ABSTRACT

The role of transrectal fine needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsy in the diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma was evaluated in 50 patients. Thirty cases had palpable prostatic nodules and twenty had clinical evidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Both methods yielded a specificity rate of 100%. Fine needle aspiration was less traumatic and detected more neoplasms [89.5%] than the core needle method [73.7%]. It was concluded that fine needle aspiration is considered an important diagnostic method in patients with prostatic carcinoma

ABSTRACT

The relationship between the use of non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs and pulmonary diseases is recognized with greater frequency. The present work aimed to study the histological and histochemical effects of pirprofen administration on the lung of albino rats and the changes that occur after its withdrawal as compared to placebo. Bronchopneumonia, bronchiectasis, non caseating tuberculous lesions and emphysematous changes were seen in the animals killed one hour after the last dose of drug administration. Gradual resolution was observed in the withdrawal groups. The histopathological changes were associated with decreased cytochrome oxidase which retained its normal level at three weeks after withdrawal. On the other h and, acid and alkaline phosphatases showed increased activity with progressive decrease to normal levels after three weeks withdrawal. The above mentioned changes were probably caused by a reversible hypersensitivity reaction to the non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drug, pirprofen. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of such a complication in patients receiving this drug

ABSTRACT

The urinary bladder of 30 patients with histologically proven carcinoma of the urinary bladder was studied by scanning electron microscopy [SEM]. Specimens were taken from the tumor as well as from the normal looking mucosa. The SEM characteristics of the various types of bladder cancer have been verified. In addition, the apparently normal mucosa showed precancerous surface changes that were not always evident by light microscopic examination. These findings lend a further support to concept of multicentricity of bladder cancer. This concept should be taken in consideration in planning the management of patients with carcinoma of the urinary bladder, partial cystectomy is not a suitable operation for such patients

ABSTRACT

The liver is considered a mass of relatively homogenous parenchymal cells rich in enzymes. Hence, an ultrastructural and histochemical study on the effect of the carcinogen diethyl nitrosamine on the rat liver was performed. A total of 50 male white albino rats was performed. A total of 50 male white albino rats were fed on basic diet consisting of bread, milk, lettuce, carrots, crushed grains and maize. A dose of 10 mg/kg body weight of diethyl nitrosamine was intermingled with the food of the first group. The second group received a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight and the third group was kept on the basic diet. Early disturbance of the normal lobular architecture, sinusoidal dilatation and degenerative changes were seen. The late changes were in the form of nuclear atypia up to the frank formation of malignancy, associated with progressive increase in acid phosphatase and decrease in succinic dehydrogenase as well as decrease in glycogen content. Electron microscopic changes in the form of alterations of the mitochondrial shape, increased number of lysosomes and polyribosomes were observed. Fragmented dispersed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum was also seen

ABSTRACT

Histopathological examination remains the only sure method of diagnosing prostatic lesions. The present study was conducted to evaluate accuracy of cytological diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma as compared to the routine histopathological examination. This study included 35 prostatic carcinoma and 10 benign prostatic hyperplasia. Two cytologic techniques were employed, viz. fine needle aspiration and tissue imprint of the same fresh trans-urethral resection specimens. The cytological yield of both cytological techniques was equally high. No false positive results were obtained, giving 100% specificity. The cytological accuracy of diagnosing malignancy was high, reaching 94.3% sensitivity. Cytological grading of prostatic carcinoma corresponded to the histological grading in 84.8% of cases. It may be concluded that both cytologic techniques proved to be easy and have a high degree of specificity and sensitivity
