ABSTRACT

This essay discusses the book of Elias and Dunning and aims to discuss some contributions to the leisure field of study, emphasizing the issues raised by the authors on the tensions. Our re-reading on their writtings is divided into two aspects: leisure studies on civilization process and the abandonment of the mainstream to understand the tensions as uniquely negative, combined to the lack of attention to the diverse of leisure experience modes. The considerations we have come to feature are: the refusal of the dichotomy work/leisure; the abandonment of tensions understood solely as negative and considering the expansion of leisure investigations beyond their conventional fields, it is necessary also to focus on forms of leisure understood as deviant.
