ABSTRACT

Fine needle aspiration[FNA] cytology was performed on 199 patients with various breast lesions seen at the Medical City Teaching Hospital. The age ranged from 15 to 75 years with a mean age of 38.3 years. Fifty three [26.6%] patients had malignant tumours; 25 [12.6%] had atypical cytologic findings, 105[52.8%] had benign lesions, and 16 [8%] had inadequate cytologic material for diagnosis. The cytologic diagnosis was compared with the histologic diagnosis in 84 patients. The sensitivity of FNA of the breast in this study was 88.6%, specificity was 98%, and the overall accuracy was 94.5%. Thus FNA is a safe, accurate, simple, and reliable technique for the diagnosis of breast lesions

ABSTRACT

Fine needle aspiration biopsy [FNAB] was performed on 189 patients with thyroid lesions. 75 cases were studied cytologically and histopathologically, 2 cases were diagnosed as suspicious cytologically, proved to be malignant by histopathology, 66 cases were diagnosed benign cytologically, by histopathological examination 65 were benign and one case was malignant [false negative]. Thyroid FNAB is recommended as a preoperative procedure in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions

ABSTRACT

Two hundred and two breast aspirate specimens were examined cytologically. Ninety six cases were diagnosed as benign lesions agreeing with histopathological results. Seventeen cases were diagnosed cytologically as atypical suspicious for malignancy; histopathological studies showed that eight out of this group to be malignant, while the remaining nine cases showed benign changes. Thirty five specimens were diagnosed cytologically as positive for malignancy, the same results were seen histopathologically. On the other hand the remaining fifty four cases were insufficient for cytodiagnosis

ABSTRACT

Ninety patients of various gastroesophageal lesions and 10 normal control individuals were examined by brush cytology technique, endoscopy and punch biopsy when indicated. Bruch cytology was diagnostic in 96% of benign lesions and 82% of malignant lesions, which was comparable to endoscopic and histopathological diagnosis. Moreover the combination of the three methods was complementary and elucidated the diagnosis in all the patients studied

ABSTRACT

Urine of 245 patients with various urinary tract disorders were studied cytologically, and the findings were correlated with the clinical cystoscopic and histopathological findings of the biopsies taken from these patients. Malignant cells were detected in the urine of 91% of bladder cancer patients, 43% of either renal or prostatic cancer patients and in one patient with a ureteral tumour. Urothelial atypia [dysplastic and metaplastic changes] were detected in 50% of patients with chronic bilharzial cystitis and 59% of patients with urolithiasis-particularly those harboring vesical calculi, raising the speculation that these patients are high risk groups of developing bladder cancer. The overall accuracy of urine cytological examination was 90%, with false positive and false negative results respectively forming 2% and 8%

ABSTRACT

Cytological examination of pleural and peritoneal fluids from one hundred seventy one in patients of the Medical City Hospital were studied. Using Papanicoloau staining technique and the results were 44 cases with malignancy, 20 cases suggestive of malignancy and 107 negative. In order to minimize the suggestive results, a modified May Grunwald Giemsa [M. G. G.] and cytochemical staining technique Periodic Acid schiff [PAS] were applied. This technique proved a valuable tool in this respect
