ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to compare the effectiveness of pretreatment prednisolone on post-endodontic pain in comparison with placebo. Patients of irreversible pulpitis were arbitrarily divided into two equal groups [group A and group B] each comprising of 45 patients. In group A premedication [prednisolone] was given and in group B placebo was given. Pain level was evaluated on visual analogue scale as no, mild, moderate or severe pain according to score. The overall effectiveness was noted after 24 hours. It was concluded that Pretreatment prednisolone was more effective for prevention of Postendodontic [PEP] pain in comparison to placebo

ABSTRACT

Dentinal hypersensitivity is one of the most common complaint observed in daily clinical practice. Three basic methods used for treatment are nerve desensitization, anti-inflammatory agents and agents covering or plugging dentinal tubules. A more recent approach to the management of dentinal hypersensitivity is tooth mousse, which is a unique combination containing amorphous calcium phosphate [ACP] and casein phosphopeptide [CPP] obtained from milk protein named casein. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Tooth Mousse in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity. One hundred and four teeth with dentin hypersensitivity in 16 patients [10 females and 6 males] aged 25-50 were years selected randomly. Patients complaining of pain due to tooth brushing, hot or cold beverages, sweet and sour food were included in this study whereas patients having carious teeth, cracked teeth, extensively restored teeth [cervical fillings], teeth with pulpitis and teeth in direct contact with any prostheses were excluded from this study. A questionnaire was filled by the patients before tooth mousse application mentioning their complaints [intensity, duration, and analgesics], oral hygienic habits and nutrition habits. Tooth mousse was applied topically to the exposed dentin by patient and after 4 weeks patients were clinically evaluated for the pain response on VAS by application of a thermal, tactile and air stimuli. A significant difference in effectiveness was found between the 4-weeks follow-up and base line levels

ABSTRACT

Microleakage of oral fluids and microbial components is a dynamic factor occurring at the tooth-restoration interface. Different restorative materials show different values of micro-leakage depending upon their composition, setting reaction and nature of physical and/or chemical bonds with the dental tissues. The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of Resin modified Glass lonomer [Fuji II.LC] and Polyacid modified Composite Resins [Dyract]. It was a comparative cross sectional study which was carried out in the Department of Dentistry, Pakistan Institite of Medical Sciences [PIMS] Islamabad. Fifty healthy, unrestored extracted premolar teeth allocated randomly in to two groups. Class V cavities were prepared at the cemento-enamel junction in all fifty teeth, and restored with Fuji II.LC [GC America] and Dyract [Dentsply], 25 teeth in each group. All the teeth were placed in 2% basic fuchsin dye for 24 hrs at37C. Teeth were then embedded in cold cure acrylic resin, resectioned longitudinally in - ISOMETA, and the dye penetration at the enamel and cementum margin were scored at 10 X magnification stereo microscope and distinct leakage patterns were recorded. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 10.0. The resin-modified glass ionomers showed less microleakage than the polyacid modified composite resin especially at gingival margins

ABSTRACT

Oral health related quality of life [OHRQoL] has been considered as an outcome measure to assess consequences of edentulism and available treatment options. The oral health impact profile [OHIP] is one of the most technically sophisticated instruments designed to measure OHRQoL. Objective of the study was to assess the OHRQoL before and after the provision of complete denture. It was a case series study done at the Department of Prosthodontics, de, Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore from 15-07-2006 to 14-07-2007. One hundred edentulous subjects were studied. All subjects completed the OHIP-14 questionnaire before and after provision of complete dentures. The responses were compared on Likert scale. In majority of subjects, pre treatment responses in OHIP-14 questionnaire were at the higher end, indicating the negative impacts on the OHRQoL. The post provision responses showed a significant improvement. The study suggested that provision of complete dentures in subjects having positive attitude towards the removable prostheses had positive impacts on OHRQoL
