ABSTRACT

Neonatal ischemic Volkmann's contracture is a rare condition. The initial muscle lesion is believed to start along intra-uterine life and may arise from extrinsic compression of the extremity, by premature rupture of membranes, prolonged labor; oligohydramnios, constricting band, or cord constriction of the extremity. There are other diseases which can mimic this situation, such as aplasia cutis congenita and upper extremity gangrene of the newborn infant. The differential diagnosis must always be done. The authors report a case in which the diagnosis of this syndrome was possible, due to the identification of the nature of the lesion
