ABSTRACT

Abstract The northwestern portion of the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest ecoregion is one of the most disturbed and fragmented areas in the Atlantic Forest, and little is known about the local avifauna. In this study, we have described the composition and diversity of the aquatic avifauna of this region and analyzed the patterns of similarity with respect to the seasonal as well as spatial distribution. We used the line transect sampling technique in six distinct humid areas (including lentic and lotic water bodies) during the dry and rainy seasons of 2012 and 2013. A total of 52 species of waterfowl were recorded. The species richness of the studied areas was surprisingly distinct; only seven waterfowl species, namely Cairina moschata (Linnaeus, 1758), Tigrisoma lineatum (Boddaert, 1783), Rosthramus sociabilis (Vieillot, 1817), Aramus guarauna (Linnaeus, 1766), Vanellus chilensis (Molina, 1782), Jacana jacana (Linnaeus, 1766), and Arundinicola leucocephala (Linnaeus, 1764), were common to these six studied areas. This indicated that the other bird species that were observed might be habitat selective. Moreover, the analysis of the composition of birds in the two seasons (dry and rainy) combined with their spatial distributions showed significant dissimilarities between the areas with lotic (river and constructed wetland) and lentic (lagoons) characteristics. Nevertheless, despite the small extent and low total richness of the entire study area, it was found to be home to 1/3 of all freshwater aquatic birds documented in the state of São Paulo, with the record of 5 migratory species and 11 new species added to the northwest of the state. The heterogeneity of local aquatic environments, habitat selection combined with seasonality, and the absence of other humid locations in the surroundings can explain the diversity and distribution of these birds in the water bodies of this uninvestigated Atlantic Forest ecoregion.


Resumo A porção noroeste da ecorregião Floresta Atlântica do Alto Paraná é uma das mais alteradas e fragmentadas da Mata Atlântica, da qual pouco se sabe sobre a avifauna local. Nosso objetivo foi descrever a diversidade e composição da avifauna aquática, bem como analisar os padrões de similaridade quanto a distribuição temporal e espacial destas aves nesta ecorregião. Utilizamos a transecção linear para amostragem em seis áreas úmidas (corpos dágua lênticos e lóticos), nos períodos de seca e chuva entre 2012 e 2013. Registramos 52 espécies de aves aquáticas e as riquezas das áreas mostraram-se distintas, pois apenas Cairina moschata (Linnaeus, 1758), Tigrisoma lineatum (Boddaert, 1783), Rosthramus sociabilis (Vieillot, 1817), Aramus guarauna (Linnaeus, 1766), Vanellus chilensis (Molina, 1782), Jacana jacana (Linnaeus, 1766), and Arundinicola leucocephala (Linnaeus, 1764) foram comuns às seis áreas, o que indica seleção de habitat. Quando analisada a composição das aves nos dois períodos aliada à distribuição espacial, encontramos dissimilaridades temporais acentuadas entre os ambientes com características lóticas (rio e aterro) e lênticas (lagoas). Isto mostra que, além das diferentes épocas sazonais, é necessário analisar separadamente os diferentes tipos de áreas úmidas. Por fim, apesar da extensão pequena e baixa riqueza total, a área amostrada abrigou 1/3 das aves aquáticas de água doce para o estado de São Paulo, cinco espécies migratórias e 11 novas espécies para o noroeste do estado. A heterogeneidade de ambientes aquáticos locais, forte seleção de habitat aliada à sazonalidade e ausência de outros locais úmidos em seu entorno, explicam a diversidade e distribuição destas aves estreitamente relacionadas aos corpos dágua desta desconhecida ecorregião da Mata Atlântica.

ABSTRACT

The use of bladder antimuscarinics is very common in the elderly. However, recent population-based studies that assessed the use of anticholinergics or bladder antimuscarinics showed an increased risk of dementia when these drugs were used for a prolonged period. Several of these population-based studies included patients who used solifenacin, which is a bladder antimuscarinic released in 2005 with the prospect of being a more selective antimuscarinic for M3 receptors (M3R), which could make it a safer drug when trying to avoid unwanted effects of older bladder antimuscarinics such as oxybutynin, especially with regard to changes in cognition. Since the various bladder antimuscarinics have distinct pharmacological characteristics, such as in the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, in selectivity for muscarinic receptors, and in brain efflux mechanisms, their effects on the central nervous system (CNS) may vary. Solifenacin was the drug selected in this review, which aims to describe the results of several articles published in recent years reporting the effects of solifenacin on cognition or the risk of dementia development. Although preclinical studies show that solifenacin can also act on brain M1 receptors (M1R), short-term clinical studies have shown it to be safe for cognition. However, there are no long-term randomized studies that prove the safety of this drug for the CNS. Thus, until the safety of solifenacin has been established by long-term studies, it seems advisable to avoid prolonged use of this drug in elderly patients.

ABSTRACT

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest challenges to treat bacterial infections worldwide, leading to increase in medical expenses, prolonged hospital stay and increased mortality. The use of blue light has been suggested as an innovative alternative to overcome this problem. In this study we analyzed the antibacterial effect of blue light using low emission parameters on Staphylococcus aureus cultures. In vitro bacterial cultures were used in two experimental approaches. The first approach included single or fractionated blue light application provided by LED emitters (470 nm), with the following fluencies: 16.29, 27.16 and 54.32 J/cm2. For the second approach a power LED (470 nm) was used to deliver 54.32 J/cm2 fractionated in 3 applications. Our results demonstrated that bacterial cultures exposed to fractionated blue light radiation exhibited significantly smaller sizes colonies than the control group after 24 h incubation, however the affected bacteria were able to adapt and continue to proliferate after prolonged incubation time. We could conclude that the hypothetical clinical use of low fluencies of blue light as an antibacterial treatment is risky, since its action is not definitive and proves to be ineffective at least for the strain used in this study.


A resistência a antibióticos é um dos maiores desafios para o tratamento de infecções bacterianas em todo o mundo, levando ao aumento de despesas médicas, prolongamento da internação hospitalar e aumento da mortalidade. O uso da luz azul tem sido sugerido como uma alternativa inovadora para superar esse problema. Neste estudo, analisamos o efeito antibacteriano da luz azul usando parâmetros de baixa emissão em culturas de Staphylococcus aureus. Culturas bacterianas foram usadas em duas abordagens experimentais in vitro. A primeira abordagem incluiu o uso da aplicação única ou fracionada de luz azul fornecida por emissores de LED (470 nm), com as seguintes fluências: 16,29, 27,16 e 54,32 J/cm2. Para a segunda abordagem, um LED de potência (470 nm) foi usado para fornecer 54,32 J/cm2 fracionado em 3 aplicações. Nossos resultados demonstraram que as culturas bacterianas expostas à radiação de luz azul fracionada exibiram colônias de tamanhos significativamente menores do que o grupo controle após 24 h de incubação, no entanto, as bactérias afetadas foram capazes de se adaptar e continuar a proliferar após um tempo prolongado de incubação. Podemos concluir que o uso clínico hipotético de baixas fluências de luz azul como tratamento antibacteriano é arriscado, pois sua ação não é definitiva e mostra-se ineficaz, pelo menos para a cepa utilizada neste estudo.

ABSTRACT

A ordem dos Passeriformes é uma das mais pressionadas pelas ações antrópicas, especialmente as relativas ao tráfico de animais, que, devido às más condições de manejo e higiênico-sanitárias, favorecem a infecção dos espécimes por patógenos virulentos e zoonóticos, como cepas de Escherichia coli e Salmonella spp., cujo isolamento em suabes cloacais, bem como a análise dos genes de virulência das cepas de E. coli foram objetivos do estudo. Para isso, 120 Passeriformes silvestres nativos, recebidos pelo Cetas/CE, foram avaliados individualmente. As cepas isoladas foram submetidas a teste de disco difusão para determinação da sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos. Em etapa posterior, foi realizada PCR para a detecção de oito genes de virulência dos principais patotipos diarreiogênicos de E. coli. Quanto aos resultados, nenhuma cepa de Salmonella spp. foi isolada, no entanto a ocorrência de E. coli foi de 40,8%. Foi observada elevada resistência, principalmente aos antimicrobianos tetraciclina, ampicilina e sulfazotrim, ocorrendo multirresistência em 42,8% das cepas. Pela análise molecular, foram diagnosticados quatro entre os nove genes pesquisados, com a identificação de EPEC típicas, EPEC atípicas, ETEC, EHEC e EAEC. Os resultados apontam para a importância de Passeriformes como possíveis disseminadores de zoonoses.(AU)


The order Passeriformes is one of the most pressured by anthropic actions, especially those related to animal trafficking. Due to poor sanitary and hygienic conditions, the infection of the specimens is favored by virulent and zoonotic pathogens such as strains of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., whose isolation in cloacal swabs as well as the analysis of the virulence genes of E. coli strains were the objectives of the study. For this, 120 native wild Passeriformes, received by CETAS/CE were individually evaluated. The isolated strains were submitted to diffusion disc test to determine sensitivity to antimicrobials. In a later stage, PCR was performed for the detection of eight virulence genes from the main E. coli diarrhoeagenic pathogens. Regarding the results, no strain of Salmonella spp. was isolated; however, the occurrence of E. coli was 40.8%. High resistance was observed, mainly to the antimicrobials Tetracycline, Ampicillin and Sulfazotrim, with multi-resistance in 42.8% of the strains. By molecular analysis, four of the nine genes were diagnosed, identifying typical EPEC, atypical EPEC, ETEC, EHEC and EAEC. The results point to the importance of Passeriformes as possible disseminators of zoonoses.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In this work, lemon and onion biomasses commonly found in street markets are for the first time used to develop a facile, fast and low-cost one-step microwave-assisted carbonization method for synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solubility, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the CDs and riboflavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and riboflavin as acceptor. A linear relationship between FRET and the riboflavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was observed, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for riboflavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and <2.6% (n = 3), respectively. CDs were successfully synthesized in a domestic microwave oven (1450 W, 6 min), presenting satisfactory parameters when compared with results of other studies reported in the literature, suggesting that the proposed method is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of CDs and determination of riboflavin.

ABSTRACT

Salmonella Gallinarum is capable of causing high mortality in birds of the order Galliformes. This study aimed to relate the presence of clinical signs with the recovery of Salmonella Gallinarum from organs and c loacal swabs of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix) experimentally infected. A total of 70 female quails were housed in a pair per cage and divided in two groups (IG: quails inoculated with 1.5x106 CFU of Salmonella Gallinarum Nalr/mL and CG: control group). After the inoculation, birds were evaluated three times a day to verify the presence of clinical signs. Birds that presented ruffled feathers, eyes closed and remained quiet in the cage were removed for euthanasia, as well as the same number of birds from the inoculated groups that presented no clinical signs and from the control group. Cloacal swabbing was performed following euthanasia for the sampling of liver, spleen, caeca, ovarian follicles and lung for microbiological procedure. Quails with clinical signs and quails found dead presented positivity of 100%. While inoculated quails with no clinical signs presented a lower positivity (38.5%). Therefore, quails with septicemia caused by SG present clinical signs of the disease and the pathogen can be isolated and quantified in the organs.(AU)


Salmonella Gallinarum pode causar alta mortalidade em aves da ordem Galliformes. Objetivou-se neste estudo relacionar a presença de sinais clínicos com a recuperação de Salmonella Gallinarum de órgãos e swabs cloacais de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix) experimentalmente infectadas. Um total de 70 codornas fêmeas foram alojadas em par por gaiola e divididas em dois grupos (IG: codornas inoculadas com 1,5x106 UFC de Salmonella Gallinarum Nalr / mL e CG: grupo controle). Após a inoculação, as aves foram avaliadas três vezes ao dia para se verificar a presença de sinais clínicos. As aves que se apresentaram com penas eriçadas, olhos fechados e permaneciam imóveis na gaiola foram removidas para a eutanásia, assim como o mesmo número de aves dos grupos inoculados que não apresentaram sinais clínicos e do grupo controle. O swab cloacal foi realizado após a eutanásia para a amostragem de fígado, baço, ceco, folículos ovarianos e pulmão para procedimento microbiológico. As codornas com sinais clínicos e as encontradas mortas apresentaram positividade de 100%, enquanto as codornas inoculadas sem sinais clínicos apresentaram menor positividade (38,5%). Portanto, codornas com septicemia causada por SG apresentam sinais clínicos da doença e o patógeno pode ser isolado e quantificado em diversos órgãos.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In a 17-kb genomic fragment of Trypanosoma cruzi chromosome XX, we identified three tandemly linked genes coding for CX2CX4HX4C zinc finger proteins. We also showed that similar genes are present in T. brucei and Leishmania major, sharing three monophyletic groups among these trypanosomatids. In T. cruzi, TcZFP8 corresponds to a novel gene coding for a protein containing eight zinc finger motifs. Molecular cloning of this gene and heterologous expression as a fusion with a His-tag were performed in Escherichia coli. The purified recombinant protein was used to produce antibody in rabbits. Using Western blot analysis, we observed the presence of this protein in all three forms of the parasite: amastigote, trypomastigote and epimastigote. An analysis of cytoplasmic and nuclear cell extracts showed that this protein is present in nuclear extracts, and indirect immunofluorescence microscopy confirmed the nuclear localization of TcZFP8. Homologues of TcZFP8 in T. brucei are apparently absent, while one candidate in L. major was identified.

ABSTRACT

A Cebus apella monkey weighing 4 kg was trained in a saccadic eye movement task and while the animal performed the task we recorded the extracellular activity of perirhinal cortical neurons. Although the task was very simple and maintained at a constant level of difficulty, we observed considerable changes in the performance of the monkey within each experimental session. The behavioral states responsible for such variation may be related to arousal, motivation or attention of the animal while engaged in the task. In approximately 20 percent (16/82) of the units recorded, long-term direct or inverse correlations could be demonstrated between the monkey's behavioral state and the cells' ongoing activity (independent of the visual stimulation or of the specific behavior along a trial). The perirhinal cortex and other medial temporal structures have long been associated with normal memory function. The data presented here were interpreted in terms of recent reports focusing on the subcortical afferents to temporal lobe structures and their possible role in controlling arousal, motivation, or attention.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinomas are aggressive tumors with a high dissemination power. An early diagnosis of these tumors is of great importance in order to offer the possibility of curative treatment. For an early diagnosis, abdominal ultrasound and serum alpha-fetoprotein determinations at 6-month intervals are suggested for all patients with cirrhosis of the liver, since this disease is considered to be the main risk factor for the development of the neoplasia. Helicoidal computed tomography, magnetic resonance and/or hepatic arteriography are suggested for diagnostic confirmation and tumor staging. The need to obtain a fragment of the focal lesion for cytology and/or histology for a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma depends on the inability of imaging methods to diagnose the lesion. Several classifications are currently available for tumor staging in order to determine patient prognosis. All take into consideration not only the stage of the tumor but also the degree of hepatocellular dysfunction, which is known to be the main factor related to patient survival. Classifications, however, fail to correlate treatment with prognosis and cannot suggest the ideal treatment for each tumor stage. The Barcelona Classification (BCLC) attempts to correlate tumor stage with treatment but requires prospective studies for validation. For single tumors smaller than 5 cm or up to three nodules smaller than 3 cm, surgical resection, liver transplantation and percutaneous treatment may offer good anti-tumoral results, as well as improved patient survival. Embolization or chemoembolization are therapeutic alternatives for patients who do not benefit from curative therapies.

Luego de reminiscencias personales en torno a la vida, obra y personalidad de José Arana, se efectúa un análisis crítico muy preliminar de su obra psiquiátrica social y transcultural. Cuatro renglones esenciales de la obra araniana son el establecimiento de claros vínculos entre ideología y realidad, el planteamiento de importantes interrogantes heurísticas, la propuesta de soluciones pragmáticas a problemas específicos y la presentación de ideas originales. Se concluye que Arana se constituyó en un pensador psiquiátrico y un humanista de la más alta calidad, y que su obra refleja el influjo de factores individuales, generacionales e histórico-personales, base de una coherencia esencial

ABSTRACT

A natureza dos aspectos psiquiatricos e psicossociais das condicoes vistas na area de abrangencia da Unidade Sanitaria Murialdo desafia a aplicacao dos sistemas classificatorios de morbidade psiquiatrica usados em todo o mundo, para aquelas condicoes que nao sao bem definiveis psicopatologicamente. A analise de 242 pacientes adultos que comparecem a consulta em postos de saude que prestam cuidados primarios mostra que, dos 118 pacientes considerados casos definidos, 70% estao classificados entre aqueles que apresentam marcantes bases psicossociais. Para estes as classificacoes internacionais correntemente usadas nao sao adequadas, uma vez que elas lidam periferica e inadequadamente com estes casos, que sao o nucleo do trabalho diario em locais de cuidados primarios. A necessidade de identificar reacoes psicossociais nao enquadradas nos sistemas classificados atualmente existentes e salientada bem como a de pesquisar sobre este tema para que se possa chegar a conclusao que sirvam a paises subdesenvolvidos e tambem desenvolvidos

ABSTRACT

A definicao de cronicidade para os doentes mentais nao e simples e assume maior dificuldade a nivel de servicos que prestam cuidados primarios, onde a maioria dos problemas de saude mental surgidos nas consultas se enquadra entre aqueles casos que apresentam marcadas bases psicossociais. Os autores abordam a longa duracao dos sintomas e a interacao entre o paciente e sua familia, o grupo social ao qual pertencem e o servico de saude que ele frequenta, como fatores cruciais para a definicao de cronicidade. Introduzem e sugerem o uso de conceito de paciente psicossocialmente cronico. Estudam, ainda o uso de criterios estritos para a definicao de problemas de saude mental sugerindo que a nivel de concessao de cuidados primarios se deve ser mais sensivel as preocupacoes da comunidade e dos proprios pacientes que usam criterios elasticos para se definirem como psicossocialmente cronicos

ABSTRACT

A biomedical survey was conducted in 10 villages in remote, high mountain valleys of Central and South Sulawesi, Indonesia to learn whether Oriental schistosomiasis was endemic and to determine the prevalences of other intestinal parasites, malaria and filariasis in those areas. Although persons with Oriental schistosomiasis were found in three villages of South Sulawesi, follow-up inquiries revealed that these had recently migrated from a known schistosomiasis area in Central Sulawesi. Other intestinal parasites diagnosed were Ascaris lumbricoides (14%), Trichuris trichiura (7%), hookworm (68%), Entamoeba histolytica (3%), Entamoeba coli (17%), and Giardia lamblia (5%). Enterobius vermicularis, Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichostrongylus sp., Physaloptera sp., Diphyllobothrium sp. heterophyid, echinostome and dicrocoelid-like termatodes, Endolimax nana and Chilomastix mesnili were detected infrequently. Malaria parasitemias due to Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax and P. malariae were detected in 4% of the sampled populations, Malayan filariasis was diagnosed in 21% of the subjects examined.
