ABSTRACT

Salinity is one of the most critical environmental parameters regarding fish physiology, modifying food intake and growth performance in many fish species. The present study has investigated the effects of different salinity levels on growth performance, feeding and survival of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer juveniles. Asian seabass juveniles were reared at 0 (T1), 5 (T2), 22 (T3), 36 (T4), and 42 (T5) ppt salinity. Approximately eight hundred thirty fish individuals with an average weight of 1.24±0.52 g were randomly distributed (166 fish/Tank) in 5 concrete tanks (each tank 30×6×4 ft, volume 19,122 L) for forty days. Juveniles were initially fed 42% crude protein-containing diets at a rate of 6% of their body weight per day. The results showed that salinity level had a significant effect on the weight gain (WG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), total biomass and health indices (p<0.05). The highest WG (39.11±1.49 g), ADWG (1.00±0.12 g), SGR (8.74±0.03% d-1) and lowest FCR (0.96±0.20) were observed with T3 treatment, which was significantly higher compared to other treatment groups (p<0.05). Among the health indices, the highest hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index were found with T3 treatment, significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). No significant differences were found among the treatments in terms of survival rate (p>0.05), but the maximum survival rate (98.89±0.0%) was observed in the T3 and T2 treatments. The maximum level of crude proteins (19.99±1.4%) was found in the whole-body biochemical composition of Asian seabass juveniles in the T3 treatment group. The second-order polynomial regression showed that 20 ppt salinity is optimum for the best growth of Asian seabass. Thus, the present study recommends 20 to 36 ppt salinity for the commercial farming of Asian seabass under a closed aquaculture system.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study examines the correlations between fifteen morphometric and ten meristic characters and total length (TL) of males, females, and combined sexes of Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) collected from Karachi fish harbor, West Wharf of Karachi Coast. Statistical analyses of linear regression relationships show mostly strong correlations (r0.70; p 0.05) between total length (TL) and most morphometric characters in males, females, and combined sexes, except the height of pectoral-fin (PFH), and pelvic-fin base length (PelFL); whereas, meristic characters were found to be constant and indicate weak or negative type correlations (r0.50; p>0.05) with total length (TL). Hence, according to our present results, there is a direct relationship between the total length of fish and all morphometric characters, which were found to be the best indicators of positive allometric pattern growth in fish. Moreover, analysis of the 2-sample t-test revealed (t-test; p>0.05) that no sexual dimorphism was reported in Alepes vari. Thus, our present study could be valuable in systematic classification, sexual dimorphism, and management of this species on the Karachi coast.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: In elasmobranch fishes, variations in gross structural organization of cerebellum has been extensively explored. The basic histological features of cerebellum although conserved in the group but the comparative account on subtle cellular variations is largely underestimated. The present study aims to explore the histological and cellular variations in different layers of cerebellar cortex of the representative elasmobranchs' species belonging to different habitat. Our findings showed that the histological architecture of cerebellar granular layer between the examined species varies noticeably. By and large increase cellular density were observed in all the layers of cerebellum in the representative species of shark compared to ray. The findings were then compared and discussed with reference to their habitat and behavior.

ABSTRACT

Background: FEM is a mathematical method in which the shape of complex geometric objects and their physical properties are computer-constructed. Physical interactions of the various components of the model can then be calculated in terms of stress and strain, detailed information which is difficult to obtain by any other experimental or analytical means due to the interaction of anatomical structures with the surrounding tissue.. The aim is to Comparison of biomechanical differences by FEM between labial and lingual orthodontic mechanotherapy involved in canine retraction. Material & Methods: ANSYS software was preferred over others for the analysis. As ANSYS can import computer assisted designing (CAD) data and also enables to build geometry , In the current study, we have shown the simulated individual (sequential) canine retraction using the sliding(friction method) mechanics by an elastic component. Sliding mechanics was preferred over the closing loop mechanics (frictionless method). Results: Stress in the PDL and Alveolar bone were calculated and depicted. Conclusion: On retraction, the high stress was produced with the Labial system in the PDL and alveolar bone that gradually reduced on force degradation. On combined force application slight increase in stress was noticed.

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to evaluate the strength of association of raised plasma homocysteine concentration as a risk factor for coronary heart disease independent of conventional risk factor. It was a case control study conducted at Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore. A total of 210 subjects aged 25 to 60 years comprising of 105 newly admitted patients of CHD as cases and 105 age and sex matched healthy individuals with no history of CHD as control were recruited for the study. Fasting blood samples were obtained from cases and controls. Plasma homocysteine was analyzed by fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) method on automated immunoassay analyzer (Abbott IMX). Total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol were analyzed using calorimetric kit methods. The concentration of LDL cholesterol was calculated using Friedewald formula. The patients were also assessed for traditional risk factors such as age, sex, family history of CVD, hypertension, smoking and physical activity, and were compared with control subjects. The collected data was entered in SPSS version 24 for analysis and interpretation. The mean age in controls and experimental groups were 43.00± 8.42 years and 44.72± 8.59 years with statistically same distribution (p- value= 0.144). The mean plasma homocysteine for cases was 22.33± 9.22 µmol/L where as it was 12.59±3.73 µmol/L in control group. Highly significant difference was seen between the mean plasma level of homocysteine in cases and controls (p˂0.001).Simple logistic regression indicates a strong association of coronary heart disease with hyperhomocysteinemia (OR 7.45), which remained significantly associated with coronary heart disease by multivariate logistic regression (OR 7.10, 95%C1 3.12-12.83, p=0.000). The present study concludes that elevated levels of Plasma homocysteine is an independent risk factor [...].

O presente estudo conclui [...].

ABSTRACT

There is a paucity of research conducted on microbial prevalence in pheasants. The microbiota of captive birds has zoonotic significance and must be characterize. Present study is therefore planned to assess the microbiota from oral, fecal and gut content of captive avian species. It will be helpful in characterization of harmful microbes. Different samples taken from oral, gut and feces of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), green pheasants (Phasianus versicolor), golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and silver pheasant (Lophura nycthemera). Samples were collected, diluted, and inoculated onto different agar plates (MacConkey, SS agar, MSA and nutrient agar) for cultivation of bacterial species. Colonies of E.coli, Staphylococcus spp. Brachyspira spp. and Campylobacter spp were observed based on colony morphology. Colony forming unit showed E. coli as frequently found bacteria in fecal, oral and gut contents of all the above pheasants. The overall significance difference was found among bacterial species of golden pheasants, green pheasant, ring-necked pheasant, and silver pheasants. It was concluded that E.coli is predominant isolated from heathy pheasants followed by Campylobacter, Staphylococcus and Brachyspira.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study was designed to evaluate the strength of association of raised plasma homocysteine concentration as a risk factor for coronary heart disease independent of conventional risk factor. Highly significant difference was seen between the mean plasma level of homocysteine in cases and controls (p0.001).Simple logistic regression indicates a strong association of coronary heart disease with hyperhomocysteinemia (OR 7.45), which remained significantly associated with coronary heart disease by multivariate logistic regression (OR 7.10, 95%C1 3.12-12.83, p=0.000). The present study concludes that elevated levels of Plasma homocysteine is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease independent of conventional risk factors and can be used as an indicator for predicting the future possibility for the onset of CVD.

ABSTRACT

Abstract There is a paucity of research conducted on microbial prevalence in pheasants.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Hedera nepalensis (H. nepalensis) , belonging to the family Araliaceae, is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat stomach problems. The current study investigated the gastroprotective potential and the mechanism of action of H. nepalensis in diclofenac-and ethanol-induced ulcer models. Anti-oxidant and lipid peroxidation inhibitory prospects of H. nepalensis were checked out by free radical scavenging assay and UV spectrophotometer respectively. Effect of H. nepalensis on the pH, gastric total acidity of gastric juice and protective effects of H. nepalensis against ulcer models have been examined. Histopathological studies have been carried out. The aqueous methanol extract of H. nepalensis (100 µg/mL) showed anti-oxidant (83.55%) and lipid peroxidation inhibitory (70.88%) potential at 1000 µg/mL; the extract had no buffer potential. The extract (400 mg/kg) significantly (81.12% and 63.46%) showed gastroprotective effect in diclofenac and ethanol-induced rat ulcer models respectively. Histopathological studies confirmed the biochemical findings. FTIR analysis showed the presence of carboxylic acid, alkanes, conjugated alkanes, aldehydes and alkyl-aryl ethers. Gallic acid, M-coumaric acid and quercetin were found by HPLC analysis. H. nepalensis exhibited significant protection against diclofenac and ethanol induced gastric damage by anti-oxidant and lipid peroxidation suppression effects suggesting potential broad utility in treatment of diseases characterized with gastric damage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To validate the Hindi translation of Survey of well-being of young children (SWYC), a screening questionnaire to detect developmental delay and emotional-behavior problems by primary caregivers in Indian children. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was done at the child development clinic of our private-sector tertiary care hospital. 180 children of either sex, 60 each in age group of 9, 18 and 24 months were enrolled in the study (30 high-risk and 30 low-risk in each group). Hindi translated version of SWYC age-specific questionnaire was administered to the parents, followed by a standardized development assessment by using the Bayley Scale of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID III). Results: SWYC Milestone score and Emotional/behavior scores showed a statistically significant correlation with BSID III (P<0.001). Milestone score’s overall sensitivity in detecting developmental delay was 94.4% and specificity was 93.4%. The sensitivity was best for the 24-month (100%) and specificity was best for 18-month questionnaire (96.7%). Behavioral score’s overall sensitivity was 68.4% and specificity 92.3%. The best sensitivity was for 18-month questionnaire (72%), and specificity for 24- month questionnaire (100%). SWYC had better sensitivity for detecting developmental delay in high-risk group (95.4%), and higher specificity in low risk group (95.5%). Conclusion: SWYC has strong test characteristics for detecting milestone delay and emotional/behavior problems in Indian children.

ABSTRACT

Clinical presentation of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with classic translocation is similar to those with variant translocations. However, the disease course, outcome and prognosis differsto a large extent. Therefore, it is important to identify and report variant cytogenetic findings. The case is being reported to improve awareness regarding such cases. Case Presentation: Herein we present a case study of 55-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain and fever. The initial complete blood count showed hyperleukocytosis with features suggestive of chronic myeloproliferative leukemia (CML). Bone marrow biopsy and cytogenetic studies were performed for confirmation. Cytogenetic analysis showed presence of complex, three-way (1;9;22)(q12;q34;q11.2) translocation involving chromosomes 1, 9 and 22. The Fluorescencein situhybridization (FISH) studies further confirmed BCR-ABL fusion gene and its atypical pattern was in concordance with aberrations observed in karyotype. The variant translocation we reported herein is unique and rarely reported in literature Discussion:We presented a complex variant case of three-way translocation with characteristic hematological and immunophenotypic findings of CML in chronic phase. To the best of our knowledge, only few cases have been documented so far involving such complex translocation. The initial response to cytoreduction was encouraging while imatinib response has to be followed in present case. Conclusion: It is important to highlight the variant translocations since such findings may influence the disease course hence play a significant role to predict outcome.

ABSTRACT

Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) began in China, in December 2019, and was declared a pandemic by WHO on March 11, 2020. The treatment is evolving and is mostly supportive in nature. Material and methods: This was a single-center retrospective study that included confirmed COVID-19 cases treated at our institute (a tertiary care hospital in Jammu and Kashmir, India), between March 2020 and December 2020. Patients with age more than 18 years were included in the study. Results: On evaluating the effect of various drug therapies used in management of COVID-19 patients of all severity, use of remdesivir and famotidine was associated with significantly higher odds of survival. In subgroup of patients with severe disease, use of systemic steroids was associated with significantly higher odds of survival in addition to remdesivir and famotidine. In patients with severe COVID-19 illness, likelihood of survival was significantly higher in those who received combination of systemic steroids plus remdesivir compared to steroids and remdesivir alone. Conclusion: Steroids were effective in severe COVID-19 illness and the combination of steroids and remdesivir was more effective in severe illness. There is a need to undertake more large scale prospective randomized trials to determine the most effective drug therapies to treat the sick patients and prevent worsening of mild cases.
