ABSTRACT

Objective@#To confirm the safety of Intra-articular (IA) injection on the ipsilateral adhesive capsulitis (AC) after breast cancer surgery. @*Methods@#Between January 2017 and May 2020, we retrospectively studied 29 patients after breast cancer surgery who underwent IA injection in the glenohumeral joint for AC in aseptic procedure. @*Results@#There were no side effects or complications such as lymphedema or cellulitis in the patients. There was a significant improvement in pain score and range of motion (ROM) at the 1st, 3rd, and 6th months visits compared to the baseline (p<0.05). The presence or absence of axillary lymph node dissection and radiation therapy had no significant difference in improvement of ROM. But, in rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) group, there was a significant difference in improvement of shoulder IR in patients without RCS. @*Conclusion@#IA Injection on the ipsilateral AC after breast cancer surgery was safe and even effective to improve pain and shoulder ROM. Ipsilateral IA injection can be a good treatment for breast cancer surgery patients suffering from AC.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To examine the concordance between the oropharyngeal flora and peristomal wound culture bacteria following percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement. @*Methods@#Cultures of oropharyngeal flora before PEG placement and peristomal wound cultures after PEG placement were examined prospectively in patients who underwent PEG between June 1, 2017, and June 1, 2019, at a local rehabilitation center. Microorganisms in the oropharyngeal flora and peristomal wound culture were identified, and the relationship between them was examined. The risk factors that may increase the PEG infection rate were also examined. @*Results@#The predominant bacterium identified in the oropharyngeal flora and peristomal wounds in patients who required PEG was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The concordance between the oropharyngeal flora and peristomal wound culture bacteria in patients with PEG infections was confirmed. Different oropharyngeal flora was observed in patients with a prolonged hospital stay compared to that of healthy adults. The concordance between the oropharyngeal flora and peristomal wounds was also identified with a high prevalence of gram-negative bacilli. There was no potential risk factor, such as comorbidities or length of hospitalization of patients associated with PEG infections. @*Conclusion@#Because the oropharyngeal flora showed concordance with the bacteria found in the PEG stoma site, management of the oropharyngeal flora before PEG insertion should be considered for patients with dysphagia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common skin condition, but the currently available treatments are not satisfactory. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to assess the efficacy and safety of photopneumatic therapy (PPx), which delivers pneumatic energy and broadband light (400~1,200 nm), for the treatment of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea. METHODS: Twenty two patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea were treated 3~5 times with PPx. Three independent dermatologists evaluated the efficacy of PPx by comparing the photographs taken before and after treatment. Patient self-assessment was also done by interviews. RESULTS: The photographic assessment by the dermatologists of the improvement showed that >50% improvement occurred in 64% (14/22) of the patients. The specific categories of improvement were as follows: poor (75% improvement), 3 patients. Based on the patients' self-assessment, 20 patients (91%) acknowledged an improvement. CONCLUSION: PPx is an effective and safe treatment option for erythematotelangiectatic rosacea.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of DNA microarray data is a rapidly evolving area of bioinformatics, and various types of microarray are emerging as some of the most exciting technologies for use in biological and clinical research. In recent years, microarray technology has been utilized in various applications such as the profiling of mRNAs, assessment of DNA copy number, genotyping, and detection of methylated sequences. However, the analysis of these heterogeneous microarray platform experiments does not need to be performed separately. Rather, these platforms can be co-analyzed in combination, for cross-validation. There are a number of separate laboratory information management systems (LIMS) that individually address some of the needs for each platform. However, to our knowledge there are no unified LIMS systems capable of organizing all of the information regarding multi-platform microarray experiments, while additionally integrating this information with tools to perform the analysis. In order to address these requirements, we developed a web-based LIMS system that provides an integrated framework for storing and analyzing microarray information generated by the various platforms. This system enables an easy integration of modules that transform, analyze and/or visualize multi-platform microarray data.

ABSTRACT

For the past several years, we have built various tools for automatic construction of biopathways to help biological experts, especially in the field of agriculture. We integrated several systems for constructing web applications for analyzing biological pathway information for agricultural species, constructing optimized pathway maps. In addition to building web applications for agricultural pathway information, we developed several stand-alone software tools, which are publicly downloadable under proper license agreements.

ABSTRACT

Thirty two cases of nevus sebaceus were studied by immunohistochemical staining employing three anticytokeratin antibodies(34bE, 34bB, CAM 5.2) and anti-involucrin antibody in order to clarify the biochemical characteristics of the covering epidermis of nevus sebaceus. An attempt was made to compare the expression pattern of these proteins in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus with that in normal skin and in epidermal nevus. Serial sections in all cases were also stained with PAS in attempt to correlate these protein expression with the amount of glycogen in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus. The following results are obtained. 1. The expression of cytokeratin and involucrin in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus was changed as the age of the lesions increased, but we could not identify a uniform pattern according to the age of lesions. 2. Several CAM 5.2 positive cells were found in the basal layer of the epidermis of nevus sebaceus lesion obtained from patients over 10 years of age. 3. The expression of cytokeratin and involucrin did not show any correlation with glycogen content. These results suggest that the covering epidermis of the lesion of nevus sebaceus may not be nevoid proliferation of epidermal nevus.

ABSTRACT

Condyloma acuminatum is a common viral disease which is transmitted by sexual intercourse. We experienced a case of condyloma acuminatum occurring in a patient of systemic lupus erythematosus who has been treated with various immunosuppressive agents for 10 years. This condylorna acuminatum was unusual in that it was very rapidly growing, recurrent and reluctant to various treatrnents. We investigated the type of human papillomavirus by Southern blot hybridization and schieved partial improvement by bleomycin intralesional injection together with 5-FU topical application.

ABSTRACT

A total of 68 primary melanorna cases diagnosed at Seoul National University Hospital for the past 10 years from 1978 to 1987 were included for this clinico pathological study. Among the 31 primary cutaneous melanomss, 19 cases (61.3%) occurred on hands or feet, especially on the plantar surfaces. The average age of patients with acral melanomas was 49.3 years at the tirne of diagnosis and the male to female ratio of 19 cases was 3.8 to 1. The clinical and histopathologic findings showed that most ecral melanomas, if not all, were the acral lentiginous type. A high incidence of metastasis (73.7%) was recognized in acral melanomas.

ABSTRACT

A histopathological study of erythema nodosum-like lesions in Behcet's disease was performed on 55 patients with incomplete and suspect types of Behcet's disease. Relatively common characteristics in histopathology of erythema nodosum-like lesions could be found in the patients with incomplete type of Behcet's disease. The histopathologic findings of erythema nodosum-like lesions in 21 patients with incomplete type of Behcet's disease were as follows : l. A moderate lymphocytic infiltration was found around the blood vessels and the sweat glands in the dermis. In the subcutaneous tissue, besides lymphohistiocytic infiltration, neutrophils were present in significant number in 9 cases (42.9%) 2. Vasculitis of small vessels was found within the periphery of fat lobules in 7 cases (81.0%), Five cases (23.8%) also showed thrombophlebitis. Seven cases (33.3%) showed histiocytic granuloma formation within the fat lobules. Microabscess formation in the subcutaneous tissue was seen in 5 cases (23.8 %), but it was not certain whether this was the charateristic feature.
