ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To document the benefits of antibiotic therapy in reducing post-operative complications after removal of asymptomatic mandibular impacted third molar teeth

METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department Sandiman [provincial] civil hospital Quetta from April 2013 to September 2013. It involved 100 patients with asymptomatic impacted mandibular 3[rd] molars which were divided randomly in to two groups. Group A received two gram Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid orally in divided dose for 5 days. Group B no such therapy added as control. Post-operative complications like Pain, infection, swelling, limited mouth opening and alveolar osteitis was evaluated by Chi square test

RESULTS: The results of current study suggest that vertical impaction is common type of impaction, with no gender variation in prevalence of impaction noted. Post-operative complications in both groups did not show statistically significant difference

CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that antibiotic didn't have a significant role in reducing postoperative complications after removal of asymptomatic impacted 3rd molar

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine Patient's presentation with mandibular fractures at Liaquat Medical University Hospital, Hyderabad

METHODS: This descriptive study was carried out in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro. Sample size of [n=88] with inclusion Criteria: Patients from 10-70 years of age with either gender group, Patient with clinical signs and symptoms / radiological evidence of Mandibular fracture, exclusion Criteria was medically compromised patients, Previously maltreated cases, Patients with associated other facial skeletal fractures for the year 2010-2011

RESULTS: A total of 122 mandibular fractures were recorded with male: female ratio 7:3. The road traffic accident [RTA] was the leading [42%] cause, while assault represented 21% followed by fall [15%], FAI [09%], Sports [07%] and other causes [06%].Regarding the site distribution of mandibular fractures, [15%] occurred in the condyle,[ 23%] in the angle, and [21%] in the body, [16%] parasymphsis, [15%] symphysis, [1%] ramus and [9%] dento-alveolar. Different treatment modalities were used for the proper reduction and fixation of the fracture sites. Majority of patients treated open reduction with miniplates fixation

CONCLUSION: The commonest cause of Mandibular fractures in our setup was road traffic accident, and the results of this study may be helpful for the government and public to improve road traffic sense in road users, action taken or awareness of seat belt and helmet while driving and legislation in our population

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are to analyze the pattern; symptoms and pathology associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth

MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive case series study was conducted at department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad

The duration of study was from 1[st] Nov 2011 to 31[st] July 2012.Patients complaining of impacted teeth along with two diagnostic x rays, age, gender, type of impaction and associated pathology were recorded

RESULTS: Total of 290 patients were included in this study. Out of these females were predominantly affected, mean age was found to be 24.41 years. Vertical impaction was the most common type of mandibular impaction [37.4%] and pain, caries was the common pathological symptom associated with impacted teeth

CONCLUSION: Our study showed most common age group involved was group 1 sample sizes

Vertical and Mesioangular were most common impaction seen in this study group with common symptoms pain and caries

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the early and late outcome of two treatment options by open reduction and internal fixation versus closed reduction and Maxillomandibular fixation [MMF] in treatment of gunshot injuries of Mandible

Study Design: Prospective descriptive study.

Place and Duration: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery King Edward Medical University/ Mayo hospital Lahore from November 2008 to November 2009

Methodology:Sixty patients of gunshot injury were randomly allocated in two groups. In group A, 30 patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation and in group B, 30 patients were treated by closed reduction and Maxillomandibular fixation. Postoperative complications were evaluated fortnightly and the outcome between two group were assessed Postoperatively infection, malocclusion, nonunion/ malunion of fracture fragments, facial asymmetry, exposed plate and sequestration of devitalized bone were checked. Patients were discharged as the treatment completed and recalled for post operative follow up

Results: Patients treated by open reduction were having fewer complications as compared to closed reduction i.e. 36.6%, and 50%. P-value [P>0.05] is significant in nonunion, mal union and facial asymmetry

Conclusion: Based on this study open reduction and internal fixation is the best available method for the treatment of gunshot injuries to the mandibular fractures after gunshot injuries
