ABSTRACT

Of the recent trends in ENT, the use of ambulatory surgery for adenotonsillectomy is gaining in popularity and acceptability. An audit analysis of this procedure, on the basis of no overnight hospital stay, is re ported from King Fahad Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar [KFHU], Saudi Arabia. Patients who had their surgery performed and were discharged from the hospital on the same day, had no more complications than those who were conventionally hospitalised before and after surgery. Reactionary haemorrhage was not recorded in any of the 52 patients who were scheduled for same-day procedure and discharge. Only three patients [6%] needed provision for overnight hospital stay after the operation, because of fever in one patient, severe dysphagia in another, and the finding of a blood clot in the tonsillar fossae of the third patient. Suggestions are made for the selection of patients for day-case surgery

ABSTRACT

The quality of service provided to the dizzy patients who attend the ENT clinic at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, is reviewed and the medical records critically analysed. Out of a clinic population of 16,000 patients [ENT clinic attendance for two years, 1988-1989], 110 complained of dizziness [0.7%]. This Internal Audit suggests that the best way to deal with patients complaining of dizziness is to establish a multidisciplinary clinic with well structured procedural protocol

ABSTRACT

We present the morphological features and clinical progression of lipoid proteinosis observed in six patients from a Saudi family. The index case presented with hoarseness and characteristic skin lesions. Some of the patients had photosensitivity with milia and hypertrichosis. The diagnosis of lipoid proteinosis was confirmed by histopathology and by the finding of normal blood porphyrin levels. The condition is inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder, and consanguinity was an important factor. The rarity of this condition and the common occurrence of close-relative intermarriages in Saudi Arabia prompted this report, which we believe is the first and largest family with lipoid proteinosis possessing an established Arabian ancestry

ABSTRACT

From 1982 to 1988, the neonatal mortality rate in King Fahd Hospital of the University in AI-Khobar [KFHU] for all infants and for the very low birthweight babies dropped from 13 to 7 and from 920 to 130 per 1000 live births respectively. The credit goes to the entire staff of the neonatal intensive care unit of KFHU. The laryngologist plays an important role in the management of a variety of neonatal airway problems. These problems, the practical procedures that are followed and the importance of the close collaboration between the neonatologist and the laryngologist are highlighted
