ABSTRACT

Scanning Electron Microscopic [SEM] observations on the laryngeal surface morphology of the elderly with high incidence of laryngeal cancer [LC] show that it differs from surface morphology of fetus or infant. With age parts of laryngeal macosa undergo squamous metaplasia. This is the first step towards squamous cell cancerization and pathologically accounts for 99 per cent of laryngeal cancer being squamous cell carcinoma, regardless of site of its origin being either squamous epithelium or pseudosrtatified ciliated columnar epithelium
