ABSTRACT

Background: There is paucity of data emanating from vulnerable population who are employed one in theprominent dust generating industries in this region including rice mills. The present study aims to study theeffect of paddy husk exposure on pulmonary functions in rice mill workers of Kolar.Materials and Methods: 250 rice mill workers and 250 age matched unexposed subjects were recruitedbased on various inclusion and exclusion criteria &Pulmonary Function Tests were performed.Results: There was significant reduction of FVC, FEV1, PEFR in the exposed population (p<0.001) andsignificant increase in FEV1/FVC ratio (p<0.043) as compared to unexposed subjects. There was no significantdifference in pulmonary function between rice mill workers with duration of exposure lesser than 5 years,5-10 years and greater than 10 years.Conclusion: There was impairment in pulmonary functions in rice mill workers. There is early impairmentof pulmonary function after exposure which does not seem to deteriorate further suggesting that severity ofexposure might play a more significant role in further deterioration rather than duration of exposure alone.FEV1/FVC was above 70% indicating restrictive lung disease.

ABSTRACT

Low cardio-respiratory fitness is prevalent in type 2 diabetics. The objectives of the present study was to assess the effect of an exercise on VO2max and HbA1c in type 2 diabetic patient. The baseline VO2max and HbA1c of 30 diabetics were estimated. VO2max was estimated using the Bruce protocol. HbA1c was measured by ion-exchange chromatography with Bio-Rad D10. After an exercise regimen for a period of 6 months, they returned to check their VO2max and HbA1c. The baseline VO2max was 32.67±11.99 ml/kg/min (low for given age) and HbA1C% values were high (7.58±1.66). After walking it was found that VO2max increased and HbA1c decreased significantly. Exercise improves cardiorespiratory fitness and lower HbA1c. So, a suitable exercise should be incorporated along with diet and drug prescription.
