ABSTRACT

Background: Clinical studies, reliable geospatial data, and blood bank management all require an understanding of blood group trends. The prevalence of ABO in the blood group varies from one community to another. Every transfusion center/hematology lab is required to keep a statistical record of the blood group among their population, staff, and students. Aim and Objectives: Determining ABO and Rh blood group and study the pattern of these blood groups with an estimation of gene frequencies among first phase medical students of GMC Jammu. Materials and Methods: 250 medical students were recruited for the study. The finger-prick technique was done to obtain blood. On clean glass slides, a drop of monoclonal anti-A, B, and D was added to a drop of red blood cell suspension made from finger-prick blood and normal saline and thoroughly mixed. The agglutination results were subsequently recorded. Percentages were used to represent the data. Results: ABO blood group prevalent in this study was B, which accounted for 39.6% of all cases (36.8% B+ and 2.8% B-) followed by O with 34% (33.2% O+ and 0.8% O-), A with 21.2% (20% A+ and 1.2% A-), and AB with 5.2% (5.2% AB+ and 0% AB-). Among Rh group 95.2% were positive whereas 4.8% were found to be negative. The gene frequency for IA (p) - 0.1599, for IB (q) - 0.2571, and IO (r) - 0.5830. Conclusion: The B blood group is more ubiquitous than the others, with the AB blood group being the least common. Rh-positive is more common than Rh-negative blood types. Gender had no effect on the ABO and Rh blood groups.

ABSTRACT

Background: Neonatal and maternal mortality are the major concerns in the country mainly due to the “three delays” in seeking, reaching, and obtaining appropriate care. Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPACR) is one of the most important tools to assess these delays. BPACR is the process of planning for normal birth and anticipating the actions needed in case of an emergency. The current study was undertaken to assess the status of BPACR among pregnant women in rural area of Kharsiya block in Raigarh district.Methods: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 110 pregnant women in rural area of Kharsiya during January-June 2017. All the pregnant females were interviewed using a pretested and structured questionnaire. Knowledge about danger signs, planning for transport, place and delivery by skilled birth attendant, financial management were assessed. BPACR index was also calculated.Results: The BPACR index was found to be very low (27.79%). About 73.65% women identified a skilled birth attendant for delivery but, only 10% women saved money and only 2.7% women had identified a blood donor for emergency. Nearly 74.54% women had no knowledge about danger or warning signs during pregnancy while 89.09% were unaware of complications during labour and 97.27% women did not know about puerperal complications.Conclusions: BPACR index in this rural area was very low. Vast majority of women were not knowledgeable about birth preparedness and complication readiness.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of ovarian follicular activity. There is limited and conflicting evidence for an association between lung function and menopause. The purpose of this study is to evaluate Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Digital Spirometer was used to measure PFTs in premenopausal (n = 49) and postmenopausal (n = 46) women. RESULTS: Significant decline in many PFT parameters was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Menopausal status is associated with low lung function.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hypothyroidism was found to be associated with metabolic syndrome, with females being more at risk than males. The potential contributory role of the metabolic syndrome to cardiovascular risk and its scope in subjects with hypothyroidism is the focus of this study.Methods: Forty untreated hypothyroid women and forty normal, healthy subjects were recruited for the study. Fasting blood samples were collected for lipid profile, glucose and insulin level estimation.Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressures in hypothyroidism patients were significantly higher than values in controls. Similarly, BMI, waist circumference was higher among hypothyroidism subjects. Again, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol levels were higher in patients with hypothyroidism in comparison to controls, while HDL- cholesterol, insulin, HOMA-IR were higher among controls. Conclusion: Hypothyroidism is significantly associated with metabolic syndrome and its components like dysglycemia, hypertension and dyslipidemia and obesity. Increased cardiovascular and other risk factor among hypothyroidism patients need to be addressed by further studies.

ABSTRACT

Adansonia digitata L. (Malvaceae) is commonly known as baobab tree native to Africa. Baobab is a multi-purpose tree which offers protection and provides food, clothing and medicine as well as raw material for many useful items. The fruit pulp, seeds, leaves, flowers, roots, and bark of baobab are edible and they have been studied by scientists for their useful properties. The fruit pulp have very high vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, carbohydrates, fibers, potassium, proteins and lipids content, which can be used in seasoning as an appetizer and also make juices. Seeds contain appreciable quantities of phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, sodium, iron, manganese, whereas they have high levels of lysine, thiamine, calcium and iron. Baobab has numerous biological properties including antimicrobial, anti-malarial, diarrhoea, anaemia, asthma, antiviral, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities amongst others. Phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of flavonoids, phytosterols, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The review summarizes the information on various aspects of traditional information, taxonomic description, medicinal properties and importantly nutritional value.
