ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effectiveness of solid silicone intraorbital implants used after enucleations, or in secondary repair of anophthalmic spacious sockets. Patients and Fourteen patients [eight males, six females] were operated on between March 1991 and July 1996, 12 of the implants were primary and two were secondary. Age range was 1-52 years. The mean follow - up time was 11 months. Results:. Two implants were extruded, the first one because of improper closure of the overlying tissues, and the second ball was extruded after its implantation of a recently severely traumatized globe. All others were doing well and satisfied. To avoid the development post-enucleation socket syndrome, it must be a routine practice to insert an intraorbital implant after enucleation, especially in the primary procedures because they provide a satisfactory functional and cosmetic rehabilitation of the patients. Regarding volume replacement and motility, the primary implants are superior to secondary interventions. The silicone balls are a good alternative to the sclera covered balls especially when the second is not easily available as in our country. Also we are in need for professional oculists who can deal scientifically with the proper shape, casting and color of the prostheses, because the final touch of the oculist is very important to the cosmetic outcome of the procedure, the matter which the patient has as the first and final demand
