ABSTRACT

Background: World has become more awards centric probably because of the desire to recognize achievement is an integral part of being human. Awards and trophies are big business in 21st century and they are given to people of all ages by all kind of organizations. Physiotherapy profession has a long history of awards all over the globe but the current status of physiotherapy awards in India is hardly studied, documented or published in recent times and hence to get an insight of the same this survey research was done by inviting physiotherapy professionals with varying work experience, professional qualifications and achievements across the country. Methods: A qualitative research approach was used to conduct an online survey of physiotherapists in India. A brief questionnaire with basic information and strategic questions about awards and perception of physiotherapists were used for this purpose. Results: Informants reported that there hardly any award given by government to recognize the contribution of physiotherapists to the society. Most of they believed that it’s because of lack of political will and absence of central regulatory authority or council for physiotherapy profession in India. Most of them were happy about the award given by nongovernmental organizations but were not satisfied with its credibility, transparency in the process and selection of winners and felt mostly it’s a biased practice. Conclusions: There is need for some sort of awards and recognition of physiotherapists’ contribution to health care and the society by government and the process of selection for some nongovernmental awards need to be more transparent and unbiased.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cervical spondylosis is a general term that refers to the degenerative changes that develop either spontaneously with age, or secondarily as the result of trauma or other pathological condition. The symptoms of cervical spondylosis include pain which might be radiating or localized in the neck, limitation of neck movements, postural abnormalities. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate effectiveness of Gong’s Mobilization in the relief of pain, improvement in range of motion and functions in individuals with cervical spondylosis. Methods: Thirty subjects (19 male and 11 female) randomly allocated in two groups (Group A and B) using the coin method. Group A received Gong’s mobilization along with hydro collator packs and isometric exercises, group B received Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides (SNAGs) along with hydro collator packs and isometric exercises. The treatment period lasted 4 weeks in total. Pain on visual analogue scale, Range Of Motion (ROM) by universal goniometer and functional disability on neck disability index was assessed on day one pre and post intervention at the end of two weeks and end of 4th week. Results: The findings of this study suggest that both the interventions are effective in reducing pain, improving ROM and decreasing the level of disability but particularly the Gong’s mobilization is more effective (P <0.01) in correcting posture, reducing pain, improving ROM and decreasing the level of disability. Conclusions: Gong’s mobilization can be utilized in the treatment of cervical spondylosis.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this case study was to find out the immediate effectiveness of an innovative approach in form of CAM (Compression with Active movements) in a woman with chronic osteoarthritis of knee. Participant was an individual with chronic osteoarthritis of knee participated in this study. The intervention was hands on manual therapy approach called compression with active movements where hamstrings muscle were compressed with therapist hands as if they were splinted or supporting by hand and simultaneously patient was asked to perform the active knee flexion and extension for three bouts of 10 repetitions. Main outcome measured in this case was pain relief in terms of visual analogue scale and active knee flexion. Pain was reduced by 3.1 cm on VAS scale and active knee flexion improved by 16 degree. Compression with active movements may be used for immediate relief of pain in chronic osteoarthritis of knee when it is associated with hamstrings spasm so as to get confidence of patient in performing active movements.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and microcurrent electrical nerve stimulation (MENS) on masticatory muscles pain bruxism patient. Materials and Methods : A total of 60 subjects with the clinical diagnosis of bruxism were randomly allocated to two study groups. Group A received TENS (50 Hz, pulse width 0.5 mSec, intensity 0-60 mA for 20 minutes for a period of seven days) and Group B received MENS (0.5 Hz, intensity 1,000 μA for 20 minutes for a period of seven days). The outcome measures were assessed in term of Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and digital pressometer of 2 Kgf. Results : The study showed significant change in intensity of pain as per VAS score ( P ≤ 0.0001) and tenderness as per digital pressometer ( P ≤ 0.0001). Conclusion : MENS could be used as an effective pain-relieving adjunct to TENS in the treatment of masticatory muscle pain due to bruxism.
