ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the confidence level of house officers in performing root canal treatment. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Rawal Institute of Health Sciences and Islamic International Dental Hospital from june 2017 to January 2018. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed among house officers of both hospitals. The questionnaire utilized scaled response to determine the level of confidence while performing various steps of root canal treatment. The level of confidence was categorized using 5-point Likert's scale as 1=not at all confident, 2=not very confident, 3=neutral, 4=confident and 5=very confident. Data were entered and analyzed in SPSS version 17.0. Counts and percentages were measured for various parameters of respondent's confidence level. Chi- square test was used to compare confidence level between the two genders and also between the two institutes. Majority of house officers were not confident in placement of rubber dam [44%], working length determination using apex locator [36%] and management of flare-ups [40%]. Male gender was found more confident than female regarding various steps of root canal procedure. House officers of Rawal institute of health sciences were more confident in some steps of root canal than house officers of Islamic international dental hospital. Overall it was concluded that though house officers were confident in performing root canal, however, they were found to have low confidence in performing difficult steps like rubber dam application, use of electronic apex locator and management of flare-ups

ABSTRACT

To determine the effects of pre-operative submucosal dexamethasone injection on postoperative swelling and trismus following surgical extraction of mandibular third molar. Randomized controlled trial. Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry [AFID], Rawalpindi, from October 2009 to March 2010. A total of 100 patients aged 18 - 40 years with good periodontal health and mesioangular impaction were divided in two treatment groups [50 in each group]. Group-A received prophylactic 4 mg submucosal dexamethasone intraoral injection and Group-B acted as control group. Facial swelling and trismus were assessed at baseline, 2nd and 7th postoperative days. Data was analyzed using SPSS-10. There were 35 [70%] males and 15 [30%] females in group-A and 34 [68%] males and 16 [32%] females in group-B. Surgical time ranged from 30 - 50 minutes [mean = 40.62 +/- 4.886 minutes] for group-A and 33 - 50 minutes [mean = 42.12 +/- 4.543 minutes] for group-B. Administration of dexamethasone had statistically significant effect in reduction of swelling and trismus on second postoperative day [p < 0.05] in group-A. Pre-operative 4 mg submucosal dexamethasone injection was significantly effective in reduction of postoperative swelling and trismus

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare postoperative sensitivity following composite restoration placed in supra gingival class-V cavities using self etch adhesive and total etch adhesive. Study Design: A randomized clinical trial. Place and Duration of Study: Operative Dentistry Department of Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry, Rawalpindi, from July to December 2009

Methodology: A total of 70 patients having class-V supra gingival carious lesions were divided into two groups. Classes-V cavities not exceeding 3 mm were prepared. One treatment group was treated with self etch adhesive [adhe SE one Ivoclar] and the control group was treated with total-etch adhesive [Eco-Etch Ivoclar] after acid etching with 37% phosphoric acid. Light cured composite [Te-Econom Ivoclar] restoration was placed for both groups and evaluated for postoperative sensitivity immediately after restoration, after 24 hours and after one week. Data was recorded on visual analogue scale

Results: Comparison of sensitivity between the two treatment groups on application cold stimulus after 24 hours of restoration showed significant difference; however, no statistically significant difference was observed at baseline, immediately after restoration and at 1 week follow-up with cold stimulus or compressed air application

Conclusion: Less postoperative sensitivity was observed at postoperative 24 hours assessment in restoration placed using SE adhesives compared to TE adhesives. Thus, the use of SE adhesives may be helpful in reducing postoperative sensitivity during 24 hours after restoration placement

ABSTRACT

To carry out clinical comparison of glass ionomer with amalgam in restoring primary dentition of deciduous teeth. Design: An innovative and observational study carried out on pediatric patients. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry, Rawalpindi. Subjects and Two hundred pediatric patients were randomly selected for the study. Each patient received one restoration of the glass ionomer and one of the amalgams regardless of the position occupied by the tooth in the jaw. After one-year review, results indicated that glass ionomer was viable, required less time in restoration, atraumatic and satisfactory alternate filling material to amalgam for restoring primary molars. The glass ionomer is a satisfactory alternate for predictable restoration of primary molar in pediatric patients, especially in compromised teeth with different grades of decay
