ABSTRACT

Myxoid liposarcoma is the major subtype of liposarcoma and commonly presents in the extremities, particularly in the thigh. We introduce an unusual case of a myxoid liposarcoma presenting as a large perineal swelling occupying the para-rectal and para-anal spaces in a 49-yearold male patient. The diagnosis, management, and prognosis of myxoid liposarcoma are discussed. A literature review is performed for myxoid liposarcoma.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of a 48-year-old Indian male who presented with swelling and firmness in his left upper part of the abdomen of one month duration with anorexia and weight loss. Initial examination revealed an intra abdominal mass of around 16.8x11.0x24.5cm with minimal left sided pleural effusion. A biopsy from the mass confirmed the diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumour [GISTs] as supported by immmunohistochemistry results which showed strong positivity for c-kit while stains for smooth muscle actin, desmin, myoglobin, S100 Protein and cytokerstin remained negative. The patient was not suitable for surgical intervention in view of advanced tumor, and Imatinib Mesylate 400mg daily was started with the aim of making the tumor operable. Such therapy lasted for twenty months and was tolerated well by the patient. It then resulted in gradual tumor regression, following which the patient underwent successful tumor resection. Post surgical resection patient had no radiological evidence of intra abdominal tumor but mild left sided pleural effusion with left lower lobe atelectasis. The patient had uneventful post operative recovery and he is currently on Imatinib mesylate and tolerating treatment well with mild skin rash. The experience with preoperative imatinib on surgical resection rates and post operative outcomes is limited especially with primary locally advanced GISTs. In our case successful surgical resection was possible for a huge locally advanced GIST with unusually prolonged treatment of twenty months with imatinib preoperatively

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to evaluate high dietary fiber orange products which could be used as one of the functional food products. High dietary orange products were evaluated physically, chemically and sensorally. Orange products of juice [OJ], concentrated juice [COJ], sacs [OS], puree [OP] and blends of them were analyzed for their TDF, IDF and SDF contents by enzymatic and gravimetric method. Also, Transmission Electron Microscope was used to evaluate high fiber orange products. Among the orange products, the TDF, IDF and SDF contents in fresh weight basis ranged between 1.05-3.32%, 0.15-1.34% and 0.9% to 1.98% in individual OJ, COJ, OS and OP, respectively. F Orange blends products [COJ+OS and COJ+OP] characterized with their higher TDF [3.30 and 3.23%, FW] and SDF contents [2.10 and 2.32%. FW]. The obtained results indicated also that, the pasteurized orange products [OJ, OS, OP and its blends] had a positive effect on controlling the color, or retarding color changes, if compared with the color of natural orange juice [un-pasteurized juice]. it is obvious that the pasteurized orange product studied samples inhibit the development of A 420 nm and red colour a. Pasteurization of high dietary fiber orange products decreased sedimentation and pectinmethylesterase [PME] activity to the lowest value if compared with fresh orange juice. The pasteurized COJ characterized with its higher acceptability for all sensory properties if compared with other orange products. Also, sensory properties of OS or OP improved if blended with COJ. Transmission Electron Microscopy and computerized image analysis of particle size distribution declared the morphology-property of high fiber orange products studied samples

ABSTRACT

Traditional medicinal knowledge on 21 plant species in the Chittagong Hill Tracts has been documented which have the active principles for the treatment of malaria. These plants are being used in the Chittagong Hill Tracts by the 13 tribal communities in traditional medicine for hundreds of years with reputation as efficacious remedies although there may not be sufficient data available for sustaining their efficacy in this regard. Short diagnostic description, systematic position and tribal names of the plants are described. Plant preparation, dose and period of use are directly translated from Chakma Marina Pharmacopoeia in collaboration with tribal professional practitioners and bilingual tribal guides of Khagrachari Hill District, Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

ABSTRACT

In the present paper an attempt has been made to find out the pharmacognostical, phytochemical and analytical characteristics of Salvadora persica, an important medicinal plant being used traditionally for the treatment of various ailments. The important parameters studied are macroscopic characteristics, fluorescence behaviour under UV light, successive extractive values, total ash, acid insoluble ash, quantitative ash analysis for inorganic constituents and qualitative analysis of different extractives for organic chemical constituents. TLC, IR, HPLC finger prints of different extractives and their analyses have also been performed
