In a study performed on 40 completely edentulous males wearing dentures from scratch, alkaline peroxidases cleansers [Dr. Kleen and Coriga tablets] were superior than alkaline hypochlorite [clorox]. Regular cleanser use affects the total oral flora as well as Strept. mutans. Dentures' wear is accompanied by the appearance of Strept. mutans in the oral cavity

9 cases of Lhermitt Duclos disease [gangliocytoma of the cerebellum] operated upon in the past 14 years were presented. This relatively uncommon disease always presents with a vague complaint of headache that is insidious in onset, generalized and dull aching in character. It may deceive both the doctor and the patient because of its long duration before the appearance of other manifestations that are megalocephaly, other increased intracranial tension manifestations and cerebellar dysfunction manifestations. Typical findings in neuroradiology are presented. The operative technique and the position of the patients that was found most suitable [the concord position] are clarified. The chronic and the long standing history as well as the long survival postoperatively that betray the slow growth and the good prognosis are stressed. This dictates the utmost care from the side of the surgeon to fulfill total resection to ensure around 80% cure, especially because the tendency to pseudoencapsulation of the new growth helps much. The pollution of the industrialized areas [like Suez area which is one of the most heavily polluted regions in Egypt] probably have an etiological role in the pathogenesis

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis [SBP] was found to be a common complication of ascites. Patients with infected ascitic fluid had significantly higher serum Na, K and total protein levels than those with sterile ascitic fluid. Same conclusion was achieved for the ascitic fluid. Gram positive bacteria predominated the infected cases. Fungi were involved but to a lesser extent

Estimating serum C-reactive protein level in cases of bacterial meningitis showed 80% sensitivity and specificity which offers a rapid handy tool in the diagnosis until full diagnostic data are obtained CSF CRP was less sensitive and specific

Diabetics not prophylactically protected by antibiotics are more susceptible to transient bacteremia after teeth extraction [dental bacteremia], when compared with a similar healthy group. Bacteremia in both diabetics and control groups was transient. Resident oral florae were the predominant organisms in positive blood culture from both groups

Interferon-alpha and Ribavirin were assessed in treating cases with hepatitis C virus infection. Four patients [31%] out of 13 responded to interferon therapy and 2 patients [40%] out of 5 responded to Virazole. Antibodies for the virus were a guide for the diagnosis, and the monitor for cure was normalization of serum ALT level for more than 2 months after cessation of treatment

In an attempt to demonsrtate the diagnostic work up of obscure ascites and to evaluate the role of different diagnostic techniques especially abdominal paracentesis, abdominal ultrasonography and laparoscopy with guided biopsy, fifteen patients with obscure ascites were studied. Careful history, thorough clinical examination, laboratory investigations, ascitic fluid examination and abdominal ultrasonography were performed for every patient. Thereafter, laparoscopic examination was conducted in all cases. Under visual control, biopsies were taken from visible lesions and suspecious areas for histopotholoical examination. Finally causes of ascites in those patients were found as follows malignant liver [5 cases], tuberculous peritonitis in association with a chronic liver disease [5 cases], tuberculous peritonitis alone [1 case] and chronic liver disease alone [4 cases]. Laparoscopy proved superior to all diagnostic techniques used. It provided clear visualization and directed biopsy of intraabdominal organs by which a definite diagnosis was established in all cases. We were impressed with its safety and the ease with which our patients tolerated the procedure. Also this study revealed the importance of association of tuberculous peritonitis with chronic liver disease
