ABSTRACT

The liver exhibits a remarkable regenerative capacity after major resection provided it is normal. It is commonly assumed that a normal liver tolerates 70-80% resection safely. On the other hand, the capacity for regeneration after partial hepatectomy in chronic liver disease such as produced by schistosomiasis mansoni, is still unknown. The aim of this work is to assess DNA, thymidine kinase activity and liver function tests after partial hepatectomy in normal hamsters compared to those infected with schistosoma mansoni, this is to show the effect of schistosomal infestation on the regenerative ability of the liver. In the bilharzial groups there was a significant increase in the liver DNA level [P<0.005]. In the nonbilharzial group there was a highly significant increase in the liver DNA level [P<0.005]. In the bilharzial groups there was a significant increase in the liver thymidine kinase activity [P<0.005], in the non-bilharzial group there was a highly significant increase in the liver thymidine kinase activity [P<0.005]. In the bilharzial group there was a marked rise in the serum enzyme during the first three days after partial hepatectomy [P<0.005] and still high even after three weeks. In the non-bilharzial group there was a significant rise in time AST observed during the first three days after surgery [P<0.005] and returned to the preoperative mean value by the second post-operative week. .in the bilharzial group, total proteins showed a significant decrease [P<0.05] in relation to the pre-operative baseline value, and still after three weeks post-heptectomy [P<0.005] didn't recover to the pre-operative mean value. In the bilirarzial group there was a significant rise in sermon total bilirubin during the first three days after partial hepatectomy [P<0.005] which continued up to the third week post hepatectomy. In th non-bilirarzial group there was a significant increase observed up to three days after the operation [P<0.005] and started to drop after the first week posthepatectomy. The bilharzial group showed a significant rise in Serun Alkaline Phosphatase [P<0.05] during the first three days after the operation and returned to the baseline value after the first week after the operation. The non bilharzial group didn't show any changes throughout the whole periods after the operation

ABSTRACT

In this study, 125 patients with blunt popliteal artery injury during the 15 years period [1984-1999] had been classified into 2 groups, group A [50 patients] during the 7 years period [1984-1991] and group B [75 patients] during the 8 years period [1992-1999]. The amputation rate in the 2 groups had been compared against different variables as type of trauma, associated injuries, clinical presentations, type and site of popliteal artery injury, ischaemic time, pre-operative systemic anticoagulation, time use of intravascular shunts, use of fasciotomy and the timing of reconstructive procedures, in order to find out the causes of improved results

ABSTRACT

In this work, all patients with malignant thyroid tumors [367 patients] who presented to the National Cancer Institute [NCI] and Kasr El-Aini University Hospitals in the period from 1985 to 1992 were reviewed retrospectively. Females represented 61.04% of cases, while males constituted 38.96% of cases. The mean age for both sexes was 47.16 years, while that of females only was 46.59 years and of males was 48.06 years. Most of the patients presented with a thyroid swelling with or without cervical lymphadenopathy. Eight pathological types were identified, the commonest was papillary carcinoma [48.23%] and the rarest was Hurthle cell carcinoma [0.54%]. Total thyroidectomy was the commonest procedure adopted [60%]. Each of the subtotal thyroidectomy and hemithyroidectomy was adopted in 12.17% of the cases, while biopsy was adopted in 15.65% of the cases. Lymph nodes were retrieved from 49 cases, 43 of these were positive and 6 were negative

ABSTRACT

The present retrospective study was conducted on 50 cases with carcinoma of the stomach. In this series, the age ranged from 22 to 75 years with a mean age of 50 years. Males represented 60% of cases, while females represented 40%. The commonest presenting symptom was abdominal pain and dyspepsia in 56% of cases, and 70% of the cases presented more than 6 months after the onset of the symptoms. Malignant ulcer was the commonest endoscopic finding [46%] and the pylorus was the commonest site for tumor growth [50%]. Histopathologically, adenocarcinoma with different grades of differentiation was the commonest [50%]. Total gastrectomy was the commonest procedure adopted [70%], and esophago-jejunostomy was the method of restoration of gastrointestinal continuity in 70% of cases. Postoperative morbidity was manifested in 18% of cases and postoperative mortality rate was 4% after one-year follow up
