ABSTRACT

Ticks are one of the important external parasites in livestock that can transmit viral, ricketsia and bacterial agents. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of contamination of the livestock by ixodid ticks and harboring of enterobacteriaceae by the ticks in Amol City. In this descriptive study, we collected the livestock's ticks [cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats] and after fauna identification, they were sent for culture. In this study, 650 ticks were collected which belonged to 8 species. Hyalomma asiaticum asiaticum was the most and Rhipicephalus bursa was the least prevalent species. Cattles and buffaloes had the highest tick infestation [38.5%]. The bacteriological results showed that the ticks were infected by 13 bacterial species such as Ecoli, Klebsiella, Salmonella, Proteus, Serratia, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermis. The most and the least prevalent species were Ecoli and Serratia respectively. Considering the high prevalence of ixodid ticks in our study and presence of bacterial infection in hard ticks, appropriate training for stock breeders for improvement of their knowledge of the health problems, stock breeding and common methods of zoonotic disease prevention such as spraying and anti-tick bath, is recommended

ABSTRACT

Hepatitis C virus [HCV] is a major cause of chronic liver disease among chronic renal failure [CRF] patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of HCV infection in patients on haemodialysis of Jahrom. This cross-sectional study was caaried out on all haemodialysis patients of Jahrom in April - May 2006. All patients were screened for anti-HCV antibodies, using ELISA and confirmed by using RIBA methods. We found that 3 patients [8.8%] were anti-HCV positive by ELISA and 2 [5.9%] patients were confirmed by using RIBA methods. Seroprevalence of HCV in the heamodialysis patients of Jahrom was 5.9% that is lower than seroprevalence of HCV in haemodialysis patients of other countries

ABSTRACT

Background: Several factors may influence teaching-learning process. One of them is individual learning style

Objective: Determining the learning style [based on the Kolb experiential learning theory] among nursing students of Qazvin university of medical sciences in relation to educational progress marks

Methods: This cross-sectional study has been carried out in Qazvin during 2000 - 2001 [academic year]. A questionnaire [including demographic questions and Kolb learning style inventory] was used to gather the data. 195 persons participated in the study by completing the questionnaires data were analyzed by descriptive and chi-square statistical tests

Findings: Results indicated that most of the students were as assimilator [53.8%] and the others were converger [28.9%], diverger [11.2%], and accomodator [6.1%]. No significant relation was seen between learning styles and academic marks

Conclusion: Nursing students have different learning styles and teachers must consider it and use different teaching methods. It seems that the learners are very flexible in different learning tasks
