23 male cases and 28 female cases. There were 27 cases of schwannoma in the upper extremity and 24 cases in the lower extremity. The involved nerves were classified. The maximal diameter of excised tumors was measured. Clinical and neurological symptoms were analyzed at preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up. Risk factors of neurological complications were also analyzed. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 20 months. The average maximal diameter of tumors was 2.9 cm. The most affected nerve in the upper extremity was the ulnar nerve in 10 cases, and tibial nerve in the lower extremity in 10 cases. The most prevalent preoperative symptom was Tinel in 38 cases. Clinical symptoms were improved in more than 90% of patients following the surgery. There were 13 cases with preoperative sensory deficits. Symptom improvement after surgery was observed in 9 cases; and symptoms persisted in 4 cases following surgery. At the final follow-up, sensory deficits disappeared in 2 cases and persisted in 2 cases. There were 2 cases of preoperative motor deficits. There was improvement in 1 case following the surgery and persisted in 1 case until the final follow-up. There was a statistical significance between maximal diameter of schwannoma and postoperative neurological deficits (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Schwannoma at the major peripheral nerves of the extremity can be excised with acceptable risk for neurological deficits. Meticulous dissection is required to avoid injuries of the involved nerves.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the screw-home movement at the tibiofemoral joint during normal gait by utilizing the 3-dimensional motion capture technique. METHODS: Fifteen young males and fifteen young females (total 60 knee joints) who had no history of musculoskeletal disease or a particular gait problem were included in this study. Two more markers were attached to the subject in addition to the Helen-Hayes marker set. Thus, two virtual planes, femoral coronal plane (P(f)) and tibial coronal plane (P(t)), were created by Skeletal Builder software. This study measured the 3-dimensional knee joint movement in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes of these two virtual planes (P(f) and P(t)) during normal gait. RESULTS: With respect to kinematics and kinetics, both males and females showed normal adult gait patterns, and the mean difference in the temporal gait parameters was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In the transverse plane, the screw-home movement occurred as expected during the pre-swing phase and the late-swing phase at an angle of about 17degrees. However, the tibia rotated externally with respect to the femur, rather than internally, while the knee joint started to flex during the loading response (paradoxical screw-home movement), and the angle was 6degrees. CONCLUSIONS: Paradoxical screw-home movement may be an important mechanism that provides stability to the knee joint during the remaining stance phase. Obtaining the kinematic values of the knee joint during gait can be useful in diagnosing and treating the pathological knee joints.

The mean age was 65.7 years old. The patients comprised 8 males and 11 females. Primary tumors, types of pathological fractures, surgical procedures, and postoperative complications were recorded. Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) functional score was used for functional evaluation. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to determine survival rate. RESULTS: The primary malignancies were 6 cases of breast cancer, 3 cases of lung cancer, 3 cases of renal cell carcinoma, 2 cases of cholangiocarcinoma, 2 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, 1 case of esophageal cancer, 1 case of colon cancer, and 1 case of ovarian cancer. Pathological fractures included 8 cases of pertrochanteric fractures and 11 cases of subtrochanteric fractures. Intramedullary nailing was performed in 10 cases, and joint replacement surgery was performed in 9 cases. Postoperative complications included local recurrence in 1 case, infection in 1 case, and nail breakage in 1 case. The mean postoperative MSTS score was 21. The mean survival period was 10.6 months. Patient survival rates were 42.1% after 6 months, 26.3% after 12 months, and 10.5% after 24 months. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment of pathological fractures at the proximal femur provided early ambulation, and excellent pain relief. The surgery was well tolerated emotionally. Surgery is necessary for improving the quality of life in such patients; however, more cases of pathological fractures in these regions should be subjected to detailed analysis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study examines the clinical and radiologic results of ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasties with regard to wear, osteolysis, and fracture of the ceramic after a minimum follow-up of six years. METHODS: We evaluated the results of a consecutive series of 148 primary ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasties that had been performed between May 2001 and October 2005 in 142 patients. The mean age was 57.2 years (range, 23 to 81 years). The mean follow-up period was 7.8 years (range, 6.1 to 10.1 years). Preoperative diagnosis was avascular necrosis in 77 hips (52%), degenerative arthritis in 36 hips (24.3%), femur neck fracture in 18 hips (12.2%), rheumatoid arthritis in 15 hips (10.1%), and septic hip sequelae in 2 hips (1.4%). Clinical results were evaluated with the Harris hip score, and the presence of postoperative groin or thigh pain. Radiologic analysis was done with special attention in terms of wear, periprosthetic osteolysis, and ceramic failures. RESULTS: The mean Harris hip score improved from 58.3 (range, 10 to 73) to 92.5 (range, 79 to 100) on the latest follow-up evaluation. At final follow-up, groin pain was found in 4 hips (2.7%), and thigh pain was found in 6 hips (4.1%). Radiologically, all femoral stems demonstrated stable fixations without loosening. Radiolucent lines were observed around the stem in 25 hips (16.9%), and around the cup in 4 hips (2.7%). Endosteal new bone formation was observed around the stem in 95 hips (64.2%) and around the cup in 88 hips (59.5%). No osteolysis was observed around the stem and cup. There were 2 hips (1.4%) of inclination changes of acetabular cup, 2 hips (1.4%) of hip dislocation, 1 hip (0.7%) of ceramic head fracture, and 1 hip (0.7%) of squeaking. The Kaplan-Meier survival rate of the prostheses was 98.1% at postoperative 7.8 years. CONCLUSIONS: The ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty produced excellent clinical results and implant survival rates with no detectable osteolysis on a minimum six-year follow-up study. The ceramic-on-ceramic couplings could be a reasonable option of primary total hip arthroplasty for variable indications.

PURPOSE: To analyze the effectiveness of anterior pelvic plating and subsequent percutaneous sacroiliac joint screw fixation in patients with unstable pelvic ring injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients were included with twenty-one males and eleven females. The mean age was 41 years (range, 19-76). The mean follow-up period was 51 months (range, 36-73). According to AO-OTA classification, there were 11 cases of B2 injuries, 8 cases of B3 injuries, 9 cases of C1 injuries, 2 cases of C2 injuries and 2 cases of C3 injuries. In the posterior lesions, there were 20 cases of sacral fractures and 12 cases of sacroiliac joint disruptions or dislocations. Anterior pelvic plating and subsequent percutaneous sacroiliac joint fixation were performed. RESULTS: The clinical results were 16 cases of excellent, 10 cases of good, 4 cases of moderate and 2 cases of poor functional results. The 2 cases out of 7 moderate reductions had poor functional results with residual neurologic symptoms. The radiological results were 16 cases of anatomic, 9 cases of nearly anatomic and 7 cases of moderate reduction. All patients were healed except 3 cases of nonunion at the pubic ramus. The complications encountered were 3 cases of screw loosening, 2 cases of anterior plate breakage and 1 case of postoperative infection. CONCLUSION: In patients with unstable pelvic ring injuries, anterior pelvic plating and subsequent percutaneous sacroiliac joint screw fixation may be a useful surgical option. The radiological results and residual neurologic symptoms had effects on its functional results.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the clinical and radiologic results of patients with spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee treated by minimally invasive medial unicompartmental arthroplasty using Oxford Uni. METHODS: We reviewed 22 knees in 21 patients which were treated for spontaneous osteonecrosis between 2002 and 2006. Patients included one male and 20 females. The mean age was 70.8 years (range, 53 to 82 years). The mean follow-up period was 70.3 months (range, 48 to 93 months). The clinical results were evaluated using the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) knee score and the range of motion of the knee preoperatively and at the final follow-up. Preoperative plain radiographs and magnetic resonance images were analyzed to determine the size and stage of osteonecrotic lesions. RESULTS: The mean HSS knee score was 64.3 (range, 54 to 75) preoperatively and 92.0 (range, 71 to 100) at the final follow-up. The mean preoperative flexion contracture was 8.9degrees (range, 0 to 15degrees) and 0.2degrees (range, 0 to 5degrees) at the final follow-up. The mean further flexion increased from 138.6degrees (range, 100 to 145degrees) preoperatively to 145.6degrees (range, 140 to 150degrees) at the final follow-up. Active full flexion was possible within 2 months of the operation. The squatting position was possible in 16 patients (84.2%) out of 19, except one case of bronchiectasis and one case of spine fracture. The cross-leg posture was possible in 19 patients (90.5%) out of 21. The mean tibiofemoral angle was improved from varus 0.98degrees to valgus 3.22degrees. Meniscal bearing dislocation occurred in 2 cases and femoral component loosening occurred in 1 case. CONCLUSIONS: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty using Oxford Uni could be an alternative treatment option in spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study examined the clinical and radiologic mid-term results of patients treated by Oxford minimally invasive unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-eight knees of unicompartmental knee arthroplasties with Oxford Uni(R) in 166 patients (16 males and 150 females), which were performed between 2002 and 2005, were reviewed. The mean age was 65.3 years (range, 44 to 82 years) and the mean follow-up period was 79.8 months (range, 56 to 103 months). The preoperative diagnosis was osteoarthritis in 166 patients, osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyle in 20 and chondrocalcinosis in 2. RESULTS: The mean Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) knee score was 67.5 (range, 52 to 75) preoperatively and 89.9 (range, 85 to 100) at the final follow-up. The mean preoperative flexion contracture was 6.5degrees (range, 0 to 15degrees) and 0.8degrees (range, 0 to 5degrees) at the final follow-up. The mean full flexion increased from 135degrees (range, 90 to 150degrees) preoperatively to 150degrees (range, 140 to 165degrees) at the final follow-up. Active full flexion was possible within 2 postoperative months. The squatting and cross-leg postures were possible in 133 patients (80.1%) and 152 patients (91.6%) at the final follow-up. The mean tibiofemoral angle was improved from varus 1.5degrees to valgus 4.8degrees. Complications were encountered in 18 cases (9.5%). A bearing dislocation occurred in 10 cases (5.3%), tibial component loosening in 4 cases (2.1%), femoral loosening in 3 cases (1.6%) and lateral translation in 1 case (0.5%). The mean time for a bearing dislocation was 22.6 months (range, 3 to 70 months) postoperatively. Seven cases returned to the predislocation level of activity with the insertion of a thicker bearing and 3 cases converted to total knee arthroplasty. CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive unicompartmental knee arthroplasty with Oxford Uni(R) provided rapid recovery, good pain relief and excellent function suitable for the Korean lifestyle. In contrast, the high complication rates of Oxford Uni(R) encountered in the mid-term results suggested less reliability than total knee arthroplasty.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiologic results between compressive hip screw and compressive hip screw with additional trochanteric stabilizing plate in patients with femoral unstable intertrochanteric fractures in patients with more 65 years old. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2006 to May 2009, 121 cases were included. Group I (compressive hip screw only) was 54 cases and group II (compressive hip screw with trochanteric stabilizing plate) was 67 cases. We checked the lag screw sliding, lateral translation of greater trochanter, changes of neck-shaft angle and complications through periodic follow up of radiographs. RESULTS: Mean lag screw sliding was 7.6 mm in group I and 3.9 mm in group II (p=0.001). Mean lateral translation of greater trochanter was 3.86 mm in group I and 0.59 mm in group II (p=0.01). Mean changes of neck-shaft angle was nearly the same, 3.57degrees in group I and 3.66degrees in group II. Complications were 15 cases in group I and 10 cases in group II. CONCLUSION: Compressive hip screw with additional trochanteric stabilizing plate was effective surgical option in patients with femoral unstable intertrochanteric fractures in patients with more than 65 years old. It decreased lag screw sliding, lateral translation of greater trochanter and complication rates.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To analyze the surgical results of AO type C distal femoral fractures using locking compression plate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2006 to June 2008, 14 patients 15 cases were included. Injury mechanisms, combined injuries, radiologic and clinical results and postoperative complications were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age was 59.6 (30~77) years. The mean follow up period was 25 (12~40) months. AO types were 3 of C1, 5 of C2 and 7 of C3. Injury mechanisms were 9 of traffic accident, 5 of slip down and 1 of fall from a height. Four cases were combined with other extremity injuries or fractures. The mean radiologic union was obtained at postoperative 15 (13~20) weeks. The mean Neer's functional score was 74.2 (58~97); 3 of excellent, 5 of satisfactory and 7 of unsatisfactory. Postoperative complications were 2 of infection and 1 of nonunion. There were no mechanical failures or fixation loss with locking compression plate at the final follow up. CONCLUSION: Internal fixation using locking compression plate for AO type C distal femoral fractures provided excellent fixations. At the final follow up, the clinical results were variable. The affecting factors on the final results seemed to be joint congruencies after anatomical reduction and active rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Calcification of intervertebral discs of the cervical spine in a child is an uncommon disorder, and is often associated with clinical symptoms. The etiology is still unknown, but the natural history has been reported as having a self-limiting course with an excellent prognosis. Here we report two cases of symptomatic cervical disc calcification in a child and provide a literature review.
