ABSTRACT

A recognized and reliable methods were used to measure serum calcium, Magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, parathyroid and calcitonin hormones level in forty one patients with different types of bone tumors. Statistical analysis of the data revealed a significant decrease in the serum levels of calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphorus [p<0.01; p< 0.001 and p<0.0 respectively]. Serum parathyroid hormone level was significantly increased [p<0.001], while calcitonin level did not show any significant change. The biochemical changes were only found in malignant bone tumor, since no changes were detected in benign type. All these biochemical abnormalities return to control value after surgical operation and during anticancer therapy in patients with primary malignant bone tumors. While in patients with secondary bone tumors the above biochemical changes were persisted inspite of treatment. These results show that the measurement of the serum levels of the above mentioned biochemical parameters are of a great value for the diagnosis and prognosis of primary bone tumors
