ABSTRACT

The authors studied prospectively the corneal curvature of senile cataract patients at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University between January 1993 and June 1995. The corneal curvature of the group 1 patients (103 eyes) with the interrupted suture method in the vertical meridian and horizontal meridian preoperatively = 43.70 + 1.47 D and 44.26+ 1.72 D and postoperatively = 44.58+ 1.89 D and 44.22+ 1.73 D respectively. The corneal curvature of the group 2 patients (71 eyes) with the continuous suture method in the vertical meridian and horizontal meridian preoperatively = 43.27+ 1.75 D and 43.63+ 1.39 D and postoperatively = 43.92+ 1.96 D and 43.61+ 1.77 D respectively. The changes in corneal curvature in the vertical meridian of both groups showed a slight difference but in the horizontal meridian no difference was shown.

ABSTRACT

The measurement of lens thickness by the 3M Digiecho III was carried out in 82 patients with early cataract (41 male, 41 female) from 1st January to 31 December 1988. There was the total of 100 eyes of 46 males and 54 females included in this study. The average lens thickness in patients with early cataract was 4.24 + 0.62 mm, ranging from 5.5 mm to 2.92 mm. It was also found that in comparison with the normal lens thickness it decreased with advanced age.

ABSTRACT

A two-year retrospective study of dacryocystorhinostomy in the Department of Ophthalmology, Siriraj Hospital was conducted, from 1 January 1985 to 31 December 1986. There was a total of 194 cases, 17 male (8.76%), 177 female (91.24%). The youngest was 5 years, the oldest was 86 years, average age was 48.92 years. Age group found with the high incidence 40-49 years 50 cases (25.77%), and 60-69 years, 43 cases (22.16%). Patients over 40 years of age had 144 cases (74.23%), 9 males (6.25%), 135 females (93.75%). Operations to eliminate dacryocystorhinostomy were successful in 191 cases (98.45%), and unsuccessful in 3 cases (1.55%). All 3 cases later had tubing performed.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of optic atrophy due to sequelae of thallotoxicosis in a patient who ingested a rat-poison for suicidal purpose at an estimated dose of 50 mg/kg body weight. The patient’s main symptoms in acute crisis included abdorminal pain and alopecia 14 days after the ingestion. Two months later she developed visual loss. On eye examination, visual acuity finger count was ฝ feet for eyes, optic atrophy and tubular visual field defects was found both eyes. An amount of thallium was found in urine (0.16 microgram/ml), but was negative in serum and pubic hair (21.4 mcg./gm). After prednisolone taken orally 30 mg/day for about 2 months visual acuity improved to 1/60. Both eyes but visual field defect and topic atrophy remain unchanged.

ABSTRACT

Rebleeding or secondary haemorrhage is a serious complication following traumatic hyphema, it occurs with a frequency of between 6-38%. Secondary haemorrhage most often takes place between the 2nd and 6th day after the primary trauma. All patients with traumatic hyphemas seen here from 1st January 1985 to 31st December 1985 were admitted to the hospital on a prospective study protocol. Patients were included consecutively with the exception of those with suspected penetrating ocular injuries 15 cases. The determination of the visual acuity, the extent of the hyphema was categorized as follows: Group 1, small hyphema with blood occupying less than one third of the anterior chamber. Group 2, hyphema occupying one third to one half the anterior chamber. Group 3, hyphema of greater than one half to less than the anterior chamber. Group 4, total hyphema. The treatment regimens included absolute bed rest, patching that eye, no aspirin, no mydriatics or miotics, no prednisolone, no antifibrinolytic agents, tranquilizer; if increase intraocular pressure, Diamox 1 gm. orally; if there were complications such as glaucoma, blood-stained cornea, paracentesis were performed. Of 93 patients with traumatic hyphena, male 84 (90.32%), female 9 (9.68%), age 3-70 years (mean 22.24 yrs.). Rebleeding during hospitalization 3 (3.22%), if included presumed preadmission rebleeds 5, rebleed in this study total 8 (8.60%). Increased intraocular pressure and paracentesis were performed every cases of rebleeding, but the final visual acuity was 6/60 in only case (12.5%).

ABSTRACT

The corneal radius of curvature of 110 emmetropic Thai people from the out-patient section, Department of Ophthlmology was measured by keratometer, male 37, female 73, age 14-58 years, the mean corneal radius of curvature right eye in the vertical meridian = 7.612+0.264 mm., in the horizontal meridian = 7.726+0.257 mm., left eye in the vertical meridian = 7.610+0.269 mm., in the horizontal meridian = 7.733+0.269 mm. These corneal curvature value in Thai people were more curve than that of the European and American eye. This assume that the dimension of the Thai eye are smaller than those of the European and American eye.
