ABSTRACT

Introduction: Health promotion behavior is one of the health criteria. On the other hand, depression, anxiety and stress are the most common psychological problems among students. The aim of this study was to determine health promotion behaviors and its relation with anxiety and some students' demographic factors of Alborz University of Medical Sciences


Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, 160 students of the Alborz university were selected through simple random sampling method. The data collection instruments was a demographic questionnaire, [Spielberger Anxiety Inventory] with 40 items and Health- Promoting Lifestyle Profile II [HPLP-II] questionnaire with 52 questions


The validity of instruments was determined by content validity and the reliability was obtained by internal consistency and alpha Cronbach coefficient for Spielberger Anxiety Inventory [alpha=0.90] and for [HPLP-II] questionnaire [alpha=0.92]


The data was analyzed with SPSS/18


Findings: Anxiety prevalence among students was 58.9 percent in this study. Among subsets of health promoting behaviors, spiritual growth index with a mean [2.99???0.56] and physical activity index with a mean [2.16???0.64], were assigned to the highest and lowest scores, respectively. Between health promoting behaviors and gender [P<0.0001] and being native and study of non-school related books [P=0.001] a significant relationship was found. The relation between anxiety and health promoting behavior was decreasing; hence the strongest significant relationship was between anxiety and spiritual development index [-0.56]


Conclusion: The results indicate anxiety among over than half of students, reverse relationship between health promoting behaviors and anxiety and inappropriate health behaviors, especially in the aspects of health promoting physical activity and nutrition among students. Conducting this research in other universities is recommended

ABSTRACT

Fear of death, lack of knowledge and fear of treatment and its complications, lack of assurance of recovery, possibility of occurrence of problems in their family are predisposing factors in occurrence and intensity of psychological reactions such as stress, anxiety and depression in the women with breast cancer. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the effect of designed exercise program on stress, anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. This quasi-experimental study was conducted on a total of 56 women with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy, refereed to Imam Khomeini hospital of Tehran in 2006. Using DASS-21 and demographic questionnaires, data were collected. The patients in experimental group used the designed exercise program at home for 20 to 30 minutes every day, for 3 to 5 days per week for 9 weeks [3 cycles of chemotherapy]. In control group, the routine helps were conducted. All patients were followed up. Data were analyzed using X[2] and t test. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the cases of demographic characteristics, cancer stage, and method of surgery. Also, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the cases of stress, anxiety, and depression, before intervention. However, following intervention, the mean of stress, in the case and control groups were 7.25 +/- 4.42 and 10.82 +/- 5.46 for anxiety were 4.07 +/- 2.72 and 7.07 +/- 4.8, was and for depression were 3.82 +/- 8.83 and 7.32 +/- 5.12, respectively [P<0.01]. Based on the results, the designed exercise program was effective to reduce stress, anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy in this research

ABSTRACT

Psychological stress; decrease of physical, emotional and social function; sexual dysfunction and change of body image due to diagnose and cure of breast cancer influenced quality of life of patients and their family. This study was carried out in order to evaluation of physical, emotional and social dimensions of quality of life in breast cancer women undergoing chemotherapyThis study is Analytical - Descriptive - Cross sectional study that was carried out on fifty six breast cancer women undergoing chemotherapy in cancer institute center of Tehran Imam Khomeini hospital in 2006. The research samples were selected through simple sampling method according to the determined characteristics for the research samples. Data collection tools include quality of life breast cancer version [QOL - BC] and demographic questionnaire. In physical dimension of QOL, 62/5% of patients had good QOL and 37/5% had moderate QOL and in emotional dimension of QOL, 42/9% had good QOL and 55/4% had moderate QOL and 1/8% had poor QOL; whereas in social dimension of QOL 21/4% had good QOL and 71/4% had moderate QOL and 7/1% had poor QOL. The total mean of QOL of patients in three dimensions of QOL [physical, emotional and social] was moderate. Also data analysis showed that there were a statistically significant correlation between age with emotional dimension of QOL [P=0/049] and between recent time of chemotherapy with physical dimension of QOL [P=0/000] and total quality of life [P=0/001]. The women are one of the most important branches of family and society so improvement of QOL in breast cancer women results in not only improvement of their survival but also results in increase of family QOL and more consistency of family and society construction therefore it is necessary that treatment team evaluate and improve QOL in this patients.
