ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationship between Social Distrust (SD) with Personal Suffering (PS). This paper considered Excessive Reassurance Seeking (ERS) as a social method of expressing one’s lack of trust on others. Methods: Analytical technique of linear regression was used to test the relations statistically. A sampling method of convenient and referral selection was applied to select 85 respondents from the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Results: Analysis showed that only ERS predicted PS significantly (B = 0.623, p < 0.001). Age also decreased ERS in the sample (B = -0.208, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Age reduced ERS because elders became more focused on their personal objectives and therefore, they did not feel the need to confirm loyal attachment of others. Additionally, ERS contributes to increase PS as people confirm sincerity of their social circle regularly. Friends and family do not withstand constant scrutiny of their motives and individuals who use ERS intensively experience depressing loneliness in the society. ABSTRACT

Objective: This study intended to investigate the relationship between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) with moderating role of Islamic Work Ethics (IWE). Methods: A sample of 123 students of Islamabad were surveyed on EI, OCB and IWE and data from this survey were entered into a linear regression model to study the links between these variables. Thirty-four (27.6%), 45 (36.6%), 9 (7.3%), 27 (21.9%) and 8 (6.5%) of the respondents were in the age range of 20 - 25, 25 - 30, 30 - 35, 35 and above, respectively. Furthermore, 7 (5.7%), 23 (18.7%), 43 (34.9%), 31 (25.2%) and 19 (15.4%) had qualifications of Graduate, Masters, MS, PhD and Post Doc, respectively. Eighty-two (66.67%) were male and 41 (33.33%) female. Results: There was a statistically significant linear relation between EI and OCB (Beta = 0.292) whereas IWE also had a notable link with OCB (Beta =0.559). IWE had no significant impact on the relationship between EI and OCB. Conclusion: The interaction effect of EI and IWE did not cause the target sample of the study to exhibit OCB to a significant level.

ABSTRACT

This study was done to find out the frequency of anxiety and depression among patients with common rheumatic disorders and determine the possible relationship of different demographic and clinical variables with anxiety and depression. Cross-sectional, analytical study. The study was carried out at Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, during April to August 2006. Patients attending the rheumatology outpatient department, with more than 2 years duration of rheumatic disorder were selected. A proforma regarding the demographic details was filled for all the patients. A physician made the assessment regarding the rheumatological disorder. Urdu version of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS] was used to assess anxiety and depression. Clinical assessment was done by two psychiatrists according to International Classification of Diseases-10 [ICD-10]. Data was analyzed on SPSS10 and p-value was calculated using Chi-square test as test of significance. There were 108 patients mostly females [90%], mean age 44.7 +/- 11 years, majority [72%] were married and 51% were uneducated. Almost 80% of the patients had rheumatoid arthritis. Two-third of the patients had persistent symptoms. According to the HADS, scoring 56% of the patients had more than the cut off score for depression and 65.7% patients had scores falling in the category of cases. Regarding the clinical diagnosis, 42% of the patients were found to be depressed. Considering the factors which might be associated with depression or anxiety; only gender was found to be significantly associated with depression [p=0.03]. Depression and anxiety is high in patients being treated for chronic rheumatological disorders. A close liaison between rheumatologist and mental health professionals could prove beneficial for these patients

ABSTRACT

Aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of Anxiety, Depression and Cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease. One hundred patients between the ages of 40-80: both sexes [male= 88; female=12] suffering from Parkinson's disease were included. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS] was used to detect anxiety and depression while Mini Mental State Examination [MMSE] was used for cognitive deficits in all these patients. Final diagnosis of anxiety and depression was made using ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. Forty eight% of the study sample was found to be either suffering from anxiety, depression or cognitive impairments. Depression was present in 31%, Anxiety in 7% and Cognitive impairments in 10%. This study reveals that a significant number of patients of Parkinson's disease suffer from Anxiety Depression and Cognitive impairments. These manifestations cannot be the out come of chronic disabling disease alone but has a distinctive psychological pattern which needs further investigation with methodologically sound studies

ABSTRACT

Open-heart surgery is associated with prolonged intubation and hypothermia. This prospective study was performed at intensive care unit. 100 adult patients were intubated with BAXTER endotracheal tubes. Body temperature was decreased to 28.5 °C during cardiopulmonary bypass. Patients were electively ventilated for a mean period of 15.2 hours. All patients were extubated successfully. They were followed on first postoperative day for any intubation related complication. 53 out of 100 patients reported one or more complications. Hoarseness was the major problem. Sore throat and dysphagia were other complaints
