ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In Brazil, the estimated number of new cancer cases between 2020 and 2022 is 625 thousand, and the most prevalent carcinomas are primarily skin (non-melanoma), followed by those of the breast, prostate, colon, and rectum. Although breast carcinoma still has a high mortality rate, it has a good prognosis due to the increase in early diagnosis and the evolution of anticancer treatments. The proposed treatment can be isolated or associated with resective surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and/or hormone replacement. Chemotherapy generates extensive immunosuppression and affects both healthy and altered cells, and the cytotoxicity of the treatment is an important effect that can cause lesions on the oral mucosa. Severity is related to the type of chemotherapeutic agent, treatment time, the dose used, and the individual's age. Additionally, chemotherapy treatment can exacerbate preexisting conditions in the individual and cause greater discomfort during treatment. Therefore, monitoring oral health before, during, and after anticancer therapy is essential. The objective of this work is to report a clinical case of dental emergency in a patient after the first cycle of doxorubicin- cyclophosphamide-paclitaxel (ACTdd) to treat breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases have a high incidence and due to that there is a large amount of patients who take medications for prevention and treatment of these disorders. Consequently, the number of people to be submitted to dental treatment and also under oral anticoagulant therapy is increasing and the management of these individuals requires a careful evaluation of the clinical condition and the procedure to be performed. Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge of dentists and undergraduate dental students in the management of individuals using oral anticoagulants to be submitted to dental treatment. Material and method: Descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional study based on a questionnaire answered by 100 individuals (70 dentists and 30 undergraduate dental students), chosen for convenience to evaluate their knowledge about the proposed topic. To compare the quantitative variables, the Student's T test was used to compare two samples and the ANOVA test with Bonferroni's post test to compare three samples. Result: Among the interviewees, 74.5% of dental surgeons and 54.2% of undergraduates reported having attended a patient under oral anticoagulant therapy. There was no statistical difference regarding the performance between professionals and students in the dental management of patients taking anticoagulants. Among the group of dental surgeons, the professionals of the bucomaxillofacial surgery and those who had multiprofessional residency presented better performance when compared to the general practitioners. Conclusion: The management of patients using oral anticoagulants stills a challenge for the groups studied.

ABSTRACT

The nonsyndromic orofacial cleft is the fourth most common birth defect, but in Brazil, data about the cleft epidemiology are not accurate. Objective: This study aimed to describe the epidemiologic characteristics of oral cleft cases at Specialized Society Attending Cleft Patient in Sergipe State. Methods  Data were obtained from patients' medical records in relation to the following characteristics: age; gender; race; origin; cleft type; additional malformations and/or complications; prenatal accomplishment; treatment applied. For diagnosis analysis, it was noted if mothers had received prenatal care and if they had ultrasonography performed and if the cleft was viewed in it. Results: We observed a prevalence of male gender (54%). Age between 0 and 4 years old was most prevalent (53%), and pheoderma race was observed in 47%. Transincisive foramen cleft was found in 52.3% of the individuals. The prevalence of pre- and transincisive foramen cleft was higher in men (66.3 and 55.7%), women accounted for 65.0% of postincisive foramen, and atypical facial cleft (0.3%) occurred in one case. Associated malformations and complications were present in 12% of patients. Prenatal care was reported by 48% of the mothers. Conclusion: In this study male gender was the most affected, and 0 to 4 years was the most frequent age group. Transincisive foramen cleft type was most frequently encountered. Prenatal care was reported by most mothers. So, this study found that early treatment is a reality in SEAFESE (Service Specializing in Cleft Care of Sergipe), and consequently the chances of successful integration of the child to society will be better...

ABSTRACT

The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autograft composite that provides a high concentration of platelets in a minimal plasma volume. The introduction of the PRP in the tissues recovery is based on the acceleration of wound healing by the factors present in platelets growth . Thus, this review aims to explain about the use of the PRP, the factors growth and thei r clinical applications for dentistry. After this study, it was observed that the application of PRP in the dental clinic has brought promising results; however, more studies are needed to confirm the PRP effectiveness over the years.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: the purpose is to evaluate, through the chewing sequence of an Optosil artificial "tablet", the masticatory performance in nasal breathing and mouth breathing. METHOD: we attended sixty dentate subjects aged 14-22 year old. An Optosil "tablet" was supplied to each participant, who executed 20 masticatory cycles, the Optosil fragments had been placed in a column with seven bolters, and the retained particles were weighed on a precision analytical balance and the masticatory efficiency value was calculated. The gotten data were submitted to the descriptive analysis and inferential analysis (test T and ANOVA). RESULTS: the nasal breathing and mouth breathing groups were composed by 30 young people each, with a mean age of 17.87 and 17.83 year old, respectively. Regarding gender, the females predominated in the mouth breathing group and the males in the nasal breathing group. The five most prevalent diagnoses in the mouth breathing group were adenoid hypertrophy, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, asthma and tonsillar hypertrophy. Finally, when we carried out the t test, there was no statistical difference in masticatory performance in mouth breathing and nasal breathing (p> 0.05). CONCLUSION: it was concluded that the breathing pattern was not a determining factor in the masticatory efficiency.
