ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of placement of medicated packing with solcoseryl dental adhesive paste in the extraction socket as a prophylactic measure to prevent alveolar osteitis. One hundred and ten patients underwent surgical extraction for their impacted lower third molars. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; In the first group [n=56], the extraction socket was packed to the crest of the alveolar ridge with a 3cm length filament gauze impregnated solcoseryl dental adhesive paste, while in the second [control] group [n=54], no packing was placed. The alveolar osteitis was seen in 19% [21 out of 110]. 11% developed alveolar osteitis in packed sockets and 28% in non-packed. It was concluded that immediate packing of extraction sockets with solcoseryl containing pack is beneficial in preventing alveolar osteitis

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to identify the frequency, clinical symptoms and risk-factors of adenomyosis in hysterectomy specimens in a sample of Jordanian women. A total of 138 hysterectomy specimen pathology reports were reviewed at Queen Alia Military Hospital and Prince Hashem Bin Al-Hussein Hospital during the period between January 2007 to December 2008. The patients were divided according to the histological diagnosis and this was related to demographic and clinical data collected from the records of these women. Adenomyosis was identified in 51 women [37% of cases]. Forty-eight of these women [94%] were in their forties [P>0.05], while 49 [96%] were multiparas [P<0.05]. Dysmenorrhoea, chronic pelvic pain and dyspareunia were statistically significant while menorrhagia wasn't. The histological diagnosis of fibroid uterus, in addition to adenomyosis was made in 22 women [P>0.05]. The mean age at hysterectomy was 47.3 years in women with adenomyosis and 51.4 years in women without the condition [P<0.05]. In the adenomyosis group, parity proved to have statistical significance while age, body mass index and smoking status weren't. Adenomyosis is a common finding in hysterectomy specimens. It is more common in multiparous women with dysmenorrhoea, chronic pelvic pain and dyspareunia

ABSTRACT

To determine the frequency of neural tube defects among patients who were delivered at Prince Rashid Bin Al-Hassan Military Hospital and to discuss possible ways to reduce them. This descriptive review study of 11,852 medical records was conducted over a period of two years between the 1[st] of August 2005 and end of July 2007 at Prince Rashid Bin-Al-Hassan Military Hospital in Irbid-Jordan. During the study period, there were 17 cases of neural tube defects [1.4/1000 births], of these there were five cases of spina bifida [0.42/1000 births], three cases of encephalocele [0.25/1000 births], and nine cases of anencephaly [0.76/1000 births]. The overall female to male ratio was 1: 0.89. The most common neural tube defect was anencephaly [52.9%], and the commonest site of spina bifida was the lumbosacral region in 2/5 [40%]. One case of encephalocele was associated with malformations while four cases [80%] of spina bifida were associated with other malformations. The frequency of neural tube defects is high and probably on the decreasing in Jordan. We may be able to reduce such defects by recommending women of childbearing age to take daily Folic acid [400mcg] for at least three months before they become pregnant and throughout the first trimester
