ABSTRACT

A study has been conducted to see the relationship between Q-oTc interval and neonatal hypocalcemia study group consists of 75 Newborns(full-Term 57, premature 18), whose conditions were Known to be susceptable to the development of hypocalcemia and all of them were admitted to the newborn service of Kyungpook National University Hospital during 6 months period from February to August, 1978. Following results were obtainod: 1. Overall incidence of hypocalcemia was 32%, with highest rate of 70% occurring in high-risk premature group, and 3 out of 4 cases with sever hypocalcemia, defined as serum calcium level below 5mg% were noted inpremature group. There was no sexual difference. 2. cardinal sympotoms were irritability and convulsion,. Convlsion was seen in all cases with severe hypocalcemiam compared to 41% with serum calcium level above 5mg%, subtle type of seizure was the commoest form, occurring in 8 cases, followed by generalized tonic type and multifocal type 3. O-oTc interval was prolonged in 83.4% of hypocalcemia and Q-Tc interval only in 37.5%, There was statistically significant correlation between Q-oTc and serum calcium level, showing = -0.41(P<0.01) in premature and = -0.47(P<0.01)in full term. In summary, we recommend Q-oTc interval as a quick and reliable screening test to detect hypocalcemia in newborn period.

ABSTRACT

A case of systemic mastocytosis in a 6 year old boy was presented. Skin lesions started to appear and spred several days after birth along with severe itching sensation, and intermitent abdominal pain & constipation developed at the age of 5. On physical examination, he was found to be underdeveloped (Height less than 3rd percentile) with normal vital signs. Liver was felt 1 1/2 fb below costal margin, spleen 2 fb. There were many brown to dark brown-colored irregular shaped maculopapulourticarial skin lesions, scattered all over the body, along with multiple thickened areas, and positive Darier's sign was noted. On upper GI series, many honey-combed filling defect were found throughout small intestine. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnossis : showing multiple scattered infilteration of mast cells.

ABSTRACT

Total 114 cases of the patients of nenatal tetanus were clinically evaluated who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Kyungpook National University hospital from Jan. 1967 to Aug. 1976. The results were as follows; 1. The unmber of patients yearly means were about 12 cases whics was 2.7% of total admitted patients of Pediatrics. 2. There was revealed the high incidence of the male than the female and its ratio was about 2.5:1. 3. The mortality rate was 50.6% 4. Home delivery with no sanitory facilities was a problem of the neonatal tetanus. 5. The majority of patients (85.4%) were 4-8 days of age on admission. It is clear that recovery correlates more closely with the age of admission. Patients with on admission over 7 dqys had a good prognosis. 6. The 101 cases out of the total 75 cases were admitted during 3 dys after onset that death was related to complication. 7. The most common chief complaints on admission were poor sucking (97.4%), trismus, (95.6%), and cdnvlsion (93.0%). 8. Hypothermia and hyperpyrexia was significantly correlated with mortality. 9. The main complications were pneumonia, hyperpyrexia and asphyxia which showed poor prognosis.
