ABSTRACT

Shift work is one of the most prevalent stressors in nursing practice. It affects nurses health and the quality of their performance [i.e. causing strain]. Coping attempts of nurses may interact with stress moderating such strain. This study aimed at examining the effect of shift rotation on nurses stress, coping and strain. The sample consisted of 35 staff nurses: 25 nurses were working on rotating shifts and 10 on fixed shifts. Stress, coping and strain were measured for all nurses before and after a 3-month period. Results indicated that both rotating and fixed shifts nurses had similar average amounts of stress during the study period, though it was slightly increased for the rotating group after introduction of the rotation. Although coping scores of the rotating group significantly increased after rotation, their strain scores were also increased. Recommendations included avoiding rapid change of shift work, respecting nurses choice of their work time and enhancing active nurses coping skills by training workshops and using a self help manual on understanding and controlling anxiety
