ABSTRACT
Purpose: to evaluate the efficacy of topical 5-Fluorouracil [5-FU] in the treatment of conjunctival and corneal intraepithelial neoplasia
Methods: in a before-after clinical trial, patients with histologic evidence of intraepithelial neoplosia identified by tumor excision were studied. Following surgical excision, topical 5-FU 2% in artificial tear was administered twice daily for one month, and continued daily for another month. The presence or absence of clinically evident intraepithelial neoplasia was evaluated after treatment. Patients were also monitored for adverse reactions to topical 5-FU
Results: all patients were disease-free with a mean follow up of 14.2 months [range 7-18 month] and no adverse reactions with 2% topical 5-FU were noted
Conclusions: topical 5-FU 2% is well tolerated and effective in the treatment of conjunctival and corneal intraepithelial neoplasia when used as adjunctive treatment to surgical excision
