ABSTRACT
O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o perf l da utilização da sedação com óxido nitroso pelos cirurgiões-dentistas da cidade de Porto Alegre/RS. A partir dos dados obtidos no Conselho Regional de Odontologia/RS, identificaram-se 21 profissionais habilitados em sedação consciente. Um questionário estruturado com perguntas abertas e fechadas foi aplicado obtendo-se retorno de 76%. Os resultados evidenciaram que 70% dos entrevistados utilizam a técnica rotineiramente em consultório particular, sendo que 40% são especialistas em Odontopediatria. Com relação à experiência profissional, observou-se que seis formaram-se nas décadas de 70 e 80, e quatro na década de 90. Como vantagens citam a efetividade na redução da ansiedade e o baixo risco. Dentre as desvantagens destacam o custo associado à técnica e a necessidade de cooperação do paciente. Embora pouco difundida e utilizada no Brasil, a sedação com óxido nitroso possui grande potencial para utilização, especialmente em Odontologia Pediátrica.
The aim of this study was to know the profi le of the usage of nitrous oxide by dentists of the city of Porto Alegre/RS. Based on the data of the CRO/RS, we identifi ed 21 qualifi ed professionalsin Porto Alegre/RS. A structuralized questionnaire with open and closed questions was sent to the surgeon dentists with 76% of return (16). The results evidenced that 70% (11) of the interviewed professionals use the technique routinely, being that 40% are specialized in Odontopediatrics.Regarding the professional experience, it was noticed that six (6) graduated in the 70s and 80s and four (4) graduated in the 90s. The positive points mentioned were the effectiveness in reducing theanxiety and fear and the low risk. The negative points mentioned were the high cost of the technique and the need of patients cooperation. Although this technique is used by few dentists, the conscious sedation with nitrous oxide has a great potential for its usage, specially in Odontopediatrics.
