ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of percutaneous needle aspiration (PNA) and percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) in the management of hepatic abscess. Methods: The current study includes prospective randomized comparative study of 60 patients admitted in emergency and indoor department at tertiary health care centre, randomized into two groups- Percutaneous needle aspiration (PNA) & Pigtail catheter drainage (PCD). The effectiveness of hepatic abscess is based early recovery period, duration of hospital stay, and clinical improvement status. Results: The recovery rate was significantly improved in catheter drainage group. The analysis showed that outcomes in patients treated with PCD were superior to those in patients treated with PNA in terms of early recovery, clinical improvement and days to achieve a 50% reduction in abscess cavity size. Conclusion: Both PNA and PCD are safe methods of draining hepatic abscesses. However, PCD is more effective than PNA because it facilitates a higher success rate, reduces the time required to achieve clinical relief and supports a 50% reduction in abscess cavity size. However, among successfully treated patients, the outcomes of PNA are comparable with those of PCD.

ABSTRACT

It is extremely rare to find a case of primary sinonasal mucosal melanoma, which is more aggressive and have poorer outcome than its cutaneous counterpart. This tumour is refractory to the treatment which includes wide surgical excision with or without adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy. We are reporting a case of 60 year old female who presented with right sided nasal mass and facial deformity, in whom the diagnosis of mucosal melanoma was made on histopathological examination and confirmed by immunohistochemistry

ABSTRACT

From the ethyl acetate extract of the plant Pygmaeopremna herbacea Roxb. a tetrahydroxy flavone was isolated which on the basis of spectral studies was characterized as 5,6,7,4′- tetrahydroxy flavone (Scutellarein).

ABSTRACT

This study endeavours to evaluate the need for sedation in fibreoptic bronchoscopy and response of the patients when sedation is not used. One hundred and five patients divided into three groups of 35 patients each, received buprenorphine [0.3 mg], diazepam [10 mg] and normal saline [0.5 ml] respectively alongwith atropine [0.6 mg] in each case. The study emphasizes that sympathetic explanation of the details of the procedure to the patients, administration of careful topical anaesthesia and avoidance of sedation makes the procedure acceptable, safe, comfortable with less complications and the need for admitting the patients to the ward is by [and] large avoided

ABSTRACT

Twenty male albino rats, weighing 150 +/- 10 gm were divided into experimental and control groups of equal number. Sodium pentobarbitone [30 mg/kg body weight] was injected intraperitoneally to produce general anaesthesia in all the rats. Heads of the test rats were exposed to gamma irradiation [558.6 rads in a single dose]. Tissues from the precental gyrus of the cerebrum of all the animals were taken out immediately and processed partly for neurohistological stains and partly for biochemical estimations. Microscopic examination revealed hydropic degeneration of the nerve cells. Biochemical estimation established increased sodium level in the nervous tissue without affecting potassium concentration. Alteration in sodium was considered to be an important criterion in acute damage of nervous tissue and also responsible for hydropic degeneration due to irradiation
