Multiplicación en sistemas de inmersión temporal y enraizamiento ex vitro de ocumo blanco (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L) Schott) / Multiplication in temporary immersion systems and ex vitro rooting of white cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L) Schott)

El ocumo (Xanthosoma sagittifollium (L.) Schott) es una Arácea cultivada en países tropicales debido al valor nutritivo de sus cormos. La principal limitante para su cultivo es la carencia de semilla de calidad, por esta razón se planteó evaluar la multiplicación de brotes de ocumo blanco en sistemas de inmersión temporal, y el enraizamiento ex vitro de los mismos, para lo cual se estudió el tiempo y la frecuencia de inmersión, y la densidad de explantes sobre la proliferación de los brotes. Asimismo, el efecto del ácido indolacético (AIA) y ácido indolbutírico (AIB) sobre el enraizamiento ex vitro de brotes. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, la mayor eficiencia en la proliferación de brotes se obtuvo utilizando el sistema de inmersión temporal del tipo RITA®, con una frecuencia y tiempo de inmersión de 6 veces/día y 5 min, respectivamente, y una densidad de 9 explantes/RITA®. En el enraizamiento ex vitro se determinó que bajo las condiciones de cultivo empleadas no es necesario el uso de auxinas. Se concluye que es posible la multiplicación eficiente de ocumo blanco en sistemas de inmersión temporal, y realizar el enraizamiento ex vitro sin el uso de auxinas.

The white cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifollium (L.) Schott), is an Arácea cultivated in tropical countries, due to the nutritional value of its corms. The main limiting factor for cultivation is the lack of healthy seed, by this reason be outlined to evaluate the multiplication of shoots of white cocoyam in temporary immersion systems and the ex vitro rooting of the same. For that which, itself study, the time and frequency of immersion and the density of explants on the proliferation of the shoots. As well as, the effect of the indole acetic acid (IAA) and indole butyric acid (IBA) on ex vitro rooting the shoots was studied. According to the results obtained, the greater efficiency in the proliferation of shoots was obtained utilizing the temporary immersion system of the type RITA®, with a frequency and time of immersion of 6 times/day and 5 min, respectively and a density of 9 explantes/RITA®. In the ex vitro rooting was determined that under the conditions of employed cultivation is not necessary the use of auxins. It is concluded that is possible the efficient multiplication of white cocoyam in temporary immersion systems and to carry out the ex vitro rooting without the use of auxins.

Fijador con soporte y modificación de la valva de Balfour

Se describe y muestra un instrumento que fija la valva de Balfour en el hemiabdomen superior para su uso en múltiples operaciones, constituido por un fijador, un soporte y la modificación realizada a la valva de Balfour, y tiene como ventajas la garantía de una mejor realización de la técnica quirúrgica, la mejoría del campo operatorio y la eliminación de un ayudante en la mesa de operaciones. Este separador fue ideado para utilizarse en el hemiabdomen superior, no obstante puede emplearse en cualquier parte del abdomen. La propuesta ha sido utilizada en 30 pacientes y fue satisfactorio su empleo en todos éstos y aceptados por todos los cirujanos. Se presentó una complicación representada por un cuadro de neuritis intercostal en el paciente operado de neoplasia de curvatura esplénica del colon. Consideramos que por las ventajas que presenta el instrumento debe ser ampliado a otras unidades hospitalarias de Cuba.

A surgical implement which fixes Balfour's valva to the upper hemiabdomen is described and shown for its using in other surgery. It is made up of a fixator, a bracket and the modification of Balfour's valva and it exhibits advantages such as: a better guaranteed surgical technique, improvement of surgical field and elimination of one assistant at surgery. This separator was devised to be used in the upper hemiabdomen but it may be employed in other abdomen sections. The proposed implement has been used in 30 patients with satisfactory outcome and accepted by all surgeons. A complication related to intercostal neuritis affected a patient who was operated from colon splenial curvature neoplasm. We consider that the advantages of this implement allows it to be extended to other hospitals in the country.

Evaluación de 47 casos de retinoblastoma (1982-1986) / Evaluation of 47 cases of retinoblastoma (1982-1986)

We have reviewed medical records of 47 patients of retinoblastoma treated between 1982-1986 in our section of retinoblastoma of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hospital Universitario de Caracas, this section is constituted by Services of ophalmology, pediatrics radiotherapy and heamatology and was founded in 1979 by one of us(A, B). The age most affected was between 2-3 years (49.00%). We did not found difference between sexes. 57.40%had unilateral form and 42.60%bilateral. Two patients (4.25%) had family history of retinoblastoma. The most important symptoms were leucocoria (76.60%) and proptosis (10.60%). Almost half (47.00%) came in advanced state. The general mortality followed in 24 months was 77%
