ABSTRACT

Background Induced abortion and unplanned pregnancy are two closely related public health problems. Most induced abortions are the result of unplanned pregnancies, although it is recognized that there are different factors correlated with both phenomena. Objectives To determine the prevalence of induced abortion and unplanned pregnancy, and to identify their associated factors in women between 10 and 44 years of age, in the localities of Usme, Ciudad Bolivar and Santa Fe, Bogotá. Methods Cross-sectional study, with participation of 2,101 women, selected through a probabilistic sampling. Prevalences were calculated and a univariate and multiple logistic analysis was performed in Stata 6.0. In the qualitative part 13 women were interviewed. Preliminary and emergent categories were identified and relationships and explanations were established. Socio-demographic variables, gynecological-obstetric variables, knowledge and use of family planning methods (FPM), access to and use of health services and media consumption were investigated. Results Prevalence of abortion was 4.15% and 65.96% of unplanned pregnancy. Abortion was correlated with age, income, marital status, age and use of PFP at first intercourse and knowledge of PFP before first intercourse. Unintended pregnancy was associated with age, marital status, knowledge of ligation, knowledge of partially effective PFP, receiving information about PFP, offer of device and injection, age and use of PFP at first intercourse. Conclusions Sociodemographic factors, knowledge and use of PFP are correlated with the two events studied.
