ABSTRACT

The present study included 40 infertile women with polycystic ovarian disease [PCOD] attending the infertility clinic of Ain-Shams Gynecology and Maternity hospital. Ovulation induction was induced by clomiphene citrate from the 2nd to the 6th day of the menstrual cycle. IGF-I serum level was estimated in the 2nd and 7th day of the cycle. Ovulation induction was assessed by progesterone serum level in day 21 of the cycle. Ovulation induction succeeded in 26 cases and failed in 14 cases. Success of induction of ovulation was associated with 22% decrease of IGF-I, while the decrease was 11% in cases who did not ovulate. The present study demonstrated that ovulation induction with clomiphene citrate in patients of PCOD may involve the reduction of IGF-I serum level, though the mechanism involved in this reduction is unknown. This finding suggests that IGF-I plays a major role in the pathogenesis of PCOD

ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to measure the cytokine RANTES concentration in both the peritoneal fluid and serum of women with and without endometriosis, to test the potential utility of this cytokine as a non-invasive marker of endometriosis. This study includes 30 patients for whom laparoscopy was done for various indications, 15 of them were having endometriosis of various degrees of severity, were taken as group I [cases]. The other 15 patients were having normal laparoscopic findings and were classified as group II [control]. RANTES concentrations were measured in peritoneal fluid and serum of both groups using [ELISA] technique. It was found that there is a highly significant increase of RANTES concentration [P < 0.001] in both peritoneal fluid [2299.4 +/- 1417 pg/ml] and serum [93.1 +/- 29.1 pg/ml] of patients in group I than that in peritoneal fluid [6.50 +/- 289.8 pg/ml] and serum [45.56 +/- 22.27 pg/ml] of patients in group II. It is concluded from this study that peritoneal fluid and serum concentration of RANTES is significantly increased in patients with endometriosis with a significant positive correlation with the increased severity of the disease and its measurement in the serum could be used as a non-invasive marker in patients with endometriosis

ABSTRACT

The effects of short-term starvation [6 days] on the pituitary testicular function of adult male rats were studied, while the serum reproductive hormone levels were measured at the end of the study. Fasting decreased body weights by 19.83% [P< 0.001], testicular weights by 6.16% [P< 0.05] and those of seminal vesicles by 51.28% [P< 0.001]. On the other hand, the ventral prostate weights showed statistical non-significant 10.53% reduction. The serum level of the hormones were significantly declined. Lutenizing [LH] by 46.43% [P< 0.05], folliclestimulating [FSH] by 38.89% [P< 0.01], prolactin by 44.12% [P< 0.05] and testosterone by 39.71% [P< 0.01]. It is apparent from this study that, food restriction resulted in suppression of reproductive functions

ABSTRACT

Diabetes was induced in rabbits by injecting alloxan in their ear vein. These animal were classifid into two groups, one groups were sacrificed after 3 months, while the other groups were sacrificed after 5 months. A third group was considered as a control. The eyes were enucleated and prepared for histological study after staining with haematoxylin and eosin, and PAS stains. The eyes were examined for their cornea, conjunctivas, irides, ciliary bodies ans choroids. The changes, which were met with, were identified and discussed
