ABSTRACT

The present study evaluated the effects of diets enriched in saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids [n-3 and n-6] on reproductive indices, metabolic hormones and metabolites prior to ram introduction in oestrus synchronized ewes. Zel ewes [n=188] were assigned to 4 groups. Ewes in the control group [CON] did not receive fat. Ewes in the 3 other groups received 3% oil/DM/day of palmolein oil [PLM], safflower seed [SAF], or flaxseed [FLX]. Fat supplementation was carried out for 31 days [day 0 = initiation of fat supplementation]. Oestrus was synchronized using CIDR for 14 days starting from day 16 of fat supplementation. Rams were introduced 24 h after CIDR removal. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 30, and 39. There was no difference in oestrus expression and mating parameters among groups. There was no difference in non-esterified fatty acids [NEFAs], insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1] between day 0 and day 30 among groups. However, changes in cholesterol and LDL concentrations during the same occasions were greater in PLM, SAF, and FLX groups than in CON [P<0.05]. There was no difference in reproductive indices, including: fertility rates, prolificacy and sex ratio of lambs among groups. In conclusion, diets enriched in n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid prior to mating did not affect reproductive performance, insulin, IGF-1 and progesterone in Zel sheep

ABSTRACT

Regarding to the role of opioid receptors in peripheral cutaneous sensations and central itch procession, this study was designed to determine the efficacy of oral Naltrexone in the treatment of pruritus in patients with eczema in comparison with placebo. Thirty eight patients with eczema complaining of pruritus were studied. Pruritus scores were evaluated. Patients were given the placebo [n=20] or Nalterxone 50 mg [n=18] for a two-week period. During the study, pruritus scores were distinguished by a visual analogue scale [VAS] system and recorded in patients questionnaires three times, at the start of study, after 1 week, and after 2 weeks In the both groups VAS score were decreased, although Naltrexon was more effective than placebo in decreasing the VAS scores, both in 1st week week [P < 0.005] and 2[nd] week [P< 0.001]. Adverse events [mainly nausea and sedation were observed in 3 patients [2 in Naltrexon group and 1 in placebo group] Naltrexone is more effective than placebo in treatment of pruritus in patient affected with eczema. Naltrexone might be considered as an adjuvant remedy in treatment of pruritus

ABSTRACT

Chronic renal failure requires intensive medical care such as dialysis and kidney transplantation. These interventions may result in different socio-psychological problems. The present study was conducted to compare these complications before and after the transplantation.75 patients who had been hospitalized in Taleghani and Shahid Hasheminejad hospitals in Tehran in 1998 were evaluated. Finally, 54 patients who have undergone operation were selected. Demographic data, GHQ-28 questionnaire [to assess general health], revised form of SCL-90 [to assess anxiety and depression] and PDAS-II [to assess psychiatric disability] were completed before and after the operation.Depression and anxiety did alter significantly. The mean depression was 8.25 +/- 8.10, and 7.09 +/- 7.11 before and after the operation [p < 0.05], however, the mean anxiety was 6.06 +/- 6.19 and 5.00 +/- 4.987 before and after the operation [p < 0.05]. Kidney transplantation did not alter the psychiatric disability and also general health status. Results have revealed that dialysis-related psychological disorder [anxiety and depression] may decrease as the dialysis terminate, however, this alteration was not that significant to change subjects' life style, at least during the study period]
