ABSTRACT

The original Hearing Impaired Profile System [HIPS] first presented by the authors at the Alexander Graham Bell Association convention in 1980 has been revised to incorporate the integration of technological advances in amplification and other assistive listening devices for hearing impaired children This program will provide a short course I] in understanding the divisions and sub-categories comprising the HIPS 2] Practice in assigning the categories using examples of various cases, 3] practice in interpreting HIPS results for developing goals for treatment, 4] practice in using the HIPS to measure and document progress and 5] guidelines on how to modify the HIPS for particular settings for example a hospital and a school Presently there are four major divisions of the HIPS: Hearing, based on the audiogram and use of residual hearing; Language, based on semantic, syntactic and pragmatic skills; Speech, based on articulation, voice quality and rhythm, and Speech Reading, based on formal or informal lipreading tests Each of the four divisions is composed of four sub-categories based on factors that are appropriate to each category
