ABSTRACT

Objective@#The Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC 12), which assesses behavioral and experienced stigma, has not been translated into Korean. We developed and standardized the Korean version of the DISC 12 (DISC 12-K) in patients with depressive disorders. @*Methods@#The study included 230 patients with depressive disorders who were assessed on the four subscales of the DISC 12-K: Unfair Treatment, Stopping Self, Overcoming Stigma, and Positive Treatment. Additionally, stigma was assessed using the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale, depressive symptoms using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Beck Depression Inventory, level of functioning using the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale, self-esteem using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and quality of life was assessed using the EuroQol-5D. The reliability of DISC 12 was assessed by internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and estimating the intercorrelation of items and corrected item-total correlations; interrater reliability and test–retest reliability were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients at the item and subscale levels; and the concurrent validity of the DISC 12-K relative to the other assessment scales was assessed using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. @*Results@#All of the DISC 12-K subscales had high reliability. The validity was good for the Unfair Treatment and Stopping Self subscales, but only fair for the Overcoming Stigma and Positive Treatment subscales. @*Conclusion@#The Unfair Treatment and Stopping Self subscales of the new DISC 12-K are reliable and valid measures of stigma in patients with depressive disorders. Future studies are needed to test the validity of this scale in other mental disorders.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recently, anti-ganglioside complex (GSC) antibodies were discovered among the various subtypes of Guillain-Barré syndrome. GSC is the novel glycoepitopes formed by two individual ganglioside molecules. CASE REPORT: We present a 36-year-old man with overlap Miller Fisher syndrome and acute bulbar palsy who had anti-GSC antibody that provided diagnostic robustness. CONCLUSION: Anti-GSC testing could be considered important in patients who show atypical manifestation with negative antibody reaction against each constituent ganglioside.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep and mental health in middle school female students. METHODS: For this purpose, We analyzed the data of 15,477 for middle school female students among the 2016 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey by multiple logistic regression based on the complex sample design. RESULTS: Sleep duration of middle school female students in Korea were significantly associated with perceived stress, depressive experience, and suicidal idea, and subjective sleep satisfaction were significantly associated with perceived stress, depressive experience in results of multiple logistic regression. CONCLUSION: Sleep duration and subjective sleep satisfaction have a significant impact on the mental health of middle school female students. Therefore, in-depth research and policies to mental health of middle school female students through sleep duration and subjective sleep satisfaction increase are required.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the performances and limitations of health community building project of 148 village in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul on community health organization perspective. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using both a systematic review of this project and in-depth interviews with the operators who had worked for the project from January 2012 to December 2012. RESULTS: In this project, activists worked by gathering the opinions of the residents and focusing on their growth. The residents themselves established a community health care plan. Based on social determinants of health, they continued projects to solve residents' needs. A variety of programs were activated by providing a health cafe, which was an alternative public participation health promotion space that was not a clinic or a public health center. As the various entities gathered, there were difficulties related to interests and role sharing, and there were limitations such as the fact that the performance and limit of the pilot project could not be clearly predicted beforehand. CONCLUSIONS: This case suggested that new possibility of health and medical movement, approaching health issues by the way of community organization principle. Through the health community building project as community health organization perspective is expanded, health promotion effect will be created in the whole society.

ABSTRACT

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering and erosive mucocutaneous syndrome associated with underlying neoplasm. It is primarily associated with lymphoproliferative disorders, and uncommonly with malignancies of epithelial origin. We report on a case of a 68-year-old male who presented with whole body bullous and erosive skin lesions. Findings on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and skin biopsy revealed esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and paraneoplastic pemphigus. Palliative chemotherapy and systemic glucocorticoid were started, however, the patient died of overwhelming sepsis on the ninth day of chemotherapy. This case demonstrates that paraneoplastic pemphigus can occur in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and could be a cause of morbidity.

ABSTRACT

Ischemic colitis has a relatively high prevalence in the elderly population with underlying vascular disorders such as hypertension and usually occurs on the left side of the colon. However, ischemic colitis also rarely occurs in healthy young adults with no risk factors. Herbal medication use is increasing, particularly for weight loss. Ischemic colitis associated with herbal medication use has been rarely reported. Here, we describe a case of right-sided ischemic colitis in a young woman that was potentially linked to the use of herbal medication. An 18-year-old woman was admitted to our emergency department with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea for 1 day. Her medical history was unremarkable for bowel ischemia risk factors. However, she had taken herbal medication for weight loss for the past 2 weeks. Abdominopelvic CT showed diffuse wall thickening with decreased mucosal enhancement from the ascending to the transverse colon. A colonoscopic biopsy specimen showed coagulative necrosis of the mucosa, hemorrhage, and inflammatory cell infiltration. The abdominopelvic CT, colonoscopy, and biopsy findings were compatible with ischemic colitis. Her abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea improved completely with conservative management, and she was advised to discontinue the use of herbal medications.
