ABSTRACT

Introducción: en Venezuela, tanto la planta Phyllanthus niruri L. como Azadirachta indica A. Juss. se emplean empíricamente para el tratamiento de diabetes mellitus. Se consideró importante comprobar su utilidad potencial ante una situación de hiperglicemia aguda y, dados algunos efectos adversos descritos para A. indica, valorar posibles efectos sinérgicos con P. niruri, que permitan disminuir su dosis y aprovechar su acción farmacológica terapéutica. Objetivos: valorar el efecto hipoglicemiante o antihiperglicemiante agudo de la planta entera P. niruri, y de su combinación con hojas de A. indica en ratas normales. Métodos: se prepararon extractos acuosos de hojas de A. indica y planta entera de P. niruri, se pesaron 70 g del material vegetal que se colocaron en 200 mL de agua a 55-60 ºC. Se conformaron 3 tratamientos: 2 correspondientes a cada extracto y un tercero preparado por la combinación de iguales volúmenes de los primeros. A cada extracto y a su combinación le fue medido el contenido de glucosa, para preparar soluciones glucosadas de 13,77, 21,54 y 18,82 mmol/L, controles, respectivamente, de los tratamientos con A. indica, P. niruri y su combinación; se administraron vía oral a la dosis de 5 mL/300 g, se hizo también una comparación antes-después. La glicemia se medió antes de la administración del tratamiento y 2 h después. Resultados: en la comparación con su control de solución glucosada, solo la combinación de los extractos disminuyó significativamente la glicemia. En la comparación antes-después todos los tratamientos disminuyeron de modo significativo la glicemia; en los controles de solución glucosada no se observó variación significativa de la glicemia. Conclusiones: se demostró el efecto hipoglicemiante de la planta entera de P. niruri, que valida su uso en la medicina tradicional venezolana, y se sugiere un efecto sinérgico con hojas de A. indica.


Introduction: both Phyllanthus niruri L. and Azadirachta indica A. Juss. are used in Venezuela on an empirical basis for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It was considered important to verify the potential usefulness to face acute hyperglicemic condition; and taken into account some adverse effects of A. indica, to value possible synergic effects with P. niruri that allow reducing the dose and taking advantage of its therapeutic pharmacological action. Objectives: to assess the acute hypoglycemic or anti-hyperglycemic effect. Methods: aqueous extracts from A. indica leaves and the P. niruri plant were prepared first, then 70 g of vegetal material were weighted and placed into 200 mL of water at 55-60 ºC. Three courses of treatment were organized; two included each extract and the third based on the combination of equal portions of them. Each extract and the combination were measured their content of glycose in order to prepare glycoside solutions of 13.77, 21.54 and 18.82 mmol/L, which acted as controls of the therapies with A. indica, P. niruri and their combination. They were orally administered at a dose of 5 mL/300 g and compared before and after the administration. Likewise, glycemia was measured before and 2 hours after treatment. Results: in the comparison with its glycoside solution control, only the combination of extracts significantly reduced glycemia. As to the comparison before and after the administration, all the treatments managed to decrease in a significant way glycemia; however, in glycoside solution controls, there was not remarkable variation of glycemia. Conclusions: there was proved the hypoglyceemic effect of the whole P. niruri plant, leading to its validation as a Venezuelan traditional medicinal plant and the synergic effect that may be achieved with A, indica leaves was put forward.

ABSTRACT

Se presenta el uso de una cámara anestésica de bajo costo, construida en vidrio, de fácil manejo y limpieza, como recurso didáctico, para explicar, en ratones de laboratorio, los fundamentos de la anestesia general inhalatoria a estudiantes de medicina veterinaria. La cámara permite adecuada dosificación del anestésico, garantiza la vida de los animales y disminuye la exposición de profesores y estudiantes a los gases anestésicos. Así, se pueden abordar didácticamente los aspectos básicos de la anestesia general inhalada, como el efecto de la concentración del anestésico en el aire inspirado y solubilidad.


A low-cost glass-assembled and easy to handle anesthetic chamber is presented, easy handling and cleaning, as a didactic manner to explain, by using mice, the basis of the inhaled general anesthesia to veterinary medicine students. The chamber, allows adequate dose administration of anesthetic, preserves life of animals and decreases exposure of teachers and students to anesthetics gases. Thus, it’s possible to explain in a didactic fashion the basic concepts of inhaled anesthesia, such as anesthetic concentration and solubility.
