ABSTRACT
Background: Treatment of COPD depends on disease severity, phenotype and exacerbation risk. Inhaled medications are the treatment of choice in COPD. We undertook this survey to find the most commonly prescribed inhalational medication in COPD as per the severity of the disease. Methods: It was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey of pulmonologists in real-world clinical practice settings conducted across India. Results: The participants included 806 pulmonologists across India. Seventy-five per cent of pulmonologists ranked symptom relief, reduction in the frequency of exacerbations and improvement in lung function as the most important treatment targets. In COPD patients falling under GOLD group A, the treatment choice by pulmonologists in descending rank order was fomroterol/glycopyrronium (32%), ipratropium (38%), and tiotropium (30%) and for gold group B, this was fomroterol/glycopyrronium (34%), followed by indacaterol/glycopyrronium (26%) and tiotropium/formoterol (40%). In the GOLD group E, triple therapy (formoterol/glycopyrronium/budesonide) was preferred by 41% of pulmonologists. In the frequent exacerbator, predominant emphysema, chronic bronchitis and concomitant asthma phenotype, 44%, 38%, 46% and 32% of pulmonologists ranked formoterol/ glycopyrronium/budesonide as their preferred 1st therapy, respectively. Among COPD patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) comorbidity, 31% of pulmonologists selected formoterol/glycopyrronium/budesonide as 1st-preference drug therapy. Similar results were obtained for COPD patients with metabolic syndrome comorbidity. Conclusions: For the management of COPD patients, pulmonologists predominantly preferred a triple drug combination of formoterol/glycopyrronium/budesonide in GOLD group E and also in patients with cardiovascular and metabolic comorbidities. Fomroterol/glycopyrronium was the most preferred combination for GOLD group A and GOLD group B.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Acacia mangium is a pioneer species with fast growth and frequently used in the recovery of degraded areas. The objectives were to evaluate insects and spiders, their ecological indices and interactions on A. mangium saplings in a tropical degraded area in recovering process. The experimental design was completely randomized with 24 replications, with treatments represented by the first and second years after A. mangium seedling planted. Numbers of leaves/branch, branches/sapling, and ground cover by A. mangium saplings, Hemiptera: Phenacoccus sp. and Pachycoris torridus; Hymenoptera: Tetragonisca angustula and Trigona spinipes, Brachymyrmex sp., Camponotus sp. and Cephalotes sp.; Blattodea: Nasutitermes sp. and Neuroptera: Chrysoperla sp.; abundance, species richness of pollinating insects, tending ants, and the abundance of Sternorrhyncha predators were greatest in the second year after planting. Numbers of Hemiptera: Aethalium reticulatum, Hymenoptera: Camponotus sp., Cephalotes sp., Polybia sp., T. angustula, T. spinipes, tending ants, pollinating insects, Sternorrhyncha predators and species richness of tending ants were highest on A. mangium saplings with greatest numbers of leaves or branches. The increase in the population of arthropods with ground cover by A. mangium saplings age increase indicates the positive impact by this plant on the recovery process of degraded areas.

Results: Out of 205 undergraduate medical students, 106 (51.7%) were suffering from anxiety, 70 (34.1%) were suffering from stress and 119 (58%) were suffering from depression. Around 112 (54.6%) of students faced difficulty in paying academic fees and 127 (62%) of students had difficulty due to cut shorting of clinical postings. The female students had higher prevalence of stress and anxiety compared with males which was statistically significant (p=0.04, 0.01 respectively). Conclusions: The presence of depression, anxiety and stress was prevalent among medical students. It has to be addressed with mentorship programmes, counselling and by ensuring leisure activities in the campus.
ABSTRACT
Background: Suboptimal dietary zinc intake is widespread in India due to low levels of plant-available zinc in soils and limited food choices. The aim of this study was to enhance the zinc concentration in soil and plant by using farmyard manure (FYM) enriched with zinc fertilizers and zinc solubilizers respectively. Additionally, the response of maize to three forms of zinc fertilizer was determined. Maize crop grown under zinc-deficient soils contain lower zinc concentration, which can cause human illness and a drastic effect on yield can be noticed. Therefore, enhancing zinc content in plants by using FYM enriched with zinc solubilizers and inorganic zinc fertilizers is the best approach to increase zinc content in soil and plants. Methods: A field experiment was conducted to study the physico chemical properties of soil under maize (Zea mays L.) in response to the application of FYM enriched with ZnSB and ZnSO4 on sandy loam soils at College Farm, Agricultural College, Mahanandi campus of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University during rabi, 2021-2022. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with eleven treatments and replicated thrice. Results: The results revealed that significantly higher and comparable values of available nitrogen (302, 299 and 281 kg ha-1 respectively), phosphorous (73.40, 66.53 and 58.40 kg ha-1 respectively) and zinc (1.76, 1.54 and 1.15 mg kg-1 respectively) at different growth stages of maize were registered with application of FYM @ 10 t ha-1 enriched with ZnSO4 @ 50 kg ha-1. Whereas available potassium, Iron, manganese, copper, soil pH, EC (dS m-1) and OC (%) were not significantly affected by the application of FYM enriched with ZnSB and ZnSO4.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Fertilization with dehydrated sewage sludge can speed up the recovery process of degraded areas due to nutrients concentration, favoring the development of pioneer plants such as Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Beth (Fabales: Fabaceae) and the emergence of insects. This study aimed the evaluation of chewing, pollinating insects, predators, their ecological indices and relationships on A. auriculiformis plants fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments (with and without dehydrated sewage sludge) and 24 repetitions. The prevalence of chewing insects Parasyphraea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Nasutitermes sp. (Blattodea: Termitidae), and Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813) (Orthoptera: Romaleidae), defoliation, and ecological indices of abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera were observed on fertilized A. auriculiformis. Acacia auriculiformis plants, with a superior number of branches/tree, revealed greater abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera, species richness of pollinating insects, defoliation, numbers of Parasyphraea sp. and T. collaris. The ones with larger leaves/branches displayed greater abundance of species richness of Coleoptera and Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Therefore, the use of A. auriculiformis plants, fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge, is promising in the recovery of degraded areas due to the ecological indices increase of chewing and pollinators insects and spiders in the analyzed area.

ABSTRACT
Survival and growth of the native oyster Crassostrea gasar along the juvenile and adult phases were evaluated in three different stocking densities [low (D), medium (2D) and high (3D)] and in two grow-out systems (fixed and floating system). The fixed system consisted of a rack made with PVC, fixed from the bottom with wood sticks. The floating system consisted of floating bags suspended by a rack made with PVC and maintained submerged from the seawater surface by eight floats. Survival and shell height of oysters cultured after 30, 60 and 90 days were registered in each phase and in each grow-out system. Results showed that the grow-out system did not affect survival and growth of C. gasar in the juvenile and adult phases. The tested densities affected the survival of oysters cultured over time in both phases but did not affect oyster growth. At times analyzed, it was observed positive growth in juvenile oysters grow after 90 days of culture. However, in the adult phase, no growth was observed after 90 days of culture. Oyster yield was higher in the density 3D, in both juvenile and adult phases. These findings contributed to the development of the oyster C. gasar culture.(AU)

This study aimed to report the sanitary conditions through the hematological analysis of grouper E. itajara reared in captivity on estuarine conditions. Seven Goliath groupers (1,881.5±1,246.03g) were captured and kept in two tanks located on estuary. After 20 days, fish were collected for morphologic and hemato-physiologic evaluation. Two fish had clinical signs such as hemorrhagic spots and loss of scale due to agonistic behavior. Blood samples were collected, and the hematological parameters (biochemical, erythrogram and leukogram) were determined. Blood cells were characterized by their size, color and shape. Univariate statistic and principal components analysis were used to identify a hematological standard between fish with or without clinical signs. Four leukocyte types were found: lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophil and basophil. Regardless of the clinical signs the cell morphology did not present any difference among the fish. However, there is a significant correlation between erythrocyte and lactate on fish with clinical signs. Thus, agonistics encountered among the fish is a stressing factor in captivity conditions making it necessary to have adequate management related to the size of fish and stocking density.(AU)

The objective of this work was to evaluate the hematological responses of bola-pleco (Peckoltia oligospila) undergoing the stress of transportation. Variations on blood parameters were analyzed at 0, 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96h after transportation. Responses to stress were detected from 0 to 6h after the transportation of fish, however, most parameters returned to baselines values within 24h of transportation. The moment of 0h was the most critical, presenting higher values of glycemia, erythroblasts and erythrocytes. Late secondary responses were observed to total plasmatic protein, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) at 6h, returning to baselines values after this time. Leukocyte number was not affected by stress of transportation. The stress by transportation was not severe to influence the health of P. oligospila, indicating that fish is resistant to stress if compared to other species. However, we recommended no stressful procedures for at least 24 hours for recovery, in order to ensure health and survival of fish.(AU)

The phythotherapy is an alternative to use of chemotherapeutical agents against monogenean infection. This study evaluated the anthelmintic activity of essential oil Ocimum gratissimum against monogenean Cichlidogyrus tilapiae as well as its acute toxicity in tilapia juveniles. The mean lethal concentration (LC50) and different concentrations of the essential oil, both in vitro and in vivo assays (short and long-term baths) were assessed. The LC50 was 40.70mg.L-1 and in the in vitro assay this concentration showed 80% efficacy at the last two hours and in the in vivo assay 65.87% efficacy in long-term bath. However, it provoked morphological alterations on the gills such as hyperplasia and edema. The parasites exposure at the highest concentration (320mg.L-1) showed 100% mortality after 2h exposure in the in vitro assay, whereas in the in vivo assay, short-term baths of 5min for 3 consecutive days showed an efficacy of 87.71% without gills damage. These results demonstrate the anthelminthic activity of essential oil O. gratissimum and the safety concentration to use in Nile tilapia.(AU)

Abstract The present study evaluates the influence of anesthesia on the parasitic fauna of monogenea fish parasites, as its intensity and viability. Two experiments were conducted: Evaluation of an anesthetic method by sprinkling eugenol directly on gills and evaluation of monogenea motility and viability; Comparison of immersion and directly sprinkling on the gills with benzocaine and eugenol followed by evaluation on parasite intensity. The results suggest that the anesthetic sprinkling didn't interfere in the parasite motility, morphology and body surface integrity analyzed by fluorescence method. The monogenean intensity in the gills was lower in fish anesthetized by immersion method compared to the sprinkling method and the control group. This method of anesthesia can be used in parasitological studies.

Most antibiotics used today are isolated and extracted from microbial source. The emergence of antibiotic resistance and need for better, broad spectrum antibiotics is always in high demand. In the present study, antibiotic producing bacteria were isolated from a local soil sample. After primary screening, two bacterial strains (strain 1 and 2) were isolated, which showed antimicrobial activity against some common bacteria namely, E. coli, K. pneumonia, S. aureus, P.aeruginosa and M. smegmatis. The isolated strains showed prominent zones of inhibition against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. aureus and P. Aeruginosa but not against M. smegmatis. To identify the isolated strains, biochemical tests were performed and it was found that both the strains were Bacillus sp with some differences in cultural characteristics. The strains were also found to be resistant to some antibiotics such as tetracycline. The screen for the presence of any plasmid which might be influencing antibiotic production by these strains, the cultures were used for extraction of plasmids wherein, both the strains were observed to have a plasmid of ~ 10 kb. Further study in identification of these strains will be helpful in improving these strains for antibiotic production.
ABSTRACT
To study the anatomical and physiological factors that affect the bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) quality, were examined 396 ovaries obtained after slaughter of 198 Bos indicus females. Ovaries were categorized in nulliparous vs multiparous and progesterone (P4 - a corpus luteum at least one ovary) vs without progesterone (NP4 - absence of corpus luteum). All follicles were measured and categorized into small (<6mm), medium (6 to 9mm) or large (>9mm). Then all follicles were punctured and COCs recovered and assessed morphologically. There was no difference in COCs recovery rate or quality from nulliparous vs multiparous females. The rate of denuded or degenerated oocytes was higher in NP4 and expanded COCs were higher in P4. The COCs recovery and grades I and II rates were similar in P4 vs NP4 groups. Small follicles have lower COCs recovery rate than medium or large follicles, but the grade I oocytes rates was higher in small and medium follicles. In conclusion, the category of donor female and progesterone did not affect the quality of COCs selected for PIV and smaller follicles present best quality of COCs.(AU)

Several aspects related to bubaline mastits need to be clarified. Many conducts are adapted to this species by the knowledge adquired with the bovine species. This experiment aimed to evidence particularities of mastits in buffaloes and cows submitted to one-gland inoculation with 1.0 x 103 CFU of S. aureus. The animals were monitored through bacterial culturing milk, California Mastitis Test (CMT) and scores to assess the severity of mastitis. The following criteria were used: rectal temperature, appetite, milk production (systemic response to inflammation), somatic cell count (SCC), appearance/consistency of the gland and appearance of the milk secretion (localized response to inflammation). All animals developed hyperacute clinical mastitis. The bacteria was recovered from all challenged glands, with no significant difference in the percentage of isolation between the species until day 11 after inoculation, but with a difference (p<0.001) on day 30 post inoculation. The SCC with the electronic method and CMT, detected in buffaloes a more intense response right after the inoculation and a faster decrease of counting by the end of the experiment, when compared to cows. In both tests correlation with the bacterial culture was detected. In assessing the severity of mastitis, the averages of total score, of the score of local response and the systemic response score were higher in the bovine species (P<0.05). Throughout the observation period, there was a higher capacity of buffaloes in reaching the appropriate sanitary status, coming to the end of the experiment with the parameters closer to the physiological...

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, commonly used in the lamination industry, is a highly inflammable substance. Ingestion of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. It can cause injury to the gastrointestinal tract on ingestion, leading to gangrene or perforation. Gastric lavage is contraindicated as it is a highly corrosive substance. We report a patient with poisoning due to methyl ethyl ketone peroxide who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and developed gangrene of the bowel and died of septicaemia and multiorgan failure.
