ABSTRACT

Brenner tumors of ovary are relatively uncommon neoplasms and constitute about 1.4-2.5% of all tumors of ovary. Most of these tumors present as an incidental finding either on gross examination of ovary or as a microscopic finding. They are classified in surface epithelial tumors of ovary. We report here a case of a 50 year old woman who presented to the gynecology and obstetrics department of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center, Karachi, Pakistan. The presenting complaints were irregular and heavy per vaginal bleeding for a few months. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed and the specimen was received at the department of Pathology, Basic Medical Sciences Institute [BMSI], JPMC,Karachi. The microscopic examination of left ovary revealed benign Brenner tumor composed of well demarcated nests of uniform transitional cells

ABSTRACT

To determine the histopathological pattern of endometrial curetting in cases of abnormal uterine bleeding in our setup. Descriptive study. Department of Pathology Peoples Medical College Nawabshah. January 1999 to December 2008. Endometrial curettage of 1209 cases presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding ranging from age groups 20 to over 60 years were studied. The patients were subdivided in to groups according to age and pattern of bleeding. The histopathological diagnosis was made and results were tabulated. 502 [41 .5%]presented with menorrhagia, [32%] with inter menstrual bleeding, 121 [10%] patients with polymenorrhoea and 61 [5.1%] with post menopausal bleeding. The various histological diagnoses included proliferative phase, cystic hyperplasia, adenomatous hyperplasia, endometritis, polyps and endometrial carcinoma. Diagnostic curettage provides help in definite diagnosis and proper treatment and is of importance in postmenopausal bleeding. Endometrial hyperplasia is the commonest lesion in patients with dysfunctional uterine bleeding

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: An ELISA test based on mycobacterial antigen A60 for the estimation of Anti [A60] IgG in the serum has been used successfully for the rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis in studies done in the European countries, China and India. To demonstrate and evaluate anti-tuberculosis anti-body IgG for rapid diagnosis of both pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis, this study was carried out in our set up

Methods: ELISA assay based on mycobacterial antigen A60 [Anda Biologicals, France] was used to the sera obtained from 69 cases of tuberculosis and 136 controls in the population of Karachi, Sindh -Pakistan

Results: Of 136 controls, only 17.7% were positive for IgG antibodies and showing 82.3% specificity. A very high sensitivity [88.8%] was seen in sputum positive active pulmonary tuberculosis. Relatively low [75%] sero-positivity was seen in cases of sputum negative active pulmonary tuberculosis compared to those of sputum positive active pulmonary tuberculosis. In cases of extra pulmonary tuberculosis, 47.3% sensitivity was observed. In case of healed tuberculosis quite a large number of cases was found positive for IgG [62.5%]

Conclusion: The estimation value of anti tuberculosis antibody IgG against A60 for the rapid diagnosis is proved from our data. Considering all the cases of active tuberculosis and the controls the global sensitivity of 69.8% and specificity of 82.4% were obtained when IgG antibodies estimation were taken into account

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to determine the levels of serum LH and Testosterone along with their ratios, among men with varying sperm quality. Two hundred fifty married men, presenting with a complaint of infertility, which had been evaluated for their seminal profile. LH indicated inverse/negative correlation to sperm concentration, while decreased testosterone levels were associated with depleted sperm conc. The mean levels of LH [mlU/ml] and testosterone [nmol/L] for the groups were 13.85 +/- 2.33 and 11.86 +/- 0.70 [azoospermia], 10.92 +/- 3.79 and 11.88 +/- 1.06 [oligozoospermia], 3.92 +/- 1.17 and 16.24 +/- 2.05 [asthenozoospermia], while the levels in normozoospermic men were 7.24 +/- 1.02 and 17.29 +/- 1.02, respect. Similarly, the LH/T and T/LH ratios were 1.17[ +/- 0.28] and 0.86[ +/- 2.70] respectively in azoospermia, 0.92 [ +/- 0.28] and 1.08[ +/- 0.17] in oligozoospermia, 0.30[ +/- 0.10] and 4.14[ +/- 10.4] in asthenozoospermia 0.42 [ +/- 0.08] and 2.34[ +/- 0.48] in normozoospermic men. The present data indicate that disturbance in LH and testosterone ratios also causes infertility, since these hormones act together by maintaining a feedback control system
