ABSTRACT

This study investigated the profile of orchidists, their cultivation practices, and their knowledge about pests in orchid cultivation in the state of Bahia. There were applied 74 questionnaires to producers (amateurs and commercials) in 23 municipalities. The data were submitted to univariate statistics using the chi-square test, the MannWhitney U-test and the KruskalWallis H-test. The survey shows that orchid cultivation is mostly practiced by women (67.6%) and those with higher education (48.7%). Most respondents were amateurs (87.8%). Insects (39.9%) and diseases (32.5%) were the main organisms associated with phytosanitary problems. The presence of insects was reported to occur mainly in the leaves (47%), mainly mealybugs (46.3%). Correspondence was significant between commercial and amateur groups according to the pairwise MannWhitney U-test(1) = 370.04 and p < 0.01. The KruskalWallis H-test(27) = 924.78 and p < 0.01 discriminated categories between the groups. Despite the growing interest in orchid cultivation in the state of Bahia, most orchidists are amateurs. The study warns about the risk of pest dispersion between crops since exchanging plants and purchasing specimens in open markets are common practices.

ABSTRACT

The focus of this paper was to get information about the diversity of bees visiting Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Stend. in the Recôncavo Baiano region. The species visiting the flowers were collected in the period from September to November 2005. For the collection of the bees, 15 inflorescences were defined randomly per hour, one minute being used per inflorescence, throughout the interval from 07:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m., during the blooming period. A total of ten species were identified, Apis mellifera being the most abundant species, with relative frequency equal to 25.40%, followed by Trigona spinipes (23.81%), Nannotrigona testaceicornis(14.28%), Xylocopa grisescens, and Trigona fuscipennis (both with 12.70%). The peak of bee visits occurred from 10:01a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A. mellifera, T. spinipes, and N. testaceicornis were considered the species with potential for the pollination of Gliciridia sepium flowers in the region of the Recôncavo Baiano.

ABSTRACT

Sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., is a cross-pollinating plant whose main pollinator are bees. This work was airmed at getting information about the diversity of visiting bee on sunflower inflorescence, by identifing the possible sunflower pollinators in Recôncavo Baiano region. The bees were collected on September-October of 2004, January-February and May-June of 2005 sunflowers hybrids (AG 920 and AG 930) cultivated in the entomology experimental area of Centro de Ciências Agrárias e Ambiental da Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil. Twenty six species were identified Apis mellifera (58.32 percent), Nannotrigona testaceicornis (18.53 percent) and Trigona spinipes (11.37 percent) were the most abundant species. The other species presented a frequency lower than relative 5 percent.
