ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of complex training on injury, flexibility, and muscle stiffness in high school male football players. @*Methods@#A total of 60 football players were included in the study and were divided into three groups viz. the complex training group (CTG), 11+ training group (11 + TG), and traditional training group (TTG). Injuries were recorded based on the prospective investigation method after starting the study, and the flexibility and muscle stiffness of the subjects were evaluated. @*Results@#The research results showed that the injury rate per match was significantly lower in the CTG and 11 + TG than the TTG. In the CTG, the flexibility of the hamstrings significantly increased and the stiffness of the rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), and tensor fascia latae (TFL) muscles significantly decreased (p < 0.05). In the 11 + TG, the stiffness of the RF significantly decreased (p < 0.05). In the TTG, the flexibility of the hamstrings significantly increased (p < 0.05). Hamstring flexibility showed a significantly higher increase in the CTG and TTG compared to the 11 + TG (p < 0.05). Also, the stiffness of the RF and TFL muscles showed a significantly higher decrease in the CTG compared to the 11 + TG and TTG (p < 0.05). The stiffness of the BF muscles too showed a more significant decrease in the CTG compared to the TTG (p < 0.05). @*Conclusion@#The complex training method of the Fédération International de Football Association (FIFA) 11+ and self-myofascial release (SMFR) as a warm-up program, prevent injuries, enhance flexibility, and lower muscle stiffness of football players in high school. Thus, it is necessary to ensure the widespread use of the complex training program by instructors and players under the supervision of the Korea Football Association (KFA), given its reliability in preventing injuries and improving the performance of football players.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional, case-control study. PURPOSE: To investigate associations between physical fitness measures and disabilities related to back pain and quality of life (QOL) by the presence of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) in elderly Korean women. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: LSS leads to decreased functioning and reduced QOL. However, correlations among physical fitness, disability, and QOL have not been investigated in elderly women with LSS. METHODS: Participants included women aged 65 years and older (n=192), divided into a study group (n=38) and a control group (n=154) based on the presence/absence of LSS. All participants underwent physical function and fitness tests. Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores and EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) scores were used to assess disability and health-related QOL. RESULTS: The results for the handgrip strength, sit-and-reach, functional reach, and timed up and go (TUG) tests were significantly higher in the control group than the LSS group. ODI scores were significantly higher and EQ-5D-5L scores significantly lower in the LSS group. TUG and functional reach test scores were significantly correlated with ODI scores, and handgrip strength was strongly interrelated with ODI and EQ-5D-5L scores in the LSS group. No other physical fitness measures showed statistically significant relationships with ODI or EQ-5D-5L scores. CONCLUSIONS: In elderly Korean women with LSS, back pain-related disability and QOL are significantly associated with some physical fitness parameters such as handgrip strength. Handgrip strength reflects general muscle strength, which is significantly interrelated with the level of disability and QOL. Our results suggest that enhancing generalized muscle strength helps to reduce disability due to back pain and improve QOL in patients with LSS.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Medullary carcinoma of the breast is an uncommon subtype of infiltrating ductal carcinoma and its incidence in different series ranges between 2% and 8% of all breast canoers. The histopathologic criteria for medullary carcinoma of the breast used by most pathologists today were delineated by Ridolfi et al. in 1977. The criteria of typical medullary carcinoma include all of followings: 75% or more of syncytial growth pattern, microscopically completely circumscribed, no intraductal component, moderate to marked diffuse mononuclear stromal invasion, nuclear grade 1 or 2. Medullary carcinoma has a more favorable prognosis than usual invasive breast cancer. MATERIALS & METHODS: To determine clinical characteristics of this tumor, the medical records of 15 women with typical medullary carcinoma treated at KCCH between 1985 and 1996 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The incidence of typical medullary carcinoma in KCCH was 0.51%(15/2946) of all breast cancers. Age ranged from 27 to 56 years and mean age was 40.1 years. The peak age group was 4th decade(46.6%), followed by 5 th decade(40%). Most of the patients were premenopausal status(14/15). The major clinical manifestation of all patients was a palpable mass. Twelve patients were investigated for ER status, but all were negative. Preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology was checked in 6 patients, all cases showed positive findings for malignancy. The mean size of tumor was 3.01 cm in diameter and the rate of lymph node positivity was 40%(6/15). There was one case of systemic recurrence at 38 months after operation and the patient expired at 3 months after detection of recurrence. The others were alive without evidence of disease for mean follow-up period of 64.7 months. CONCLUSIONS: The mean age of the patients of medullary carcinoma was relatively younger than that of the patients with other usual invasive breast cancer. The incidence of medullary carcinoma in this study was slightly lower than western series. Medullary carcinoma showed good prognosis, even if estrogen receptors were negative, but to determine clinical characteristics of Korean medullary carcinoma of the breast, multicenter data should be collected.

ABSTRACT

The use of osseointegrated implants is an accepted procedure for the treatment of Total, or partial edentulism and offers good predictability of long-term success. Osseointegration implies a firm and direct interlocking between vital bone and screw-shaped titanium implants. There should be not to interposed tissue between fixture and bone. This study was undertaken to assess the clinical condition, complication, and prosthodontic aftercare of different implant systems. One hundred fifty-nine patients treated with a total of 503 endosseous implants (364 Steri-oss threaded type, 69 Integral cylinder with HA coated type, 35 Steri-oss threaded with HA coated type, 21 Steri-oss cylinder with HA coated type and 14 3i implant type), Most of the implant were placed in type B and C bone quantity and type 2 and 3 bone quality according to Lekhorm and Zarb. The success rate of Steri-oss threaded type during healing and function was 92%, Steri-oss threaded type with hydroxyapatite coated was 91%, Steri-oss cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90%, Integral cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90% and 3i implant type was 93%. One hundred twenty-nine patients had been treated with implant prosthesis. 79 of these patients had received a fixed type prosthesis and 50 patients had received a removable type prosthesis. There were no differences between the implant systems with regard to age, gender. Failures were associated with poor bone quality, smaller implant sizes, a surgical installation technique and stress distribution when in function. Visual analgoue scales recorded as satisfied results functionally and esthetically, but 15% dissatified with chewing ability.
