ABSTRACT

Dashmularishta is an Ayurvedic formulation used widely as a health tonic. Since the mode of action of Dashmularishta has not been explored much in detail so far, we investigated its potential effects on antioxidant, antifatigue and immunostimulatory properties using in vitro as well as in vivo assays. The antioxidant potential was assessed by free radical scavenging (ABTS based) assay. Antifatigue potential was elucidated by DNA super coiling assay and swim endurance test model. Immunostimulatory effect on Natural Killer (NK) cells activity was evaluated using mouse splenocytes and YAC-1 based assay. Dashmularishta exhibited in vitro antioxidant and antifatigue potential and in vivo anti-fatigue properties in Swiss albino mice. Further, it also enhanced the in vitro NK cells activity at noncytotoxic concentrations.

Background: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal condition has a lifetime prevalence of up to 70% and this seems to be increasing in incidence. The diagnosis of these disorders is based primarily upon results of clinical tests. The prevalence of shoulder pain in India has not been reported. The aim of present study is to study and report the prevalence of various disorders causing shoulder pain in patients reporting to a tertiary care hospital in North India. Methods: This is a prospective hospital based cross-sectional study carried in a tertiary care hospital and 130 patients satisfying inclusion criteria over a period of two year were included. Results: Age of patients ranged between 23-69 years (51.36 ± 11.86 years). A predominance of females was observed (Male-Female ratio: 0.81:1). The commonest cause of pain was periarthritis shoulder (43.1%), subacromial (SA) impingement (13.8%), acute rotator cuff injury (13.1%), GH arthritis (10.0%) and AC Arthritis (8.5%). The major risk factors were diabetes mellitus, excessive overhead lifting and trauma. Conclusion: Periarthritis and subacromial pain syndrome are two most common diagnoses reporting to a tertiary care centre. Periarthritis is the commonest diagnosis in both genders. AC arthritis is more common in females (P <0.001) and rotator cuff injury is more in males (P <0.001). Periarthritis, GH arthritis and AC arthritis is much more common in fifth and sixth decades and rotator cuff injury is seen in young adults.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: Since not much information on Chandipura virus is available, an attempt was made to study the growth kinetics of the virus in certain vertebrate, invertebrate cell lines and embryonated chicken eggs. Methods: Comparative study of Chandipura virus (CHPV) growth kinetics in three vertebrate cell lines [Vero E6, Rhabdo myosarcoma (RD), Porcine stable kidney (PS) cell lines], two insect cell lines [Aedes aegypti (AA) and Phlebotomus papatasi (PP-9) cell lines] and embryonated pathogen free chicken eggs was conducted, by tissue culture infective dose 50 per cent (TCID50) and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Results: All the cell lines and embryonated egg supported the growth of CHPV and yielded high virus titre. The vertebrate cell lines showed distinct cytopathic effect (CPE) within 4-6 h post infection (PI), while no CPE was observed in insect cell lines. PP-9 cell line was the most sensitive system to CHPV as viral antigen could be detected at 1 h PI by IFA. Interpretation & conclusions: Our results demonstrated that all the systems were susceptible to CHPV and achieved high yield of virus. However, the PP-9 cell line had an edge over the others due to its high sensitivity to the virus which might be useful for detection and isolation of the virus during epidemics.
