ABSTRACT

Histologic evaluation of apoptotic index and immunohistochemical analysis of P-53 gene protein were performed in a group of 21 cases of liver cell dysplasia [large cells with hypochromasia, large cells with hyperchromasia, small liver cell dysplasia, and regenerating or paraplastic liver cells]. Streptavidin biotin peroxidase technique with monoclonal antibody D0-7 and DAB-fast green counter stain was used. The mean apoptotic rate was 1.0-4.8% and the positive immunoreactivity for P-53 was 66.7% of cases. There was a significant correlation between apoptotic rate and immunoreactivity of P-53 protein indicated that dysplastic cells were suggested to represent putative precursors in hepatic carcinogenic pathway. This study concluded also that P-53 gene protein played a significant role in the regulation of apoptosis in preneoplastic liver lesions

ABSTRACT

Endometrial biopsies from 40 post menopausal females suffering from vaginal bleeding were collected, formalin fixed paraffin embedded, sectioned and stained by routine haematoxylin and eosin stains, PAS, reticulin and Van-Geison's stain. Basic clinical data were collected. Cases were classified as endometrial hyperplasia [29], carcinoma [6] while five cases had shown criteria common to both atypical hyperplasia and carcinoma. PAS stain revealed PAS positive intracytoplasmic staining in cases of hyperplasia while carcinoma cases were negative. Van -Geison stain showed prominent collagen around mailgnant glands. The use of reticulin stain had ben used to differentiate between undifferentiated carcinoma and stromal sarcoma. The latter showed abundant reticulin fibres around individual cells and small cell groups

ABSTRACT

Fifty patients with superficial lymphadenopathy were studied cytologically and histopatho logically. Pre-operative fine needle aspiration cytology [FNAC] specimens, core cutting needle biopsies and intraoperative imprint cytology were compared to histopathological results of histological material obtained by open surgical biopsy. In malignant lymphomas, FNAC yielded 80.9% correct diagnosis in comparison to the histopathological diagnosis, while imprint cytology and tru-cut needle biopsy yielded 95.2% and 47.6% respectively. In benign lesions of lymph nodes FNAC results were 82.35% correct diagnosis while the imprint cytology and tru-cut needle biopsy results were 88.2% and 58.8% respectively. On the other hand, metastatic lymph nodes were 100% correct diagnosis for both FNAC and imprint cytology method while it was 75% correct diagnosis using the tru-cut needle biopsy

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes that can occur in skeletal muscle injected with a local anesthetic and steroid combination. The injection procedure was performed into the right gastrocnemius muscle of albino rats. The rats were divided into six groups: Group 1 [received 1 mg procaine], group 2 [received 1 mg procaine and 0.1mg Kenacort], group 3 [received 0.5 mg bupivacaine], group 4 [received 0.5 mg bupivacaine and 0.1 mg Kenacort], group 5 [received 0.1 mg Kenacort], group 6 [received 0.9% saline, as a control]. The study strongly suggested that bupivacaine has the potential to be more toxic to skeletal muscle than procaine. In addition, it documented that the addition of steroid to the local anesthetic intensifies its myotoxicity; a situation of potential clinical importance
