ABSTRACT

Oral carcinoma is among the most common cancers and one of the top-10 causes of death worldwide. Oral squamous cell carcinoma [OSCC] has the highest incidence and the lowest survival rate among oral cancer cases. The study of OSCC epidemiology, incidence rate, and its association with age and gender among the patients could provide the oral and maxillofacial specialists as well as health officials and policy workers with valuable information. Analysis of OSCC incidence rate and its association with sex and age among the oral cancer patients in the Guilan province during the 1378-87 period. This descriptive and prospective study was done by reviewing 12686 files of the cancer patients recorded by the Guilan Cancer Registry Center during 1377-87. Medical information including age, gender, the type of cancer, and anatomical location of the tumor were extracted from the patients' records. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software and chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis. Among the total number of files studied, 2364 [18.6%] were diagnosed as head and neck carcinoma cases, of which 1152 [48.7%] were recorded as SCC, with a male to female ratio of 1.7:1 and a mean age of 63.41 +/- 15.41 years. The most involved areas were tongue with 35.2% cases and buccal region with 24.4% cases. The 70-80 year age group had the largest number of 37patients [28%] with OSCC. Our results show that the incidence of OSCC is significantly higher in the 8th decade of life. We also found that the most common risk site of the tumor in young patients is the tongue

ABSTRACT

Adenomatoid hyperplasia is a rare lesion of the minor salivary glands characterized by localized swelling that mimics a neoplasm. The pathogenesis of adenomatoid hyperplasia is uncertain. Microscopic examination demonstrates lobules of hyperplastic mucous glands that are close to the mucosal surface. In this article, a case of Adenomatoid hyperplasia in a 57 year old man is reported followed by a discussion on its clinical and histopathological characteristics

ABSTRACT

The Nasopalatine duct cyst is the most common developmental nonodontogenic cyst of the oral cavity, occurring in about 1% of the population. The most common presenting symptoms include swelling of the anterior palate, drainage and pain. Occasionally, this cyst is seen unilaterally. Nasopalatine duct cysts are treated by surgical enucleation. Recurrence and malignant transformations are rare. We reported a 54 y/o male patient from Tabriz. His chief complaint was unilateral swelling of the anterior right side of the maxillary mucosa. In clinical examination, a slight and painless swelling in the region of the right maxillary central, lateral and canine teeth was seen. Occlusal radiographs demonstrated well defined unilocular radiolucency. Final histopathologic diagnosis was "Nasopalatine duct cyst"

ABSTRACT

Neurofibroma is the most common type of peripheral nerve neoplasm. It arises from a mixture of cell types including schwann cells and perineural fibroblasts. It can arise as solitary tumor or may be a component of neurofibromatosis. The skin is the most frequent location for neurofibroma. Lesions of the oral cavity are uncommon, but when occur, the tongue and buccal mucosa are the most common intraoral site. On rare occasions, the tumor can arise centrally within bone, either as a well demarcated or poorly defined unilucular or multilucular radiolucency. In this article, a case of solitary intraosseous neurofibroma of mandible in a 10 years old girl with a discussion on its clinical, radiological, and histopathological characteristics is reported

ABSTRACT

The influence of hypo- and hyper-thyroidism on spermatogenesis was studied in 60-day-old adult male Wistar rats. To confirm hypo- and hyper-thyroidism, the concentration of plasma thyroid hormones were assayed by radioimmunoassay. The hypothyroid state, induced by administration of 25 mg/kg/day methimazole for 5 successive days, resulted in significant decrease in the number of Sertoli cells, sperm count, Leydig cells and the diameter of seminiferous tubules. The hyperthyroid state, induced by administration of 1 mg/kg/day L-thyroxine for 10 successive days, increased the number of Sertoli cells, sperm count, Leydig cells and the diameter of seminiferous tubules. Serum levels of FSH and LH and testosterone were also evaluated. Hypo- and hyper-thyroidism had no effects on the concentrations of FSH and LH, while the concentration of testosterone was significantly increased in hyperthyroid state; it decreased in hypothyroid state in comparison with the control euthyroid rats. In conclusion, our data indicated that hypo- and hyper-thyroidism affect spermatogenesis through their effects on germinal, interstitial and Sertoli cells but not through the pituitary-gonadal axis
