ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This study aimed to elucidate the experiences of post-traumatic growth among spouses of alcoholics. @*Methods@#This study used narrative inquiry. The participants were three middle-aged women who had suffered domestic violence from their husbands, the latter of whom had been diagnosed with alcohol use disorders. In-depth interviews with each participant were conducted twice from June to July 2019. @*Results@#The participants reappraised the intrusive symptoms and negative feelings caused by their husbands' drinking problems and domestic violence, and they deliberately repeated reflective pondering through cognitive and emotional flexibility. The perception of social support from actively explored support resources led them to choose a problem-focused coping strategy. Their views of themselves, interpersonal relationships, and philosophical views that had collapsed due to trauma were reconstructed, thus attaining self-transformation. @*Conclusion@#The subjective perception of social support among spouses of alcoholics was affected by the social and cultural contexts and the means of support. Using an emotional-focused coping strategy to accommodate negative emotional response from trauma as well as helping deal with the emotions themselves are important for driving growth motivation and post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth is the process of reconstructing narratives and integrating them into life stories, thereby giving meaning to life.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the resilience of adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) who are college students, and examine factors contributing to their resilience. METHODS: A total of 459 college students from a university in Incheon, participated in this study. Data were collected between April 6 to 30, 2010 using the Korean version of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST-K), CAGE, Social Support, Self-Esteem, Family Adaptability and Cohesion, and Resilience measurements. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS: Overall, ACOA group showed lower scores of resilience, social support, self-esteem and family adaptability and cohesion compared to non-ACOA group. Resilience among the ACOA group showed significant relationships with self-esteem (r=.53, p<.001), social support (r=.43, p<.001), and family adaptability and cohesion (r=.25, p<.013). Multiple regression analysis showed that 45% of the variance for resilience in the ACOA group was accounted for by age, gender, social support, self-esteem, and religion. CONCLUSION: The results of the study show that self-esteem and social support are important determinants of resilience in ACOA, thus it is recommend that further resilience training programs for ACOA be developed to enhance their social support and self-esteem, and ultimately to increase their resilience.

ABSTRACT

Telomeres are the ends of the linear chromosomes of eukaryotes and consist of tandem GT-rich repeats in telomere sequence i.e. 500-3000 repeats of 5'-TTAGGG-3' in human somatic cells, which are shortened gradually with age. The G-rich overhang of telomere sequence can adopt different intramolecular fold-backs and tetra-stranded DNA structures, in vitro, which inhibit telomerase activity. In this report, DNA binding agents to telomere sequence were studied novel therapeutic possibility to destabilize telomeric DNA sequences. Oligonucleotides containing the guanine repeats in human telomere sequence were synthesized and used for screening potential antitumor drugs. Telomeric DNA sequence was characterized using spectral measurements and CD spectroscopy. CD spectrum indicated that the double-stranded telomeric DNA is in a right-handed conformation. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed for binding behaviors of antitumor compounds with telomeric DNA sequence. Drugs interacted with DNA sequence caused changes in the electrophoretic mobility and band intensity of the gels. Depending on the binding mode of the anticancer drugs, telomeric DNA sequence was differently recognized and the efficiency of cleavage of DNA varies in the bleomycin-treated samples under different conditions. DNA cleavage occurred at about 1% by the increments of 1 mM bleomycin-Fe(III). These results imply that the stability of human telomere sequence is important in conjunction with the cancer treatment and aging process.
