ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose: Patients whit body dysmorphic disorders have dysfunctional negative thoughts about their physical appearance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of metacognitive intervention on body dysmorphic disorder in a 20-year-old male case

Methods and Materials: This case study used the single case experimental design to reduce the symptoms of a male patient with BDD diagnosis. To collect the data, the client completed the questionnaire in pre-test [as a base-line], last treatment session [as the post-test], and six months after treatment [follow-up]: Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale Modified for BDD [YBOCS-BDD], Thought Fusion Instrument [TFI], Body Dysmorphic Metacognition Questionnaire [BDMCQ], and Beck Anxiety inventory [BAI]. For data analysis, the data chart analysis and graphical methods were used and based on the ascending and descending trend of the scores, effectiveness of the intervention was judged

Results: The scores for the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up examinations were 30, 10, and 10, respectively. His scores of the TFI were 820, 100, and 120, respectively. Finally, the scores for BDMCQ came up to be 45, 10, and 11, respectively, and the scores for [BAI] were: 47-16-18 respectively. Based on the clinical significance measures, the reduction of the symptoms was significant

Conclusion: The metacognitive intervention is effective in reducing the symptoms of the body dysmorphic disorder

ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose: P53 gene is a tumor suppressive gene and its product, P53 protein, is a protective factor against tumor formation that inhibits the extension of genetically damaged cells. P53 aggregation in tumoral cell nucleus is related with p53 gene mutations, which can be detected by immunohistochemical methods. This study was designed to investigate the protein aggregation in patients with gastric cancer in Gorgan, Iran

Methods and materials: All paraffin-embedded blocks of gastric cancer cases during the years 2000 to 2004 in the pathology ward of the 5th Azar Hospital in Gorgan, Iran [111 cases altogether] were evaluated and stained, for detecting microtome cutting. The obtained data were entered into SPSS and chisquare was used for analysis

Results: 111 cases with gastric cancer were investigated. The most frequent type of gastric tumor was adenocarcinoma [66.7%]. In 59.5% of the affected cases, P53 protein was detected. No significant relationship was observed between P53 expression and factors such as age, gender, and histological type of the tumor

Conclusions: In this study, P53 protein rate was high but it showed no significant relationship with other variables. We suggest further studies to discover the relationship between protein aggregation in tumor cells and other variables in affected cases

ABSTRACT

Thiopental sodium is not and ideal intravenous drug for inducing general anesthesia and compared to intravenous anesthetic drugs like propofol has a long standing recovery time. The aim of this study was to compare the recovery duration of propofol and thiopental sodium in ECT [Electroconvulsive therapy]. Methods: In a clinical trial, 70 patients aged between 15-40 years old in ASA class I and II were selected for ECT. They were randomly divided into two groups of 35 patients. After patient monitoring, 2-3 mg/kg thiopental sodium or 1-1.5 mg/kg propofol [Randomly in each patient] and then 0.5 mg/kg succinylcholine were administered. Patients were ventilated with mask and oxygen [100%]. After ECT, seizure and recovery durations were recorded. During these procedures, blood pressure and heart rate were recorded before and after anesthetic induction and 1 and 5 min after ECT. Findings: Mean recovery duration of propofol and thiopental sodium were 5.49 +/- 2.57 min and 6.4 +/- 3.69 min, respectively [P=0.233]. Also, seizure duration of propofol and thiopental sodium were 32.06 +/- 13.78 sec and 35.06 +/- 10.08 sec [P=0.302]. Hemodynamic changes [Systolic blood pressure] in two groups were not significant except at 1 minute after seizure [P<0.05]. Conclusion: According to the results, there was not a significant difference between two groups in seizure and recovery duration. But propofol can prevent increasing hemodynamic response to ECT better than thiopental sodium. In patients with hypertension or restriction of thiopental sodium, propofol can be a suitable replacement

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Patients' satisfaction is a point, which has nowadays found its importance in medical Services. This can be a good scale to measure and evaluate medical services quality-reflexing patients' needs, expectation and wishes fulfillments. This study has tried to investigate the patients' satisfaction from medical and nursing service

Methods: This is a descriptive study of which the data were collected by questionnaires including three sections [demographic characteristics and satisfaction levels from medical and nursing services]. The subjects included 358 Patients' randomly selected, being discharged from hospital. Satisfaction levels were measured with Lickert scale in which the patients had been asked to determine their satisfaction from services by words as quite satisfied, somehow satisfied, dissatisfied, quite dissatisfied and indifferent

Results: The findings showed that most of the patients [68.7%] were satisfied with medical services while this value was 66.5% for nursing services. X[2] test was used to determine the association between demographic characteristics and satisfaction. The statistical results showed a significant association between sex, age, education degree, hospitalization history and satisfaction from medical nursing service

Discussion: On the whole, the findings showed that medical and nursing services have satisfied the subjects. The patients were more satisfied with specific wards, possibly either due to a lower life expectancy in these ward which decreases patients expectation or more precise care the doctors and nurses provide the patients with in these wards

ABSTRACT

Aim and Background: Having knowledge about dental pulp tissue and its treatment along with the patient's attitudes toward the mentioned treatments are of high importance, not only for the practitioner but also for the patient

Methods and Materials: the present research is a cross - sectional and descriptive study, conducted in Gilan dental faculty, from March of June 2003. A questionnaire was completed by the patients about the demographic information and their knowledge and attitude son root canal therapies. All the questions were confirmed by endodontics professors consisting of 15 questions on the level of knowledge and 6 remaining ones on the patients' attitudes. After the experimental stage, the sample size, at 95% confidence coefficient, was determined as 111. The data were analyzed by SPSS software and regression test

Results: the results showed that 8.1% of the patients had a very weak knowledge, 27.9% had a weak knowledge where as the knowledge of the 45%, 16.2% and 2.7% of the patients were average, good and excellent, respectively. Considering attitude, 69.496, 28.8% and 1.8% of the patients showed positive, negative and indifferent attitudes, respectively

Conclusion: it is suggested that, prior to the initiation of the treatment, a pamphlet on the basic information about root canal therapy should be provided for each patient
