ABSTRACT

This unusual case of squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva illustrates the significance of being highly suspicious of gum lesions of apparent inflammatory origin particularly those that are associated with loose teeth or exhibit tendency to recure after removal. These oral conditions which clinically, appear benin might actually represent a stage of squamous cell carcinoma

ABSTRACT

Burkitt's lymphoma occurred in a 28-month-old Egyptian boy whose condition was previously erroneously diagnosed as periapical abscess related to an upper primary molar. Roentgenographically, the lesion was characterized by diffuse erosion involving the right maxilla with invasion of the lateral wall of maxillary antrum. The histopathologic findings, the roentgenographic features and clinical course of the lesion were sufficiently diagnostic for Burkitt's lymphoma. The case was treated by radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy using cytotoxic drugs. Marfan syndrome concurred with the presented case of Burkitt's Lymphoma but without having any causal connection. The case was followed up for 7 years, after the institution of treatment

ABSTRACT

The effect of Anthraquinone Glycosides in combination with salicylic acid on periodontal condition was evaluated clinically and histologically. Patients were treated by the chemical agents once and three times per day. There was a clinical improvement in gingival condition while histological changes were noted in periodontal tissues. Further investigations are required for each component separately to determine which component had the delirious effect on gingival condition

ABSTRACT

Bleeding on probing is an objective clinical sign of gingival inflammation. The purpose of this investigation was to correlate the histologic features of the gingival tissues with the different degrees of bleeding Time index. Forty five gingival sites from 15 male patients, subjected to periodontal surgery were assessed for the presence or absence of gingival bleeding. The results indicated that no apparent histologic differences between score 111 and 1V. In addition, variability of histologic changes associated with score11. This finding suggested that the gingival bleeding Time index is not a sensitive measure for the degree of gingival inflammation

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of polishing on the tissue response to two dental alloys and two veneering materials, using a st and ardized subcutaneous implantation technique. Ten pellet shape samples [5 polished and 5 unpolished] were prepared for each material, cleaned, disinfected, and implanted in 5 adult albino rats, and 2 pellets [polished and unpolished], subcutaneously in each animal. Thirty days after the implantation, animals were sacrificed, and specimens were prepared and examined under light microscopy. From this study, it can be concluded that the polished gold alloy surface supported more tissue compatibility than polished non-precious alloy surface. Moreover, the glazed porcelain surface supported more tissue compatibility than polished composite resin surface. Also, there was a direct correlation between surface smoothness and nature of tissue reaction

ABSTRACT

Twenty-five male patients, ranging in age from 14 to 24 years were divided into 10 epileptic patients receiving Epanutin for 10 months in association with local factors [plaque and calculus], 10 epileptic patients receiving Epanutin without local irritant factors, and 5 volunteers with chronic gingivitis and free from any systemic disease [control group]. Analysis of the results revealed that in the presence of local irritants, both gingival inflammation and enlargement were apparent, compared to the noninflamed gingival group with Epanutin therapy. As regards the mast cells, they decreased in number and were most commonly degranulated. In noninflamed gingival group of epileptic receiving Epanutin, the mast cells appeared typical in shape, no degranulation and the number was decreased as compared to control group. These findings were interpreted as a direct effect of Epanutin on gingival mast cells augmented by irritant factors with resultant degranulation and elaboration of active cytoplasmic components

ABSTRACT

Twenty cases of oral lichen planus were collected from El-Hode El-Marsode Hospital at Cairo, Egypt. Biopsies were obtained from the lip and buccal mucosa to investigate the histopathological changes in the minor salivary gl and s. Acinar atrophy, ductal dilatation and periductal chronic inflammatory cells were demonstrated. Ranula, sialolithiasis and huge dilation of the blood vessels had not been previously reported in any diseases of salivary gl and s whether of primary or secondary involvement
